Germany as group winners, get a favourable draw in the first knockout stage of the Women’s World Cup. They haven’t looked spectacular in all honesty, but they have been efficient. Nigeria took the final spot of the four best third-placed teams, all thanks to Chile missing a penalty in their final group stage match. They will need a huge effort here. Germany Women 1/6

It was three wins from three for Germany in their World Cup group stage. They only took 1-0 wins over China and Spain, before cutting loose with a 4-0 win over South Africa in their final group stage match. So they are yet to concede and that appears to be their big strength. They have conceded in just two of their last seven games and none of their last four. The win over South Africa moved Germany to a fifteen match undefeated streak, winning thirteen of those.
They have also won six of their last eight World Cup fixtures too and will be expected to progress from this tie. There has not been the big output from their star striker Alexandra Popp who has scored just one goal so far in the competition. They have at times, looked happy to just sit in and not expose themselves too much. Either way, if they do that or get a little bit more expansive against Nigeria as they did against South Africa, the Germans don’t look likely to concede.
The Nigerians were in a tough group to start with. They were in Group A alongside France, Norway and South Korea. After a heavy opening 3-0 loss against Norway, they responded with three points in a clean sheet victory over South Korea. They then put in a gallant effort in their final group stage game against host nation France. Everyone expected them to get overawed, and it was only a retaken penalty which saw the French take a 1-0 win.
The Nigerians have lost three of their last four games now and in their last six fixtures, their only two wins have been against Thailand and Korea Republic. So not the strongest of form there. It is also worth a look at their actual form in the World Cup. They are W2 D1 L6 in their last nine games in the Finals. They have lost four of their last five. All six of those defeats in that sequence saw Nigeria fail to score a goal in.
Germany look more than strong enough to avoid any upset or scare in this one. They are so good at the back efficient with the ball and just aren’t going to give much away. Germany Women to win to nil is a great proposition.

Nigeria Women v France Women Women’s World Cup Preview, 17th June 8.00pm
France will need just a point from this game to earn top spot in Group A of the Women’s World Cup. They have opened with back to back wins after some strong performances. Nigeria opened their World Cup account with a 3-0 reverse against Norway, with all of those goals coming against them in the first half of the match. So they were pretty much out of it before the game had even really gotten going. They did come up with a response in their second fixture though as they beat South Korea 2-0.
Nigeria are W3 L4 in their last seven games now with the other wins in that sequence were against Slovakia and Thailand. In their last nine World Cup fixtures now, the African nation have managed to come up with just the three wins (D1 L6). Their goals against South Korea snapped a three-match scoreless streak that they were on in World Cup fixtures. It is going to be a big ask for them to beat the host. But they did win their final group stage game of the 2011 edition against Canada.
After their ruthless opening win over South Korea at the World Cup, the French were made to work hard for their second against Norway. There was a bit of controversy as well in their win over the Norwegians as France’s second goal came from a dodgy penalty decision given to them. As expected Eugenie Le Sommer has been among the goals but Valerie Guavin was involved in everything up front for them and is a 4/5 anytime goalscorer* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on June 14th, 2019 at 9:00 p.m.)
Gauvin got France’s opener against Norway. France have put together a six-match winning streak at the moment. They have won 15 of their last 16 games, Germany the only ones to have gotten the better of them in that sequence. France have scored at least two goals in each of their last six games now, taking a clean sheet in three of those. They don’t look as if they are going to ease up. If they win the group they will go through to face one of the best third-placed teams in the round of sixteen.
Another win should be coming for the French in this one. They have shown their class and quality plenty of times already in this competition and they should keep it up. They will keep that momentum going. France to win to nil.

Nigeria Women 14/5

There was a 3-0 defeat dished out to Nigeria against Norway in their opening World cup. This will represent their best chance of picking up any points in this group stage. The same can be said of South Korea as well of course. Nigeria are now W2 L4 in their last six fixtures, losing their last two. The two wins that they did record in that sequence happened against Slovakia and Thailand. That was part of their Cyprus Women’s Cup tournament back in March, losing the other two games at the event. In their last six games, Nigeria have earned just one clean sheet. They are the highest ranked of the CAF representatives taking part at the tournament.
South Korea had a tough night in Paris against hosts France in the opening game of the tournament. They were just on the back foot from the very start of the affair and could barely get a decent kick of the ball. They ended up losing that fixture 4-0. That is a four-match winless streak of form that the South Korea team are on at the moment now, losing three of those. Back in the FFA Cup of Nation they did take clean sheets wins over Argentina and New Zealand, both of which are in this tournament. So that could at least give them believe that they can target a good three points in this one.
South Korea looks the better of the two sides here, despite their opening result. The fact that they got a couple of notable wins earlier this calendar year against stronger opposition in the Cyprus Cup does indicate that they could be the ones who are more likely to collect the victory. South Korea to win.
