This game is the biggest fixture of the League One action on the weekend. It features two of the teams who failed in the division’s playoffs at the end of the last campaign. They actually met five times last season with the Black Cats having the better of those clashes. Sunderland are looking for their first win of this campaign. It has been back to back drawn games by Sunderland in League One this season. They opened at home with a 1-1 draw against Oxford before playing out the same scoreline at Ipswich last weekend. So it has not been the most convincing of stars from the Black Cats. They were fifth-place finishers in the league last season picking up a W12 D10 L1 record on home soil. Sunderland struggled a bit towards the end of the season.
There was just the one win in their last seven league games last season (D3 L3) so add on the two missed chances from this campaign and that is one win in nine league games. On home soil, last season all but three of Sunderland’s home successes were against teams who finished in the bottom half of the table. Eight of their ten home draws were by a 1-1 scoreline, which has again been prominent for them this season. Sunderland took a clean sheet in a quarter of home games last season.
The Black Cats beat Pompey in last season’s League One Play-Offs
Four of the last six meetings have gone under 2.5 goals
Portsmouth are winless in three trips to the Stadium of Light
Five of the last eight meetings in all competitions have been drawn
Pompey finished one place above the Black Cats last season in the standings but then lost 1-0 on aggregate to them in the playoff semi-finals. Their record away from home was pretty strong at W13 D6 L4. That is one more win than what they managed at home actually. Pompey went undefeated in their final five away games of the campaign, winning four of those. This season they have gotten themselves up and running with a win.
Portsmouth lost on the opening weekend of the new season, suffering a 1-0 loss at Shrewsbury. But then they set the record straight last weekend with a 2-0 success over Tranmere. That away defeat at the Shrews will probably be hanging heavily on their minds as they go into one of their toughest away games of the season. Portsmouth are the 4/1 outright favourites to earn promotion from League One this season, one mark ahead of Sunderland* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 15th, 2019 at 8:15 p.m.).
There is probably going to be another tight duel between the two of these. They look two of the strongest sides in the division and that’s why this match gets top billing. The draw in the match outright really doesn’t look that unreasonable of an option.

Sunderland are outright favourites to win League One this season. They almost earned their place back in the Championship for this season but lost the League One play off final back in May. They kick-off this campaign off at the Stadium of Light where they welcome Oxford. The U’s were mid-table finishers in the division last season. Read our Sunderland v Oxford betting tips for more.

It was a fifth-place finish that the Mackems took in the division last season. They let a lot of points slip in home drawn games. Their record on home soil was W12 D10 L1 for the season. They looked to be heading to an unbeaten season at the Stadium of Light before Coventry beat them there in mid-April 5-4. The Sky Blues were the only visitors to win there last season. Sunderland managed just one win in their last seven games last season so they did tail off.
After beating Portsmouth in the playoff semi-final, they lost the final against Charlton. The Black Cats scored in every home game played last season in the division at an average of two per game. 74% of their home games saw both teams score. Sunderland managed to score 59% of their home goals in the first half of matches. Manager Jack Ross has seen his side go W1 D1 L2 in their pre-season friendly matches.
There were two 1-1 draws between these two last season
Each of the last three meetings have been drawn
Sunderland are unbeaten in three home games against Oxford
Sunderland are W16 D8 L7 against Oxford overall
The U’s only won four times on their travels last season in League One, part of an overall W4 D11 L8 record that they managed. They ended up in mid-table but they got things together really well down the back stretch of the season. They won eight of their final thirteen games last term, including three of their last four on the road. So they did stabilize themselves pretty well. In total Oxford averaged 1.04 goals per away game last season, but conceded at an average rate of 1.6 per game.
In total, they claimed a clean sheet in 30% of their away games. Three of their four away wins were by one goal margin, while six of their eight away defeats happened by a margin of at least two goals. The U’s scored 71% of their away goals in the second half of fixtures and opened the scoring just six times. Oxford had a really busy pre-season playing nine games, winning just three.
Sunderland were a major force on home soil last season and they should be able to get their new season up and running positively. Oxford have some major improvements to do to their away form from last season. The Black Cats just have more resources to throw at this and they are the favourites in the division for the title. A home win to nil appeals.

Pompey have some work to do to get themselves back into this tie. They trail 1-0 from their trip to the Stadium of Light in the first leg of this semi-final. This was always going to be a tight scrap between two very good teams. Can Portsmouth mount a response back at home? They may get a chance to, with the Black Cats having struggled for away results at the end of the regular season. Read our Portsmouth v Sunderland betting tips for more.
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 12th, 2019 at 3:28 p.m.)
Pompey produced a W12 D7 L4 record at home across the course of the regular season. They are going to need to call on all of their home strengths of theirs. They were doing great at Fratton Park at the end of the regular season. They were on a four-match winning streak (seven undefeated) before a 2-3 reverse there against Peterborough in their final home game of the term. They closed out the season by scoring at least two goals in each of their last five home fixtures. In total, they averaged 1.8 goals per home game this season in their League One campaign. They conceded under a goal per game.
So this is still likely to be a tight game. Pompey took a clean sheet in 30% of their home games, which was a great effort. They did fail to get one in any of their final four at Fratton Park through this season. In total, home and away Portsmouth did not get a clean sheet in any of their last seven games. Pompey though scored in each of their final dozen games of the campaign. Of the twelve home wins that they recorded this season, eight of them were by a one-goal margin. Pompey scored 71% of their home goals for the season in the second period of fixtures, scoring the opening goal in 12 of their 23 home fixtures.
The Black Cats shook off a little slump in end of season form to give themselves an advantage in this tie. They failed to win any of their final four regular season games, taking the two points only in that sequence. Sunderland took just one win in their final seven games of the campaign. The Black Cats posted a W10 D9 L4 away record for the season in the division and interestingly they did struggle for away wins at teams in the top half of the table. Sunderland posted a W2 D6 L3 record this season in such matches.
The Black Cats took one point from their final three away games of the season and they failed to take a clean sheet in any of their last four on the road. They do have a positive of having scored in each of their last eleven games now, including the first leg of this semi-final. Of the four away defeats that Sunderland suffered this season, three of them were by a one-goal margin. They closed out their away campaign with back to back 2-1 defeats at Fleetwood and Southend. Of the goals which they shipped on their travels, 68% of them happened after the halftime break in game. Sunderland scored 65% of their away goals in the second half of games. They did open the scoring 14 road games for the season.
Given the pressure of the situation, this is likely going to be another tight scrap between the two teams. There is enough in Portsmouth’s form at home to hint that they will be working their way back into this tie. Portsmouth to win by a one-goal margin.

Sunderland have the chance at getting themselves back up to the second tier, but the fallen giant struggled for form down the back stretch of the season. * (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 5th, 2019 at 4:56 p.m.)
So this will be an interesting clash as neither were particularly in great form at the end of the season. After such a strong and powerful campaign for pretty much its entirety, Sunderland ran out of steam about midway through April. They posted just one victory in their last seven games of the season, losing three of those. They closed out the season with back-to-back 2-1 away defeats at Fleetwood and Southend. The home record of Sunderland was highly impressive during the regular season as the Black Cats produced a W12 D10 L1 home record. They remained undefeated all the way through to their third-from-last home fixture of the season when they were toppled by Coventry in a thrilling 5-4 defeat.
Sunderland did manage to score in each and every home game played and they closed out the season on a 10 match scoring streak, home and away combined. So that is a big strength of theirs and they averaged exactly 2 goals per home game across the course of the season. But it is interesting to see that during the regular season Sunderland only claimed three victories in their 11 games against the final top 12 (D7 L1). Sunderland conceded just over a goal per game at home across the course of the season. Of the goals which they did concede home, 64% of them were conceded in the first-half of fixtures. Seven of their 12 wins at the Stadium of Light were by a margin of at least two goals during the regular season. Sunderland opened the scoring in 12 of their 23 home fixtures. Sunderland finished the regular season with the joint third highest tally of goals and the fourth best defensive record in League One.
Three of the last four league meetings have ended in a draw
There have been back to back 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light
Both teams have scored in each of the last eight meetings
Sunderland are winless in three at home against Pompey
Portsmouth had some powerful form during their run in. From the start of March, they produced eight wins in their final 12 fixtures of the season (D2 L2). That was some finish from them and at one point they put together a seven-match winning streak, scoring a least two goals in each of those seven victories. Overall during the regular season, Portsmouth produced an away record of W13 D6 L4. However their away record against the other top six finishers at the end of the season was just a winless D3 L2 return. So Pompey did struggle their away games against the better sides in the division which makes this fascinating. Out on their travels during the regular season, Portsmouth averaged 1.8 goals per away game and 61% of all of their road fixtures went over 2.5 goals.
Because of a lack of clean sheets across the course of the season, that played a part in some high-scoring away fixtures for Portsmouth. Pompey claimed a clean sheet in just 17% of away games and both teams scored in 78% of their away fixtures. Portsmouth scored in each of their last 11 away games of the season but they claimed just the one clean sheet in their last 14 games out on the road. Home and away combined Pompey have no clean sheet in their last seven games. Of their 13 away wins posted during the regular season, 10 of them were by a one-goal margin. Portsmouth are leading at the halftime break in 12 of their 23 away fixtures. They conceded 66% of their away goals in the second period of games
There should be a really evenly matched contest over the two legs between these two. The home record from Sunderland across the course of the season cannot be ignored at all, but Portsmouth have the scoring power to trouble them. The draw in this first leg has the most appeal in the match outright.

Fleetwood are set for a mid-table finish this season but they have failed to win any of their last five games played. They have a tough one coming up in midweek as they play host to Sunderland. The chance at automatic promotion looks to have gone for Sunderland this season unless they can win their last two games and overturn a seven-goal deficit in the goal difference to second-placed Barnsley. Read our Fleetwood v Sunderland betting tips for more.
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on April 28th, 2019 at 7:12 p.m.)
Fleetwood are on a five-match winless streak of form at the moment in the division. They are D3 L2 in those five games and each of the drawn matches in that sequence were on home soil. Fleetwood are actually undefeated in their last five home fixtures in the league, winning one and drawing four. That is part of an overall home record that they have taken this season of W8 D9 L5. In their three home games played this season against top four sides, Fleetwood have lost all of them conceding a least two goals in each. While they are unbeaten in five home games, they have taken just one home win in their last six.
In total Fleetwood have earned a clean sheet in a third of their home games this season and they have averaged 1.4 goals per home fixture. Of the eight home victories which they have picked up this season, five of them have been by a one-goal margin. Fleetwood have been level at the break in 11 of their home games so far this term and of the goals which they have conceded, 73% of them have been in the second period of fixtures. They are set for a mid-table finish and if they were to collect three points in this one it would only move them up one place into 11th place.
This will be Fleetwood’s first ever home game against Sunderland
The meeting at the Stadium of Light earlier this season ended in a 1-1 draw
That was first-ever competitive game between the two clubs
Sunderland and then only have outside shot at earning automatic promotion this season. They are six points behind second-placed Barnsley but are worse off in the goal difference to them by seven. Not only that but they have Portsmouth in third place for two points ahead of them still with two games to play. So all Sunderland can do is try and post a couple of big wins and hope for the best. They have had a very good season of things away from home as they are W 0 D9 L2 out on the road in League One this season. The Black Cats are undefeated in their last 10 away fixtures. Home and away combined they are on an eight-match scoring streak in the division.
Sunderland have averaged 1.5 goals per away game this season but only 38% of their road games have gone over 2.5 goals. A large reason for that is because the Black Cats have been very good in defence as they have conceded at under a goal per game on their travels. In total, they have taken a clean sheet in a third of their road games. Of the 10 wins, they have recorded away from home half of them have been by a margin of at least two goals. Sunderland have scored two-thirds of their away goals in the second period of fixtures, but they have also conceded two-thirds of their away goals after the half-time break. Portsmouth are the only side in the division to hold a better away record than Sunderland this season in League One.
This matters for Sunderland a lot more than it does for Fleetwood and that should push things towards the away win. It’s worth backing both teams to score in the game though because Sunderland have been struggling for clean sheets recently. Away win.

This is a catch-up game for Sunderland in League One. A win for them will move them up into third place in the table, still with two games in hand over the top-two of Luton and Barnsley. So this is an important game for the Black Cats. Accrington have pressure on them at the other end of the table, staring only two points clear of the drop zone. Read our Accrington v Sunderland betting tips for more.
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on March 31st, 2019 at 7:33 p.m.)
Accrington are feeling the heat in a congested fight for survival in League One. They lost 1-0 out at Fleetwood on the weekend. That was their fifth defeat in their last six games (W1). Stanley are W5 D6 L7 at home this season in the league and they have scored a total of 19 home games this campaign. They have conceded at an average of 1.3 goals per home game. Just 39% of their home games have made it over 2.5 goals this season, and that is despite them taking a clean sheet in just 11% of home fixtures.
Accrington are currently on a three-match losing streak at home and they are without a clean sheet in any of their last five. Home and away, they have not earned a clean sheet in any of their last ten league fixtures. Accrington have scored 63% of their home goals in the second half of games. There are only three sides in the division with worse home records than what Accrington have.
This will be the first meeting between the two at the Crown Ground
Sunderland and Accrington drew 2-2 at the Stadium of Light in February
The Black Cats picked up a 2-1 home win over Walsall on the weekend, which kept their undefeated home form intact for them. Their away record for the term is at W8 D8 L2 and they are currently undefeated in their last seven out on the road. Home and away they have not suffered a defeat in any of their last sixteen. It is all about momentum now and putting in a powerful finish.
Just 33% of their away games this season have gone over 2.5 goals with them having conceding at under a goal per away game this season. Each of their last seven away games have gone under the 2.5 goal line. The Black Cats have earned a clean sheet in 33% of their League One away fixtures. Sunderland have scored 65% of their away goals in the second period of fixtures. They have opened the scoring in 11 of their 18 road games.
These games in hand that Sunderland have over the others in the race for an automatic promotion spot are so important. Given that Accrington are so poorly out of form at the moment, and given the defensive strengths of Sunderland, the away win fits.

* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on February 17th, 2019 at 6:42 p.m.)
Sunderland had to settle for a point at home agents Accrington on the weekend. That was their sixth draw in their last seven league games (W1). It also means that they have drawn four of their last five League One games at the Stadium of Light (W1). So it’s just not been happening for them recently. A point out of this could lift them up into third in midweek, at the expense of Portsmouth (if Pompey get nothing at home against Bristol Rovers that night). Sunderland are still unbeaten at home through this season which is a huge positive.
The Black Cats are W8 D8 L0 at home now this season in the league. They have won just two of their seven home games against sides currently in the top half of the table (D5). So they have performed better against lower-ranked teams. Sunderland have averaged 1.9 goals per home game, taking a clean sheet in a quarter of their home games. They have hit the back of the net in every league game played this season, but are without a clean sheet in three. Sunderland haven’t scored a first-half goal in any of their last five league games. They have been losing 1-0 at halftime in each of their last three.
Sunderland were 4-1 winners over Gillingham in August
The Black Cats are unbeaten in their last eight against Gillingham
Gillingham’s overall head to head against Sunderland is W1 D2 L6
This is their first meet at the Stadium of Light since 2005
Gillingham got a boost of three points on the weekend as they beat Scunthorpe 1-0 at home. That snapped a four-match winless streak of form that they were on. Overall this season they are W5 D3 L7 on their travels and they have collected four points from their last two road games. They have done alright away from home in having only lost two of six games on the road against sides currently in the top half of the table. In their last four on the road, they are W1 D1 L2.
They have failed to earn a clean sheet in any of their last four on the road. A big let-down for them this season has been their defence. Only Scunthorpe and Rochdale have worse defensive records in League One than the Gills have. They have collected the one clean sheet in their last eight games (home and away). They have tallied up three of them all season on their travels. The Gills start midweek action only three points away from the relegation zone.
Sunderland are such a hard side to beat as proven time and time again. We are going to back them to sneak over the line with three points in this one against the Gills who are in the bottom half of the table.

The Black Cats will be defending an unbeaten home record this season in League One. They are W8 D7 L0 overall in the division at the Stadium of Light. However, they have just lost their winning touch a little bit as they are W1 D3 in their last four league home games. Actually, home and away combined, Sunderland have drawn six of their last eight league games. Each of the six drawn games in that sequence were all 1-1 draws.
Each of Sunderland’s last three league victories have been 1-0 score lines. Sunderland have averaged just 0.87 goals against them at home this season. Remarkably the Black Cats have scored in every single league game this season. Overall home and away they are unbeaten in nine (W3 D6). Each of the nine games in that sequence ended under 2.5 goals as well.
Accrington are down in the bottom half of the table, not so far from the drop zone. They are out of form as well at the moment with just two points from their last six played. Stanley have only taken the one point from their last four out on the road as well. There is another telling factor in their form. They haven’t scored in any of their last six played.
Overall this season Accrington have produced a W5 D4 L7 record on their travels in League One. Just one of those away victories was against a side currently in the top half of the table. In total Accrington have produced a poor return of only 14 goals in sixteen away games this season. They have been level at the halftime break in one of those away games. Only bottom side Wimbledon have produced fewer league goals in the division than Accrington have.
Sunderland have proven to be a very tough nut to crack on home soil. They need a win to put pressure on those around them. A home win to nil looks a good fit for this Friday night action.

Sunderland are running in some very strong form at the moment with a five-match winning streak behind them. * (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on November 15th, 2018 at 1.12 p.m.)
It is a five-match winning streak of form that Sunderland are on in League One after beating Plymouth 2-0 last weekend. Their form at the Stadium of Light this season in the division reads W4 D3 L0 so they should be good enough to avoid defeat here. The Black Cats have not conceded a goal in any of their last four games (home and away combined) for a total of 398 minutes without having conceded a league goal. Sunderland to win to nil is at 13/8 odds for this fixture* (Betting odds taken on November 15th, 2018 at 4:41 pm).
They have averaged over two goals per fixture at the Stadium of Light this season, with 71% of their home fixtures having made it above the 2.5 goal line. Over 2.5 goals is at 17/20 odds* (Betting odds taken on November 15th, 2018 at 4:41 pm). Each of the last three played there have made it above the goal line. Because the current leaders Portsmouth are not in action this weekend then Sunderland will go top with a win, courtesy of goal difference.
Even though the Black Cats have not lost at home yet this season twice they have been trailing 1-0 at halftime at home. They have been winning at halftime in four of their seven home games so that is pretty strong and could push things towards a Sunderland/Sunderland half-time/ full-time consideration. Sunderland are currently 16 matches unbeaten in the league.
Sunderland and Wycombe will be meeting for the first time
There has been definite improvements coming from Wycombe as they have recorded four wins in their last six games. The notable thing about that though is that each of those were at home by the Chairboys. They took a 1-0 win over Peterborough last weekend. Both teams to score is at 10/11 odds* (Betting odds taken on November 15th, 2018 at 4:41 pm). The away form of Wycombe in League One this season reads W1 D3 L4 and the Chairboys have failed to win any of their last five on the road, losing their last two.
Out on the road, this season in league Two One Wycombe haven’t managed to get themselves a clean sheet so far. Going forward themselves, of the away goals that they have produced, 62% of them have come in the second half of games. In three of their eight games out on the road, they have been losing 1-0 at halftime. They have also conceded at least two goals all but two of their last six away games. In the correct score market a Sunderland 2-1 option is at 7/1 odds* (Betting odds taken on November 15th, 2018 at 4:41 pm). Wycombe may be able to cause the home side some problems but can they do enough to record a victory?
This could be an entertaining game as Wycombe are capable of producing in front of goal. Sunderland are still looking sharp though and a Sunderland to Win & Both Teams To Score option fits the bill nicely at the Stadium of Light.

This is a big clash from League One coming up on the weekend as this sees fourth-place Sunderland take on Fleetwood who are just two places back and only the three points adrift of the Black Cats. But both are carrying very good current form and this should be some battle between them at the Stadium of Light. Read our Sunderland v Fleetwood betting tips for more.
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on September 7th, 2018 at 00:10 a.m.)
The Black Cats have been carrying good form with them recently in League One and they remain undefeated for the season with a W4 D2 record. They were on a three-match winning streak before playing out a 1-1 home draw with Oxford last weekend. The Black Cats have actually only managed to pick up the one clean sheet this season in the league.
Therefore both teams to score at bet365 does have some appeal in our Sunderland v Fleetwood betting tips at 3/4 odds* (Betting Odds were taken on September 7th, 2018 at 00:10 a.m.). The Black Cats have averaged over two goals per game this season.
Their home form for the term reads W2 D1 and at the Stadium of Light, they have averaged exactly two goals per game. We will take that forward and look at a Sunderland 2-1 correct score option at 15/2 odds (Betting Odds were taken on September 7th, 2018 at 00:10 a.m.).
Three points would be a big coup for the Black Cats as that would move them six clear of Fleetwood and towards the top of the table. Sunderland will be missing Max Power who was sent off against Oxford last weekend.
The Cod Army have been improving well after losing their opening game of the season in league One. After that opening loss at home to Wimbledon, they have gone W3 D2 since then and they have been carrying away form. Their road form reads W2 D1 and they are the only side in the division not to have conceded an away goal this season.
But for our Sunderland v Fleetwood betting tips, we feel that this is going to be the time that they do. Over 2.5 goals is worth a look for the match at 17/20 odds (Betting Odds were taken on September 7th, 2018 at 00:10 a.m.).
Fleetwood also had a man sent off last weekend as Wes Burns picked up a first-half dismissal in their game against Bradford. Fleetwood have returned seven goals in their three road games this season, a large chunk of that coming in a 5-0 win at Scunthorpe.
The Cod Army finished in 14th last season in League One and their overall away form read W9 D3 L11. However with the current form of Joey Barton’s men they do look as if they will be competitive up in the northeast on the weekend. Three points could see them leapfrog the Black Cats in the table.
This will be the first meeting between Sunderland and Fleetwood.
This should be a good battle between two confident sides although we are going to lean on home soil being a difference-maker for the game. Fleetwood have a strong early away record, but we are striking with a straight home win in the match outright.
