Zenit v Celtic Prediction & Betting Tips – 22nd February 201819th February 2018 / lee
Zenit v Celtic UEFA Europa League, 22nd February 7.45pm
Celtic hold a narrow 1-0 advantage in this tie against their Russian opponents, but will they be able to hold onto it away from home? Celtic were wasteful with opportunities at home in the first leg which may come back to haunt them. Zenit are a strong side at home and will still fancy their chances of turning this tie around against the Scottish Champions. There’s plenty of life left in this one still.
Zenit v Celtic Betting Odds*
Zenit 7/4, Draw 14/5, Celtic 5/1* (Betting Odds taken on February 16th, 2018 at 6:24 p.m.)
Zenit News and Form
Zenit suffered a loss in the first leg at Celtic Park and looked pretty sloppy along the way too, which could be explained by them just coming back from a two-month winter break. But the damage is only a 1-0 deficit and the tie is still wide open back on home soil on Thursday night. They are defending a proud record of never having lost at home in the UEFA Europa League at any stage of the competition. They hold a W16 D1 record from their seventeen previous home games in the tournament and have won eleven of their last thirteen home games in Europe overall. So they are a formidable home side. They won all three home games in the group stage but did concede in each of those and both teams to score at William Hill could be worth a flutter at 7/10 odds* (Betting Odds taken on February 18th, 2018 at 5:36 p.m.). There’s no reason to panic really for them. Prior to this season’s meeting with Celtic, Zenit’s only previous clash with a Scottish side came against Rangers in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup final in Manchester which they won 2-0. The Russians are looking to make it through to the round of sixteen for the fourth time. Their most recent trip here was against Anderlecht in last season’s competition they were eliminated after a 3-3 aggregate draw. They have lost the away first leg in UEFA competitions 15 times, recovering themselves on five of those occasions to edge through. When they have lost the first leg on the road by a 1-0 scoreline, they have gone through two times out of three.
Celtic News and Form
Will Celtic end up rueing not having been more ruthless last week in the first leg? Celtic hold a W4 D2 L1 record now against Russia sides and out in Russia they have never lost, with a W2 D1 record there, winning their last two there back to back. However, Celtic are actually looking for their first ever away victory in the UEFA Europa League (D8 L5) and they have won just one of their last 19 matches away in Europe outside of qualifying matches. So it’s not particularly good for them. They are taking on a side who are playing outside of their domestic season though so the Bhoys should be the fitter and sharper of the two. This is actually Zenit’s first home game since December 2nd. In the correct score market at William Hill the shortest priced option is a Zenit 1-0 at 11/2 with a 2-1 victor for the home side coming in at 15/2* (Betting Odds taken on February 18th, 2018 at 5:36 p.m.). Celtic have triumphed in 32 of the 45 UEFA competition ties in which they won the home first leg. After winning a first leg home match in a tie, Celtic have gone on to win seven and lose five of such ties. It is a good foothold that the Scottish Champions have in the tie but against Zenit’s impressive home form, Celtic still have plenty of work to do in order to progress.
Zenit v Celtic Head to Head
This tie has been the first meetings between the two sides in European competition.
Who will win – Zenit v Celtic Predictions
Zenit can probably be trusted enough to get a win on the board in this one. They are a good home side in Europe as was seen in the group stage and Celtic are going to have a tough time defending their narrow lead. Back a home win to blow this tie wide open as the Russians can turn this around.
