Rangers head into some competitive action in the first qualifying round of the Europa League. We aren’t likely to see a full strength side out in this one by them as they make the trip to Gibraltar. St Joseph came through the qualifying first round. Read our St Josephs v Rangers betting tips for more.
St Josephs 20/1
* (Betting Odds were taken from William Hill on July 7th, 2019 at 3:49 a.m.)
This fixture has been scheduled for Tuesday because of St Joseph’s ground isn’t suitable for European matches by UEFA’s standards. So they are going to be playing this at the Victoria Stadium (home of the Gibraltar National Team) because another team (Europa) is playing there in the Europa League on Thursday.
St Josephs came through the challenge of Prishtina (who was reduced to nine men in the second leg of their tie) to get through their preliminary qualification round with a 3-1 win. This is the second time that they have been in the Europa League 1st Qualifying Round. They lost 10-0 on aggregate against AEL Limassol in 2017. Their overall record in the Europa League (all qualifiers) is W1 D3 L2.
Last season Rangers made it all the way from the first qualifying round into the group stage of the main draw. They didn’t make it any further. In the season before that, they lost in a shocker against Progres Niederkorn in the first qualifying round. But their run last year under Steven Gerrard through the qualifiers was solid and unspectacular as you would expect.
Their overall record in the UEFA Cup/Europa League is W39 D28 L28. Rangers have been busy in pre-season beating Mansfield, TNS and then putting a 5-0 win over Oxford on the board on Sunday in some friendly action. A clean sheet for Rangers is at 3/10* (Betting Odds were taken from William Hill on July 7th, 2019 at 3:49 a.m.).
This should be a routine game for Rangers. Their understrength teams have looked relatively sharp in their pre-season friendly work. They shouldn’t find the going tough against St Josephs who finished third in their league last year. Rangers to win to nil.

There’s no looking back now for Rangers. The fate of their Europa League season hangs in the balance and the only way that they get to extend it is by winning. That’s the simple order of the night for the Scottish side. As for Rapid, they are looking to hone in on winning the group which they will do if they can better Villarreal’s result on the night. Read our Rapid Vienna v Rangers betting tips for more.
Rapid Vienna 29/20
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on December 11th, 2018 at 2:17 p.m.)
Rapid Vienna only needs a draw out of this game to get through to the next round. If they lose though they will be eliminated, so it’s a thin line in that respect. If they better whatever Villarreal do on the night then Rapid will go through as group winners. They are the only side in Group G to have won more than one of their games and that was in beating Spartak Moscow twice. Last season they took a third-place finish in the Austrian Bundesliga and entered the Europa League in the third qualifying round. This is their seventh Europa League group stage campaign, making it to the knockout stages just once before.
Rapid Vienna are unbeaten in their last seven European home games (W4 D3). They have produced a W3 D1 record in their four home games this season in Europe. In an impressive run, Rapid Vienna have also gone twelve games unbeaten in Europa League group stage fixtures at home (W7 D5). Their record against Scottish opposition is W4 D2 L5 and their home form in that sequence of games is W3 D1 L1.
Before this season the only previous meetings was in the 1964 European Cup
Rangers won both meetings with a clean sheet
Rangers need a win out in Austria to get through to the next round of the competition. Nothing else will do for them. Rangers have taken three draws in their five group stage games so far, but their lone win of the campaign said come at Ibrox against Rapid. Rangers are one of four teams in the group stage who started in the first qualifying round and this is their first appearance in the group stage of the competition. The Gers have drawn 12 of their last 20 European away games (W1 L7).
In the group so far away from home, they drew 2-2 at Villarreal and suffered a 4-3 loss at Spartak Moscow. Five of the ten matches in Group F have been drawn. In their last nine away games in all competitions this season Rangers are W3 D2 L4. From their two previous visits to Austria, Rangers are W1 L1. Overall Rangers are W5 L1 from six previous games against Australian opposition
Rapid Vienna will probably end up being grateful for home advantage in this pressure situation. A draw is enough for them on the night to secure qualification. Rangers have to have a good go at this but we still fancy home advantage to take it. Rapid to win & both teams to score.

Rangers really need to come up with a win in this one to boost their chances of making it through to the next round. If they lose however and Spartak beat bottom side Rapid Vienna on the night, that’s Rangers out. It’s thin margins in Group G and Villarreal will get the group win if they succeed at Ibrox. Rangers are trailing Villarreal by a point in the group so everything is to play for here. They were on a great eleven match unbeaten streak of form in Europe under Steven Gerrard, before a crazy 4-3 loss against Spartak Moscow on matchday four. Rangers had taken the lead three times in that game but just couldn’t convert. Rangers can’t book a qualification spot on Thursday night, but they can set themselves up well for matchday six, particular if they can win this game.
Rangers took a 2-2 draw at Villarreal on matchday one with a great performance, twice coming from behind. This is the first European campaign in six years for Rangers and it is their first group stage campaign in the Europa League. Rangers have European home form with a W5 D3 record in their last eight. Both teams to score is at 8/13 odds* (betting odds taken on November 27th, 2018 at 9:38 pm). So far at home in the group they beat Rapid Vienna 3-0 before a 0-0 draw with Spartak. Rangers have only won 3 of 23 previous games against Spanish opposition, but all three wins were at Ibrox. Rangers are D4 L2 in their last six home games against Spanish sides though.
The matchday one meeting was the first game between the two clubs
While it hasn’t been a great season from the Yellow Submarine in La Liga, they are top of their Europa League group and will win the group if they get maximum points in this one. They have lost just once in seven matches against Scottish opposition before but have never won a game in Scotland before. Their most recent visit to Scotland ended in a 2-0 at Celtic in the 2008/9 Champions League.
Villarreal have qualified from each of their seven previous Europa League campaigns and they are now on a ten-match unbeaten streak of away form in the Europa League group stage. That is just W3 D7 in that sequence though. The 1-1 correct score option in this is at 11/2 odds* (betting odds taken on November 27th, 2018 at 9:38 pm). Villarreal have drawn their two away games in the group s so far, a 3-3 at Spartak and a 0-0 at Rapid. No team has played more Europa league games or scored more goals in the competition (not including qualifying) than Villarreal have.
These two were evenly matched in the first contest and given the amount of draw that Villarreal have done out on the road, then the most appealing option is the draw in the match outright here. That does keep things open and full of drama for matchday six.
