So the Gunners have plenty of work to do. The Gunners cruised through the group stage of this competition but they had to come back in the last round after losing the first leg away from home. That was against Bate, Arsenal winning 3-0 back at the Emirates after a 1-0 away defeat. Arsenal have won only three of the 13 UEFA competition ties in which they were defeated away in the first leg, one of those happening against BATE.
The Gunners need the minimum of a 2-0 scoreline in this tie against Rennes. Alex Iwobi had put Arsenal ahead early in the first leg. But the telling point was a red card before half time for Sokratis Papastathopoulos. This will be Arsenal’s 26 game against French opposition and their 13th on home soil.
Arsenal have won only five of their previous 12 home games against French opposition, losing three. The last time they hosted a French side they played out a 2-2 draw against PSG in the 2016/17 Champions League group stage. The Gunners have won four of five two-legged UEFA ties against Frenchs sides. They lost their last one though, against Monaco in the 2014/15 Champions League.
This is the most successful UEFA competition campaign from Rennes in their history. They only got through to the knockout stages by the skin of their teeth, winning a must-win match on matchday six. They then pulled off an upset in beats Real Bets in the round of 32. Their only previous experience against English opposition before this meeting with Arsenal was a 2001 Intertoto cup semi-final against Aston Villa in which the two traded home wins.
Rennes are in their second Europa League campaign, and only managed three points in their first attempt back in 2011/12. Rennes took a 1-0 win in the Czech Republic on matchday five to beat Jablonec and that was their first away win in eight games. They followed that up with a very impressive 3-1 win at Betis. Rennes have won four of the previous six UEFA ties after having won the first leg at home.
The Gunners have enough scoring power behind them to get the win on the board at the Emirates. But they are vulnerable at the back and Rennes can make this interesting by getting on the scoresheet. Arsenal to win & both teams to score.

This is the furthest that Rennes have ever been in UEFA competition. During the group stage of this season’s competition, Rennes lost three in a row, but they managed to turn things around dramatically. On match day six they took a must-win success over Astana squeeze through. Just a hint at their threat, they caused an upset in the round of 32, by knocking out Real Betis.
The only previous meeting with English opposition that Rennes have had was in the 2001 Intertoto Cup semi-final when they lost on away goals. This is only their second appearance in the Europa League, not getting out of the group stage in their first attempt in 2011/12. Rennes are undefeated in their last twelve home games in all competitions, winning eight. Rennes are W2 D1 L1 in their four European home games this season.
This will be Arsenal’s 25th UEFA fixture going against French opposition. They are undefeated in twelve previous away games in France. Arsenal’s record in France is W8 D4. Their last trip to France ended in a 1-1 draw at PSG which ended a seven-match winning streak that they were on in away games against French opposition. Last season Arsenal won 5-1 on aggregate against AC Milan in the Europa League round of sixteen.
That was the first time in eight years that they had won at that stage of a European competition. In this season’s group stage, the Gunners won all three away games. But they did however, lose on the road at BATE in the last round. Their away record in two UEFA Europa League campaigns is W7 D1 L3, with 19 goals scored and seven conceded. All three defeats in that sequence were 1-0 losses.
This could be a tough challenge for Arsenal, especially if they are not sending out their strongest side in it. Rennes have some pretty good home form going and will be keen to keep the Gunners at arm’s length here. Draw.
