Few would have seen this run from Madagascar coming. They have lit the tournament up by reaching the quarter-finals. Not bad for a nation in their first-ever AFCON campaign and one that was ranked 107th in the world at the start of the event. They pulled off a shock group win too. They posted a W2 D1 record in their three games in the group stage, coming up big in their final match, a decider for top sport against Nigeria. That was following the draw against Guinea and then a 1-0 win over Burundi.
That was fantastic from them and it gave them a round of sixteen tie against DR Congo. That was a favourable draw for them as the DR Congo had only qualified as one of the best third-placed teams from the group stage. The game ended in a 2-2 draw but Madagascar impressively held their never to win the penalty shootout 4-2. The top scorer for the Barea is Carolus Andriamatsinoro with two. Madagascar are actually only W2 D3 L4 in their last nine games, which is why this run has been so unexpected.
The only previous meeting were in the World Cup 2002 qualifiers
Tunisia won both of those games to nil
It has been a strange tournament from Tunisia, who once again drew a game. They were up against Ghana in the round of sixteen and they looked to be heading to a win. That was until they conceded to the Black Stars in the 92nd minute. So they had to endure a penalty shoot-out in the end, which Tunisia took 5-4. Back in the group stage, Tunisia took a second-place finish behind winner Mali, and the Tunisians drew all three of their games, two of the 1-1 draws. So three of their four games at the tournament have been 1-1 draws (90 minutes).
So the 2004 champions have been grinding. They have actually only suffered three defeats since the end of the World Cup last summer. They are W7 D4 L3 in their last fourteen fixtures played. They are currently on a seven-match undefeated streak of form, drawing each of the last four as mentioned. This failure to have won games is going to likely bother punters as to whether or not they can actually find their winning touch when it matters the most. So far it has not quite been there, and there could be nervy moments in this one for them.
Madagascar are not going to be quaking in their boots at the prospect of facing Tunisia. The Tunisians are the favourites though but they can’t seem to get that winning touch nailed. So it may just be worth having the Madagascar – Draw Double Chance in mind.
