Germany secured their place at Euro 2020 on Saturday with a comfortable home win over Belarus. A win in this one will guarantee that they take the top spot, not that it matters. Northern Ireland’s slim chances of automatic qualification faded on Saturday as they were held to a home draw by the Netherlands. Read our Germany vs Northern Ireland betting tips for more.
Northern Ireland 14/1
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on November 16th, 2019 at 8:18 p.m.)
A 4-0 home win by Germany was secured over Belarus on Saturday leaving them top of Group C by two points over the Netherlands. That continued a strong scoring streak of form that they have been on. Germany have scored at least two goals in each of their last eight internationals (competitive and friendly). So they are in good shape and have posted a W2 L1 record on home soil in this campaign, the reverse happening against the Netherlands.
German’s scoring on the weekend took them up to 24 goals in seven games, a scoring rate which is likely going to pose Northern Ireland some problems. Die Mannschaft have tallied up 14 goals in their three home games played. The loss against the Dutch in this campaign is the only home defeat that the Germans have suffered since the end of last year’s World Cup, part of a W4 D4 L1 record taken in that sequence. It has been just two home wins in their last six (competitive and friendly).
Germany are on an eight-match winning streak against the Irish
NI are D3 L8 in their eleven previous games against the Germans
Germany have conceded one goal only in their last four against the Irish
NI last visited Germany in 2016 and lost 2-0
Northern Ireland had to beat the Netherlands on Saturday to stand a chance of qualifying for Euro 2020 automatically. They could only play out a 0-0 draw, the key moment being a missed first-half penalty by Steven Davis. So the Irish will be going to the playoffs now. So nothing is riding on this game other than the chance to get a major lift of confidence by beating one of the best in the world.
That’s easier said than done though of course. Northern Ireland have won three of their last four away games (L1), and in this qualification campaign, they have won at Estonia and Belarus, while they lost 3-1 in the Netherlands. In European Championship qualification away games, the loss against the Dutch is the only one of two defeats that the Irish have suffered in their last eight such fixtures (W5 D1 L2). For a side who have scored 8 goals in 7 qualification matches, overpowering the Germans is going to be tough.
Unfortunately for Northern Ireland, a lack of goal-scoring threat is probably going to trip them up again against one of the stronger nations. Germany are delivering well in front of goal and with no pressure, a home win to nil looks a decent proposition.

It is down to the wire now for Northern Ireland as they have to come up with three points in this one. Doing so would leave them level on points with the Netherlands with one game each left to play. Anything less than a win for Northern Ireland would likely see them eliminated on the night. Read our Northern Ireland vs Netherlands betting tips for more.
Northern Ireland 15/2
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on November 12th, 2019 at 1:18 p.m.)
Northern Ireland’s qualification hopes are not all in their own hands. They are three points behind both the Netherlands and Germany in the race for qualification. So not only are they going to have to go out and beat the Netherlands in this one, but then Northern Ireland would have to beat Germany in their final qualifier. Head coach Michael O’Neill is leaving his job to take over at Stoke. But he stays on until the end of the qualifiers.
The Irish are W4 L2 in their six matches, beating Belarus and Estonia in both respective meetings before falling to back to back losses against the Dutch and the Germans. Northern Ireland looked on course to cause a huge upset in winning in the Netherlands last time out, then looked set for a point with 10 minutes to go as the Netherlands levelled it up.
But the Dutch would go on to score twice in stoppage time to sink the Irish challenge. The defeats against the Netherlands and Germany were both by a two-goal margin. Northern Ireland were undefeated seven European Championship home qualifiers before dropping their game against Germany at Windsor Park in September.
The Netherlands earned a 3-1 home win in the first group meeting
The Dutch have won the last three meetings
Northern Ireland have scored in just one of the last three meetings
The last meeting in Belfast was in 1977 which the Irish lost 1-0
The Netherlands need one more win to get them to Euro 2020. They collected a narrow away win in Belarus in their last qualifier, taking them out to a four-match winning streak in the group. That started with a 4-2 away success in Germany, having lost at home against Die Mannschaft earlier in the campaign. So the Dutch are sat level with Germany on fifteen points from this campaign.
The goals have been flying around from the Dutch who are averaging just over three goals per qualifier. They have scored a total of ten goals in their three away qualifiers in this group. The Netherlands were on a six-match winless streak of away form (competitive and friendly) before the start of this qualification campaign. They have, however, won five of their last six European Championship away qualifiers (L1) and are on a four-match winning streak in such fixtures.

This is such a tough situation for Northern Ireland. They have to go for broke but have two massive games to come. They can be buoyed by nearly getting themselves a draw in the Netherlands last time out. Can they stir themselves for a big night at Windsor Park? The attacking threat of the Dutch looks too good. Away win.

If Northern Ireland could win this fixture, they would be in a great position to secure themselves qualification for Euro 2020. A draw out of it wouldn’t be a terrible result for them. The Irish are sat in second place in Group C, three points ahead of the Dutch but having played a game more than their opponents. Can they dig out a result on the road? Northern Ireland 16/1

The Netherlands will move ahead of Northern Ireland on the tie-breaker if they collect three points in this one. It’s a huge home fixture for them. The Dutch are sat at W3 L1 in their four games so far in the group, the one-loss happening against Germany. But they showed some character to come back and beat the Germans in their second group meeting, putting four goals past Die Mannschaft.
The Netherlands have tallied 14 goals in four group games. That is twice as many as Northern Ireland have managed in five fixtures. The Dutch have scored exactly four goals in three of their four group games so far. The Netherlands are on a poor sequence of form in home European Championship qualifiers. They are only W1 D1 L3 in their last five such games on home soil. The one win there was against Belarus. If they win this, they are in the driving seat for qualification at the expense of Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland have only beaten the Netherlands once before
The Dutch have won the last two meetings
Northern Ireland have failed to score in three of their last four against the Netherlands
This is the first meeting since 2012, a friendly
The Irish have had a good campaign, winning all four of their games against Belarus and Estonia. But then came a stiffer challenge of meeting Germany for the first time in the group and the Irish fell to a 2-0 loss in Belfast. So a response in this one against the Dutch would be huge for Northern Ireland. A victory would leave them in a great position, a draw, not too bad off. They, have to get something out of their back-to-back fixtures against the Dutch or they will be done and dusted.
Northern Ireland have won five of their last six games (competitive and friendly) but as expected the goals don’t fly in from them frequently. The Irish are undefeated in their last four away European Championship qualifiers (W3 D1) and have lost just one of their last seven on the road in such fixtures. Northern Ireland have collected a clean sheet in just one of their last five European Championship qualifiers away from Windsor Park. It’s a big one, can they hang in there and avoid defeat against the free-scoring Dutch?
The Dutch are in pretty good shape at the moment and given Northern Ireland’s misfire against Germany in their last qualifier, that leans towards this being a difficult night away from home for the Irish. The Netherlands to win to nil.

Northern Ireland made it three wins from three at the start of Eeuro 2020 qualification with a win over Estonia on Saturday. It’s back into action out on the road for them as they visit Belarus. Belarus are bottom without a point. The Irish need to continue taking maximum points ahead of much bigger tests to come. Read our Belarus v Northern Ireland betting tips for more.
Northern Ireland 13/8

Belarus are on a three-match losing streak at the moment after a 2-0 home loss against Germany on the weekend. That is eight goals that they have conceded in their three Euro 2020 qualification matches so far. Belarus had been on a good seven-match unbeaten streak of form before these qualifiers. That was from the Nations League where they were facing much weaker opposition than what they are coming up against in this group.
Belarus are W2 D1 L1 in their last four home games but came up a long way short of looking any kind of threat again Germany on Saturday. They have scored just one goal in their last three games now, which was in their 2-1 loss at Northern Ireland in their second qualification match of this campaign. The bonus for them is that they won their Nations League group so are at least guaranteed a Euro 2020 qualification play-off place. They aren’t likely to break the top two in this group.
Belarus lost 2-1 in Belfast earlier in this qualification campaign
This will be the first meeting between the two nations in Belarus
The Irish are on a three-match winning streak at the moment. That is crucial to their qualification hopes. They have to win all of these games against the weaker group opponents. That is because they are going to have big games against the Netherlands and Germany in the group to come. Northern Ireland don’t have the cushion of having earned a qualification play-off place via the Nations League, so have to book a top-two finish in this group. That’s going to be mightily tough.
But this still will have lifted their spirits. They had lost four of their previous six games (W1 D1) before the start of the Euro 2020 qualification campaign. They will want their defence to tighten up against because they have taken just one clean sheet in their last four games. As a positive in attack, they have scored exactly two goals in each of the last three games. The away form of the Irish isn’t great as they are only W1 D1 L2 in their last four games out on the road, failing to score in three of those.
Belarus are out of form and Northern Ireland know that their qualification hopes are going to be hugely dependent on them getting maximum points from games like this. They do have a bit of wind in their sails. Northern Ireland to win.

Northern Ireland are heading up Group C of Euro 2020 qualification after having got two games under their belt. They will guarantee that they stay there if they were to collect a win over Estonia this weekend. They have already beaten them in the campaign. Northern Ireland 10/11

Estonia suffered a 2-0 defeat against Northern Ireland in their one and only qualification match played. Their current form should not exactly worry Northern Ireland all that much as they have lost five of their last ten games played (W3 D2). It’s worth noting that their wins in that sequence were against Greece, Finland and Gibraltar, and the last two were both friendly matches. Estonia have produced just the one goal in their last three games now, that coming in their 1-0 win over Gibraltar.
Estonia had a bit of a rough time in the Nations League, to say the least. They finished bottom of their group after losing four of their six games. They were alongside Finals, Hungary and Greece in that group, Estonia failing to score in four of the six fixtures. Of Course, they were never expected to be a big threat in their Euro 2020 qualification group.
Northern Ireland beat Estonia 2-0 back in March in the first meeting
The Irish lead the head to head W3 L2 against Estonia
The last meeting in Estonia ended in a 4-1 home win
Estonia have won two of the last three competitive meetings
Northern Ireland have two wins from two under their belt. They were both home wins over Estonia and Belarus. Those were important wins against some of the weaker opposition in Group C. Things will start getting a lot tougher because the Irish still have to deal with meeting Germany and the Netherlands. So it is crucial that the Irish don’t drop any points in these easier games. The two wins that they recorded at the start of this campaign saw them shake off some poor form.
They were W1 D1 L4 in their six games prior to the start of Euro 2020 qualification. They failed to get a single point from their four games in the Nations League and managed just two goals in total in their fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria. While Northern Ireland are not a free-scoring side they have managed to take a clean sheet in three of their last six fixtures. It is obviously going to be a trickier night for them out on the road in Estonia than it was at Windsor Park against them, but still, it should be a manageable fixture for the Irish.
Estonia are not a real threat and the Irish handled themselves well enough against them in their first meeting. It’s hard to see Northern Ireland slipping up in this one after what has been a positive start to qualification. Northern Ireland to win.

Goals from Niall McGinn and Steven Davis gave Northern Ireland the 2-0 home victory over Estonia in Belfast on Thursday night. That was the start of their Euro 2020 qualification campaign. Northern Ireland really have to use these easier home games in the group to get some early momentum going in the qualification process. There will be bigger challenges to come in the form of the Netherlands and Germany in this tough group. The win over Estonia gave Northern Ireland a big lift, after having lost all four of their UEFA Nations League matches.
Before the game against Estonia, Northern Ireland had only scored three goals in eight competitive fixtures. Against Estonia, they looked as if they were struggling to put the ball in the back of the net despite plenty of possession and attacking threat. They did manage to get it together in the second half, so will be looking to drive towards making it six points from six at the start of this qualification campaign. Just once before have Belarus made a visit to Belfast, which was an international friendly in 2016 back Northern Ireland took a 3-0 victory in.
Belarus had a poor start to their Euro 2020 qualification campaign as they lost 4-0 in the Netherlands on Thursday night. They did manage to collect the group win in their Nations League campaign though, so they have already secured at least the play-off spot in the Euro 2020 qualification process through that route. This is a tough group to get automatic qualification from, so the playoffs are going to be very handy for the Belarusians.
Belarus have collected 14 wins from their previous 59 European Championship qualifying fixtures. Before they went to the Netherlands in midweek, Belarus were undefeated in three away games, winning the previous two against Luxembourg and San Marino. This is a much bigger step up in terms of the level of competition and intensity. During their World Cup 2018 qualification campaign, Belarus finished bottom of their group with only one win in the group.
Northern Ireland were comfortable enough against Estonia with only a bit of finishing quality going amiss at times. With plenty of attacking intent they should be able to pick up another three points in this fixture. Northern Ireland to win at 13/10 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on March 22nd, 2019 at 8:34 p.m.)

Northern Ireland 9/20
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on March 18th, 2019 at 6:26 p.m.)
The Irish need a bit of an upturn in form as they have lost four of their last six internationals (W1 D1). They struggled in the Nations League against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria. From their four games played against those two opponents, Northern Ireland failed to get a single point and only scored twice in the four games. The two goals that they did get were both at home so that is some kind of positive ahead of this fixture with Estonia. Northern Ireland have won two of their last three played on home soil, beating South Korea and Israel in friendly matches. The Irish have failed to score in three of their last four games, home and away. The last time they met Estonia was back in the Euro 2012 qualification campaign, and Northern Ireland suffered a 2-1 shock home defeat against them.
It was not a great Nations League campaign that Estonia put together either. They finished bottom of their group which means they drop all the way down into League D for the next time. In their six matches in the group, they lost four of them (W1 D1) and that was against Finland, Hungary and Greece. The two defeats which they took away from home at Hungary and Greece, Estonia failed to score in. However overall their form has been a little bit improved recently with two wins and a draw in their last three played. The victories in that sequence were over Greece and Finland. In total Estonia have only suffered one defeat in their last five home and away. The two wins in that sequence of five games were both away from home as well, so will they be able to challenge Northern Ireland? Estonia have scored in two of their last five away games only.
There should be enough here to back Northern Ireland to win to nil at even money odds* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on March 18th, 2019 at 6:26 p.m.). The Irish can’t afford to go dropping points on home soil.
