Uruguay World Cup 2018 Predictions – Group Stage & Winner Odds

27th March 2018 / lee
World Cup 2018 Betting

With one of the most potent attacks arriving at the 2018 World Cup, Uruguay are going to be difficult opponents for anyone to go up against. They will be kicking off in the tournament as favourites to win their group ahead of host nation Russia. What kind of impact will the South Americans have in Russia?

Uruguay Nickname: La Celeste
Head Coach: Óscar Tabárez
FIFA World Ranking: 22nd

Qualification Campaign

Uruguay were comfortable through qualification in the CONMEBOL Zone. They finished second behind runaway winners Brazil, ten points back of the Selecao. Uruguay were strong on home soil, with only Brazil getting the better of them on home soil. They did struggle a bit on their travels winning only two of their away fixtures but they did dig out away draws at Brazil and Colombia so they deserve some credit for that.

Brazil were the only ones to score heavier than the Uruguayans did during qualification, with La Celeste getting 32 goals in their 18 fixtures, ending with a +12 goal difference. That is a pretty good return in a really tough qualification zone and Edinson Cavani finished as the top scorer in the qualification zone with Luis Suarez firing in five of his own. So they will pose a big threat at the World Cup. They collected eight clean sheets in their qualification matches.

They will roll up and be a tough side to get the better off and they never really looked in trouble at any point through qualification. That is actually their best qualification result from the zone since the CONMEBOL moved up to a ten-match zone ahead of the World Cup 2002 qualifiers.

Stage of Elimination

Uruguay should be able to make it through the first stage of the competition. They go in Group A against Russia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt and given the strengths of Uruguay there are manageable games ahead of them. They get to take on Egypt in their opener on June 15th and you would have to back them to get through that. Uruguay are 13/20 odds with Bet365* (betting odds taken on March 22nd, 2018 at 9:16 p.m.) to win that first match which should set them up well for the campaign.

Uruguay will then face off against Saudi Arabia in their second match and that means they have a chance to pretty much wrap up qualification with a victory over the tournament’s rank outsiders. Even going into their final match against Russia it will be hard not to throw weight behind the challenge of the South Americans and at the end of the day, a seven-point haul for La Celeste looks a pretty reasonable and attainable target for them.

In the stage of elimination market at bet365 the shortest priced option available there is 11/8* (betting odds taken on March 22nd, 2018 at 9:16 p.m.) on them going home at the round of sixteen and that looks to be a reasonable option on the market because what awaits for them in the round of sixteen is tough opposition. Regardless of whether they come first or second in their group, they will face either Spain or Portugal in the first knockout round and that is what is going to hinder their progress.

Uruguay World Cup 2018 Fixtures & Odds*

June 20th: Uruguay 2/7, Draw 4/1, Saudi Arabia

Past World Cup Performances

Uruguay can boast a tremendous record at the World Cup. They won in 1930 and in 1950 their first two appearances in the World Cup. That was some start to their life on the world stage and considering that they are also the smallest country ever to win any World Cup medals it is some feat. Actually there are only six FIFA member nations with a currently smaller population than Uruguay’s have ever qualified to any World Cup

They have not been as far as that since their second title, but they have finished fourth on three other occasions. Four years ago they managed to get past the first round but they were knocked out by fellow South Americans Colombia. In the group stage they opened with a shock 3-1 loss against Costa Rica but recovered well to beat England and Italy to put themselves through in second place behind Costa Rica.

Overall Uruguay’s World Cup record is at W20 D12 L19.

Uruguay World Cup Predictions

There should be little trouble for Uruguay in getting through their group stage campaign and they are 11/10 at bet365 odds* (betting odds taken on March 22nd, 2018 at 9:16 p.m.) to win Group A. They have the scoring power to ease their way through the group and make it to the knockout stage. The problems for Uruguay is the route in the knockout stage. It is very difficult ahead for them.

Not only would they get either Portugal or Spain in the round of sixteen most likely, if they win their group they would probably be meeting France in the quarter finals. If they were to finish runners up then the most likely situation is that they would be running into Argentina in the quarter finals. It’s that extra difficult game in the round of sixteen that will make punters just a little hesitant about backing them.
