The winner of this tie will go and make a trip to non-League side Maldon & Tiptree in the second round of this season’s FA Cup. So both will be recognising a huge opportunity to make it through to the third round eventually. It was a 1-1 draw in Cleethorpes in the first meeting. Who will settle this? Neither of these League Two sides have much form going on. Newport have taken one win in their last five games in all competitions (D2 L2). That was a home win though in league action against Scunthorpe. Newport haven’t done badly at Rodney Parade lately having posted a W2 D2 L1 record there in their last five. They have only lost twice on home soil this season, once in the EFL Cup against West Ham and then against Salford in league action at the start of November.
Just once in their last six home fixtures have Newport managed to score more than one goal in a game. They are without a clean sheet in three there. The Exiles had a very good time of things at home last season’s FA Cup, beating Welsh rivals Wrexham, Premier League side Leicester and then Championship side Middlesbrough before bowing out against Man City.
Newport have won three of their last four home games against Grimsby 1-0 (D1)
Both teams have scored in two of the last eleven meetings
Five of the last eight meetings have ended in a home win
Grimsby have won one of the last six meetings
The Mariners had quite a bright start to the new season, but that has since fallen away when troubles hit around the start of September. Grimsby have failed to get a win in any of their last five games now, losing three of those. They have managed just two victories in their last 12 games across all competitions. They did almost get across the line in this FA Cup tie, however, having taken the lead at Blundell Park just before half time.
They conceded an equalizing penalty 10 minutes from time. Grimsby have lost four of their last five away games played in the FA Cup, and each of those defeats were by a 1-0 scoreline. They have lost three of their last four trips to Newport by a 1-0 scoreline as well (0-0). Grimsby have failed to score in five of their last nine road games in the FA Cup.
The trend of 1-0 scorelines has to pique some big interest in this FA Cup tie. Newport shaded things in terms of performance in the first go at this FA Cup tie. Grimsby may well kick themselves having failed to hold on at home. Newport to win.

League Two side Newport County have the chance to pull off a League Cup giant-killing act on Tuesday night. They will be welcoming Premier League side West Ham to Rodney Parade. Can the Exiles pull off an upset? Read our Newport v West Ham betting tips for more.
West Ham 4/11
Newport County 7/1

Newport are carrying a bit of form with them this season as they are unbeaten across their five games played in all competitions. The most notable aspect of their season has been the strength of their defence. Newport have claimed a clean sheet four of their five games played.
They were out on the road against Gilllingham in the first round of this season’s League Cup. Newport won through on a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw. That was just the third win in their last nine League Cup fixtures. They have lost the last two EFL Cup home fixtures, conceding exactly 3 goals in both of those.
West Ham collected a 3-1 away win at Watford in the Premier League on the weekend. That was the first victory of the season for them. Perhaps the one concerning thing for them is that they have not taken a clean sheet yet this season. West Ham made it to the fourth round of last season’s League Cup where they were beaten by London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
West Ham do have a pretty good record in the EFL Cup, having won five of their last seven played. The Hammers have won three of their last four away games in the competition, scoring at least two goals in each of those three successes. Two of those three wins were against lower-ranked opposition as well (Cheltenham and AFC Wimbledon)
We don’t see any hint of an upset happening here although West Ham may have to be patient early on against a well organised Newport defence. There is no need for West Ham to go full strength that this, but they can even keep enough on the bench to see themselves through comfortably. West Ham to win two-nil.

It will be a quick reunion for these two clubs. They were up against each other in the League Two playoffs last season. It was Newport who came out on top, but then went on to lose in the final. So they have to reboot and start all over again. Read our Newport v Mansfield betting tips for more.

The Exiles made it to the playoffs in League Two last season by earning a seventh-place finish in League Two. Newport produced a W14 D6 L3 record on home soil last season to get their shot at promotion through those playoffs. It was Mansfield that they met in the semi finals and after getting past that challenge they then lost to Tranmere in the playoff final. So it’s back to business again in League Two.
Newport closed out last season with a tremendous ten-match undefeated streak of form. Their defence was brilliant as well in that sequence of form, conceding just the three goals in that run of ten games. Across the course of the seasons at Rodney Parade Newport conceded at under a goal per game. They scored at an average of 1.4 goals per game. In total, they managed to take a clean sheet in 57% of their league home games. Of their fourteen home fixtures, eight of them were by a one-goal margin.
These two met four times last season
Each of the last three meetings have gone under 2.5 goals
Both teams have scored in just one of the last five meetings
Their record was an event at one win and two draws the last term
The Stags rocked things on home soil in the division last term. Their away record fell a long way short in comparison though. They went just W6 D11 L6 on the road, but if you look at it from the perspective of not losing often, it wasn’t bad. Mansfield produced an average of 1.35 goals per away game, conceding at 1.1 per game. Less than half of their road fixtures during the campaign made it over 2.5 goals. All six of the losses that they suffered away from Field Mill were by one goal margin exactly. Mansfield claimed only one win in their last nine away games last season, losing five of those.
Just because the Stags weren’t great on their travels last season, we are leaning towards Newport. They both carried a lot of strengths and positives but the home defence may be the difference-maker on the day. Home win.

It is onto the wonderful world of playoff football now and the opening blows of the League Two play-off campaign starts with this fixture. This one features Newport who just did enough on the last day of the season to squeeze themselves into these playoffs, taking on Mansfield who finished fourth in the table. Never had a tight squeeze to reach the playoffs but they got there in the end, up with a draw against Morecambe on the weekend. A loss there and they would have been beaten to the punch by Colchester. But none of that matters now and Newport are in the door and will be looking to make the most of home advantage in this tie. They did have a very good season on home soil in their League Two campaign, posting a W14 D6 L3 record at Rodney Parade. They do have some very good momentum going on home soil at the moment as they are undefeated in each of their last seven fixtures there.
Overall home and away, Newport are undefeated in 10 league games. They have won each of their last three at Rodney Parade, conceding just the one goal in that sequence of results. Their defence has been superb this season and they have claimed a clean sheet in six of their last eight league fixtures. So that is a highly impressive return. Across the course of the regular season, Newport conceded at under a goal per game at home on average. Just 35% of league fixtures at Rodney Parade made it over 2.5 goals, Newport claiming a clean sheet in 57% of home fixtures. Newport have conceded only one goal in their last seven home fixtures.
The two traded homes win the regular season
Both teams have NOT scored in the last three meetings
Four of the last five meetings have produced a home win (D1)
Newport have won two of their last six home games against the Stags
Mansfield looked in with a great chance of earning automatic promotion from League Two this season. However, their form nosedived right at the end of the campaign, losing their last three matches on the bounce. So that means they finished fourth in the table and this is going to be a difficult first leg of this playoff. During the course of the regular season, Mansfield won only six away games (D11 L6) and when the pressure was really on during their run-in at the end of the season, they lost their last two away fixtures at Oldham and at the MK Dons. It left them on a three-match streak without an away win.
That doesn’t quite tell the whole picture though because they have claimed just one victory in their last nine away fixtures. Interestingly the Stags did not win away from home at any of the other top seven finishers in the league, losing two of those six such fixtures. Mansfield earned a clean sheet in 26% of their away fixtures this season and all of the six defeats which they suffered on their travels during their League Two campaign, happened by just the one-goal margin. They did finish the season with the fourth best offensive record, and they ended the campaign with the best defensive record in League Two. Can they shake off this slump in form though?
Right now going into this one it looks as if it is Newport who may well be able to open an advantage here. They have produced some fantastic home form and given the slump in away from that Mansfield have suffered, a narrow home win in a low scoring fixture looks good.

There is nothing at stake in this one for Oldham who are likely to finish in the mid-table area. As for Newport though they have a little bit more to play for. The victory in this one will send them all the way up to seventh place in the table which is the final playoff spot. Then heading into the final weekend of action it would leave a scrap between five teams for that one remaining playoff spot. Read our Newport v Oldham betting tips for more.

So this game then really is all about Newport to keep in their playoff hopes alive. A win will jump them up into seventh place while if they can only settle for a point then it means that they will have a lot more work to do on the final weekend to get themselves into to the playoffs. Newport are in some great form at the moment as they are currently on an unbeaten eight-match streak in the league, winning five of those. On the weekend they collected a 1-0 home victory over Lincoln. Their home form is right on the money at the moment as they are undefeated in their last six home games and they have won their last two there. Overall this season Newport have posted a home record of W13 D6 L3.
About have averaged 1.3 goals per home game while they have conceded at an average of exactly one per game. Just 36% of Newport home games have gone over 2.5 goals this season. That is in large because of how good the Newport defence has been as it has earned a clean sheet in 55% of their home fixtures. Both teams have scored in just 36% of Newport’s home games. The home wins which they have recorded this season eight of them have been by a one-goal margin. In the last eight rounds of league action, there is no side in the division which has earned a more points than what Newport have done. They currently boast the fifth best home record in the entire division.
Newport earned a 1-0 away win at all Oldham earlier this season
That was the first competitive meeting between the two sides in league action
The season for Oldham is done and dusted as they cannot reach the playoffs even if they were to pick up a victory in this game. Their away record this season overall is W6 D78 L8 and they lost out at Exeter on the weekend. That snapped a six-match undefeated streak of form home and away that over them had been on. Wins have been hard to come by for them out on the road as they have taken only the one victory in their last seven away games in league two. In their away games against the current top 10 sides this season, all them have a W1 D3 L6 record.
In total Oldham have taken a clean sheet in 45% of their away games this season and they have scored an average of 1.1 goals per road game. Under half of their away games this season have gone over 2.5 goals. Interestingly of the six away wins which they have recorded this season all of them have been by at least a two goal margin. Oldham have been level at the half-time break in 11 of their 22 away games. They conceded 60% of their away goals in the second period of fixtures. It has actually not been a bad season from them at all but they have just fallen short of that play-off target. Will they be able to dig out and away win to put pressure on Newport’s play-off ambitions?
You have two teams here with pretty good defensive records behind them and that may mean that this is a low scoring game. The onus is on Newport really to come out and push for that crucial victory. Home win.

Man City 1/20
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on February 13th, 2019 at 3:34 a.m.)
League Two side Newport have a bit of a mountain to climb then. Is it damage control from the off? Newport had a home game in the league in midweek, suffering a loss against the MK Dons. In their last seven games in all competitions, Newport are W3 D2 L2. The Exiles have been pretty solid at Rodney Parade is has to be said. They have won four of their last six there in all competitions (D1 L1).
But of course, they haven’t faced anything like what they are going to on the weekend. Newport’s FA Cup journey started with a win at the Met. Police and then they needed a replay at home to get past Wrexham. Then they caused an upset, a big one in taking out Premier League side Leicester at home. It was another home upset they caused in the last round in beating Championship side Middlesbrough in a replay.
With a full week off since thumping Chelsea 6-0 in the Premier League last weekend, Man City are a side who can’t stop scoring. In just two games in all competitions have they failed to net. They have produced some remarkable score lines this year. City have scored at least two goals in all but two of their eleven matches played in the 2019 calendar year.
In the third round of this season’s FA Cup, they beat Burnley 5-0. Then they posted a 7-0 win over Rotherham in the last round. With other major scorelines of a 9-0 EFL Cup win over Burton and their 6-0 drubbing of Chelsea in the EPL, Newport fans may secretly be fearing the worst. City have won four of their last five away games, but those are the only four wins in their last eight road games in all competitions (D1 L3).
Given some of the score lines that City have produced recently, most punters will only be thinking about the size of a City victory here. They should be able to do it by at least three goals.

When these two met at the Riverside back at the end of January, that was the first ever meeting that they had had. Now in such a short space of time, they are at it again after their 1-1 draw. Newport are in the bottom half of League Two and they aren’t in any kind of great form really. They have only managed to take the three wins in their last four games across all competitions. Two of those three wins though, were in the FA Cup. That was a 4-0 win over Wrexham in a second-round replay, and then a 2-1 upset against Premier League side Leicester in the last round. They have been struggling for wins, but at Rodney Parade they have been tough to beat. The Exiles have only lost one of their last 12 home games in all competitions. So that is some strength that they have there and they have actually collected a clean sheet in three of their last four home fixtures. If you want to extend that back a little bit further, then they have five clean sheets in their last eight at home
Boro really stood up to a big challenge on the weekend in the Championship, as they got themselves a 3-2 win at West Brom in a big showdown. That moved Boro onto seven matches unbeaten across all Compton (W4 D3). Boro almost got across the finish line when these two met at the Riverside. They shipped an equaliser in stoppage time. So this could be a bit of an uncomfortable away game for them, but Boro are clear favourites. Middlesbrough are a tough side to break down and they are on a streak of form where they have lost only one of their last 12 road fixtures in all competitions. Boro have hit the back of the net in each of their last seven road games as well. However, in that same spell of seven games, Boro have conceded in six of them. This will be Middlesbrough’s first ever visit to Rodney Parade.
Now, this may not be the most comfortable of evenings for Middlesbrough down in South Wales, they should be able to find their way through to the fifth round. We are expecting another tight game and Middlesbrough to win by a one-goal margin looks a solid proposition at 13/5 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on February 2nd, 2019 at 9:12 p.m.)

This is why the FA Cup is still great. League Two side Newport get to forget all about their slump in league form and put themselves against one a Premier League side. The Foxes are strong favourites to get the win on the board, but it’s one of those games where the hint of it being a banana skin is just there. Read our Newport v Leicester betting tips for more.
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on 3rd January 2019 at 11:43 p.m.)
Newport will be playing host to Leicester for the first time in their history. This is a great draw for them, just what a League Two side wants. The chance to throw everything at causing an upset at home against a Premier League side. The Exiles aren’t in the great of form at the moment as they are winless in four games. Across their last seven games played they have collected just the one win, so they have gone off the boil.
After opening to first-round win over the Met Police, Newport needed a replay back on home soil to see off Wrexham in the last round. Even though they aren’t in great form, they have done well at Rodney Parade this season, as they have suffered the one defeat in their last nine played there. Newport have earned a clean sheet in all but two of their last six home games.
Leicester have won three of their last four games (L1) and there have been notable wins in that sequence. Those three wins were against Chelsea, Man City and then away at Everton on New Year’s Day. So that’s some good results which they have picked up, although the loss in that sequence was a poor one at Cardiff recently. So they make a quick return to Wales.
Leicester have won their last two on the road and are W3 D2 L1 in their last six away from home. Each of the last three away wins that Leicester have taken have been by a 1-0 scoreline. Each to their last six games away from the King Power have ended under 2.5 goals. They haven’t been as strong in front of goal this season, so it may be a low scoring affair. Last season the Foxes made it through to the quarterfinals.
Leicester to win to nil at 6/5 odds gets our nod in this one* (betting odds taken from bet365 on January 3rd, 2019 at 10:08 pm). The Foxes have not been broken down too easily on their travels this season and so we can see them holding their own and getting a low scoring victory.
4th January 2019 / lee - Category: FA Cup & League Cup Betting
Tottenham were extremely poor in their efforts down at Rodney Parade but they will surely have to be better back on home soil for this replay. As for Newport, the Exiles may have missed their opportunity to pull off a huge shock after conceding that late equaliser.
Tottenham 1/9, Draw 17/2, Newport 33/1 (Betting Odds taken on February 2nd, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.)
Tottenham survived a bit of a gruelling battle at Rodney Parade in their FA Cup fourth-round tie against League Two side Newport, but they will be expected to ease their way to the next round in this Wembley replay. The Lilywhites will have had less of a rest going into this one as they played Liverpool on Sunday in league action. Tottenham’s home form is well on point at the moment with an unbeaten streak of eleven going (W9 L2) so they are shaping up well. They eased past Wimbledon at Wembley in the third round of the FA Cup and each of their last three victories on home soil have been with a clean sheet. Spurs to win to nil at bet365 will be a temper at odds of 4/6* (Betting Odds taken on February 4th, 2018 at 6:19 p.m.). Spurs have scored a total of nine goals in their last three home games and they have scored at least two goals in seven of their last eight at Wembley. It should be enough to send the game over 2.5 goals you would imagine and in the bet35 correct score market a Tottenham 3-0 score is at 11/2* (Betting Odds taken on February 4th, 2018 at 5:19 p.m.).
Newport’s league form in the fourth tier is sliding a bit and they are starting to lose touch with the play off race. The Exiles played so well at Rodney Parade against Spurs but just couldn’t hang on in the end. That was the first-ever game between the two of them. The Exiles are now winless in their last four games (D2 L2) and they suffered a league loss out at Colchester on the weekend taking them to a W1 D1 L3 record in their last five games out on the road. So the task ahead of them becomes infinitely more difficult now as they head to Wembley to face one of the top sides in the country. Both teams, not to score at bet365 is at 4/7 odds* (Betting Odds taken on February 4th, 2018 at 5:19 p.m.) and really the chance of the Exiles getting through has diminished greatly. The winner of this replay will go out on the road to face the winner of the Millwall or Rochdale replay in the fifth round. The Exiles are a massive 14/1 poke* (Betting Odds taken on February 4th, 2018 at 5:19 p.m.) to qualify for that next round of FA Cup action.
Tottenham will probably breeze through this replay as they can’t be as bad as they were in that game in South Wales. Newport battled and worked so hard in that game and at least get a trip to Wembley enjoy. They’ll probably leave empty-handed, so back Spurs to win to nil.
