Senegal were second-placed finishers in the group stage to Algeria. Their only loss in the group happened against the Algerians in the battle for top spot. That put them through to a round of sixteen tie against Uganda. They dug out a narrow 1-0 success thanks to one of their star players, Sadio Mane coming up with the only goal of the game. Then it was their fixture against Benin when another of their players from the English Premier League, Everton’s Idrissa Gueye delivered the only goal of the game.
So that is back to back 1-0 wins for them in the competition now. So while it has been fine margins for them, they have been digging out their rewards. Having those extra touches of quality makes a huge difference. Liverpool’s Sadio Mane is their top scorer with three goals in the tournament. It has been some fine form that the Lions of Teranga have put together since October last year. They have won 10 of their last 11 games now. During that extended streak of form, they have picked up a whopping nine clean sheets. It has been just one conceded in their five tournament fixtures.
The last meeting was at Afcon 2017 when Senegal won 2-0
Both teams have scored in one of the last seven meetings
Just one of the last seven meetings have gone over 2.5 goals
Senegal have won only one of the last eleven against Tunisia
The Eagles of Carthage had a much more comfortable time of things in their quarter-final tie. They were up against minnows Madagascar, who were the big underdog story of the entire competition. Tunisia romped to a 3-0 win. That was actually their first win of the tournament. They had drawn all three of their group stages games. Then in their round of sixteen tie, they had played out a 1-1 draw with Ghana after Tunisia had conceded in the 92nd minute of the fixture. The Tunisians collected the penalty shoot out win 5-4.
Tunisia are now currently on an eight-match undefeated streak of form (W4 D4). During that spell, they have taken the three clean sheets only, but two of those have come inside their last three games. This is the first time that they have been past the quarter-finals since their successful 2004 campaign. Their top scorer in this tournament with two goals is Youssef Msakni. It has been a strange campaign from them given the amount of draws that they have put up. Will that big quarter-final get them to a better place?
Senegal have some game-changers in their ranks. None better than Sadio Mane and in what is expected to be a tight and tense game that is likely to make a big difference. It will probably be low scoring but Senegal to win by a one-goal margin looks a pretty decent fit.

Few would have seen this run from Madagascar coming. They have lit the tournament up by reaching the quarter-finals. Not bad for a nation in their first-ever AFCON campaign and one that was ranked 107th in the world at the start of the event. They pulled off a shock group win too. They posted a W2 D1 record in their three games in the group stage, coming up big in their final match, a decider for top sport against Nigeria. That was following the draw against Guinea and then a 1-0 win over Burundi.
That was fantastic from them and it gave them a round of sixteen tie against DR Congo. That was a favourable draw for them as the DR Congo had only qualified as one of the best third-placed teams from the group stage. The game ended in a 2-2 draw but Madagascar impressively held their never to win the penalty shootout 4-2. The top scorer for the Barea is Carolus Andriamatsinoro with two. Madagascar are actually only W2 D3 L4 in their last nine games, which is why this run has been so unexpected.
The only previous meeting were in the World Cup 2002 qualifiers
Tunisia won both of those games to nil
It has been a strange tournament from Tunisia, who once again drew a game. They were up against Ghana in the round of sixteen and they looked to be heading to a win. That was until they conceded to the Black Stars in the 92nd minute. So they had to endure a penalty shoot-out in the end, which Tunisia took 5-4. Back in the group stage, Tunisia took a second-place finish behind winner Mali, and the Tunisians drew all three of their games, two of the 1-1 draws. So three of their four games at the tournament have been 1-1 draws (90 minutes).
So the 2004 champions have been grinding. They have actually only suffered three defeats since the end of the World Cup last summer. They are W7 D4 L3 in their last fourteen fixtures played. They are currently on a seven-match undefeated streak of form, drawing each of the last four as mentioned. This failure to have won games is going to likely bother punters as to whether or not they can actually find their winning touch when it matters the most. So far it has not quite been there, and there could be nervy moments in this one for them.
Madagascar are not going to be quaking in their boots at the prospect of facing Tunisia. The Tunisians are the favourites though but they can’t seem to get that winning touch nailed. So it may just be worth having the Madagascar – Draw Double Chance in mind.

Ghana were group winners in the first stage of action at the Africa Cup of Nation 2019. That was after a fight battle with Cameroon. It puts them through to the round of sixteen when they face up to Tunisia. The Tunisians got through the group stage in second place in their group without winning a game. Ghana were thwarted in their opening group stage game by Benin, the fixture playing out to a 2-2 draw. After a 0-0 draw against Cameroon in the group’s feature match, it left Ghana with a bit of work to do to get to the top spot in the final round of matches. With Cameroon failing to beat Benin in their final game, Ghana delivered a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau to top the table in the head to head over the Cameroonians. Jordan Ayew is their top scorer at the tournament with two goals in three games.
The Black Stars might have hoped for a slightly easier round of sixteen tie though. Their record in recent Africa Cup of Nations tournaments has been good. They have finished in the top four in each of the last six editions now, but none of those campaigns yielded a title. They are four-time winners of the tournament, but their last success was all the way back in 1982. Ghana have suffered just one defeat in their last eight games, winning four of those. They have been tight at the back with three clean sheets in their last four games played now.
Ghana took a 4-2 win over Tunisia in 2013, their most recent meeting
It is a W5 D2 L1 record that Ghana have over Tunisia
Tunisia are winless in three against the Black Stars
Both teams have scored in five of the previous eight meetings
Tunisia will have been expecting a bit of a higher return than what they managed in the group stage. They played out three straight drawn matches. Their first two against Angola and Mali were 1-1 draws, while they could only close out with a really disappointing 0-0 draw against Mauritania. So it hasn’t been wonderful stuff from the Eagles of Carthage at all. They have been to the quarterfinals in three of their last four Africa Cup of Nations appearances though.
Their current form suggests that they are going to be in this tie. They are undefeated in their last six games losing just one of their last eight. Since the beginning of September last year, Tunisia are W7 D3 L3 but only one of those three defeats were in competitive fixtures. Tunisia’s 0-0 draw against Mauritania saw them take their first clean sheet in five. It also saw them have a five-match scoring streak snapped.
A lot of the round of sixteen ties in the Cup of Nations look as if they will be tight. This is no exception. Tunisia are hard to beat but they do look as if they have a little less to offer in attacking out than the Black Stars. Ghana to win.
