League One / Two Betting

Sunderland v Portsmouth League One Preview, 17th August 12.30pm

This game is the biggest fixture of the League One action on the weekend. It features two of the teams who failed in the division’s playoffs at the end of the last campaign. They actually met five times last season with the Black Cats having the better of those clashes. Sunderland are looking for their first win of this campaign. Read our Sunderland v Portsmouth betting tips for more.

Portsmouth 2/1
Draw 12/5

Sunderland News and Form

It has been back to back drawn games by Sunderland in League One this season. They opened at home with a 1-1 draw against Oxford before playing out the same scoreline at Ipswich last weekend. So it has not been the most convincing of stars from the Black Cats. They were fifth-place finishers in the league last season picking up a W12 D10 L1 record on home soil. Sunderland struggled a bit towards the end of the season.

There was just the one win in their last seven league games last season (D3 L3) so add on the two missed chances from this campaign and that is one win in nine league games. On home soil, last season all but three of Sunderland’s home successes were against teams who finished in the bottom half of the table. Eight of their ten home draws were by a 1-1 scoreline, which has again been prominent for them this season. Sunderland took a clean sheet in a quarter of home games last season.

Sunderland v Portsmouth Head to Head

The Black Cats beat Pompey in last season’s League One Play-Offs
Four of the last six meetings have gone under 2.5 goals
Portsmouth are winless in three trips to the Stadium of Light
Five of the last eight meetings in all competitions have been drawn

Portsmouth News and Form

Pompey finished one place above the Black Cats last season in the standings but then lost 1-0 on aggregate to them in the playoff semi-finals. Their record away from home was pretty strong at W13 D6 L4. That is one more win than what they managed at home actually. Pompey went undefeated in their final five away games of the campaign, winning four of those. This season they have gotten themselves up and running with a win.

Portsmouth lost on the opening weekend of the new season, suffering a 1-0 loss at Shrewsbury. But then they set the record straight last weekend with a 2-0 success over Tranmere. That away defeat at the Shrews will probably be hanging heavily on their minds as they go into one of their toughest away games of the season. Portsmouth are the 4/1 outright favourites to earn promotion from League One this season, one mark ahead of Sunderland* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 15th, 2019 at 8:15 p.m.).

Sunderland v Portsmouth Tips & Odds

Under 1.5 goals at 7/4

Who will win – Sunderland v Portsmouth Predictions

There is probably going to be another tight duel between the two of these. They look two of the strongest sides in the division and that’s why this match gets top billing. The draw in the match outright really doesn’t look that unreasonable of an option.

Tranmere v Rochdale Prediction & Betting Tips, 3rd August 2019

League One / Two Betting

Tranmere v Rochdale League One Preview, 3rd August 3.00pm

Tranmere come up a tier after winning the League Two Play-Offs last season. They get home comforts for their opener up in League One on the weekend. They play host to Rochdale who looked doomed for relegation at one point in League One last season. But a strong finish from them kept them afloat. Read our Tranmere v Rochdale betting tips for more.

Tranmere v Rochdale Betting Odds*

Tranmere 21/20
Rochdale 5/2
Draw 12/5
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 30th, 2019 at 9:15 p.m.)

Tranmere News and Form

Tranmere finished sixth in League Two last season, six points adrift of the autonomic play off places. The Super Whites struggled at the end of the season after they had had a seven-match winning streak bust. Following that Rovers won just one of their final seven league games (D3 L3). But it all came right for them in the playoffs where Micky Mellons Men won their semi final against Forest Green 2-1 on aggregate, before taking down Newport County in the final after extra time.

At Prenton Park in League Two last season Tranmere posted a W14 D5 L4 record, the backbone of their promotion push. They were defensively sound on Merseyside as well conceding just an average of 0.57 goals per home fixture and earning a clean sheet in 52% of their home games. The more that they can tap into those strengths in the higher tier, the better off they are going to be. Eight of their fourteen home wins last season were by a one-goal margin.

Tranmere v Rochdale Head to Head

This will be the first meeting since the 2012 season
The record is W1 D2 L1 for each in the four previous League One meetings
Both teams have scored in four of the last six meetings
Rochdale’s last win at Tranmere was in 1973

Rochdale News and Form

The Dale looked in heaps of trouble at the start of the match. They had lost nine of eleven games (W1 D1) in a poor sequence in the division and relegation looked to be a realistic probability for them. But then the Spotland crew managed to turn things around. They went on to post a W6 D2 L3 record in their final eleven games of the season to end up in 16th place at the end of the term, four points clear of the drop zone. Rochdale posted a W7 D5 L11 record on their travels, winning two of their final seven away games.

They finished the League One season with the worst defensive record in the entire division, having shipped 87 goals. The Dale conceded at over two goals per game on average away from home. After sacking Keith Hill in March, Rochdale appointed Brian Barry-Murphy as caretaker and then he was handed the job full time in April. Under him, Rochdale finished with a W6 D2 L3 record, the reason they stayed up.

Tranmere v Rochdale Tips & Odds

Draw match outright at 12/5
Under 2.5 goals at 4/5
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 30th, 2019 at 9:15 p.m.)

Who will win – Tranmere v Rochdale Predictions

An interesting fixture because of it being the first test up in the third tier for Tranmere. Rochdale struggled to pull things together last season until they showed some fight at the end of the campaign. There could be something in this for the home side at Prenton Park. Home win.

Sunderland v Oxford League One Preview, 3rd August 3.00pm

Sunderland are outright favourites to win League One this season. They almost earned their place back in the Championship for this season but lost the League One play off final back in May. Sunderland News and Form

It was a fifth-place finish that the Mackems took in the division last season. They let a lot of points slip in home drawn games. Their record on home soil was W12 D10 L1 for the season. They looked to be heading to an unbeaten season at the Stadium of Light before Coventry beat them there in mid-April 5-4. The Sky Blues were the only visitors to win there last season. Sunderland managed just one win in their last seven games last season so they did tail off.

After beating Portsmouth in the playoff semi-final, they lost the final against Charlton. The Black Cats scored in every home game played last season in the division at an average of two per game. 74% of their home games saw both teams score. Sunderland managed to score 59% of their home goals in the first half of matches. Manager Jack Ross has seen his side go W1 D1 L2 in their pre-season friendly matches.

Sunderland v Oxford Head to Head

There were two 1-1 draws between these two last season
Each of the last three meetings have been drawn
Sunderland are unbeaten in three home games against Oxford
Sunderland are W16 D8 L7 against Oxford overall

Oxford News and Form

The U’s only won four times on their travels last season in League One, part of an overall W4 D11 L8 record that they managed. They ended up in mid-table but they got things together really well down the back stretch of the season. They won eight of their final thirteen games last term, including three of their last four on the road. So they did stabilize themselves pretty well. In total Oxford averaged 1.04 goals per away game last season, but conceded at an average rate of 1.6 per game.

In total, they claimed a clean sheet in 30% of their away games. Three of their four away wins were by one goal margin, while six of their eight away defeats happened by a margin of at least two goals. The U’s scored 71% of their away goals in the second half of fixtures and opened the scoring just six times. Oxford had a really busy pre-season playing nine games, winning just three.

Sunderland v Oxford Tips & Odds

Sunderland 1-0 correct score at 11/2
Under 2.5 goals at 19/20
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 30th, 2019 at 9:15 p.m.)

Who will win – Sunderland v Oxford Predictions

Sunderland were a major force on home soil last season and they should be able to get their new season up and running positively. Oxford have some major improvements to do to their away form from last season. The Black Cats just have more resources to throw at this and they are the favourites in the division for the title. A home win to nil appeals.

Shrewsbury finished in the bottom seven in League One last season, not the greatest of efforts for them. They were much better on home soil than on the road though. Shrewsbury News and Form

It was a W8 D9 L6 record that Shrewsbury produced on home soil last season. They only won twice at New Meadow after the turn of the new year. The Shrews have manager Sam Ricketts in charge after he received the job back at the start of December last year. They have won eight of the 32 games for which he has been in charge (all competitions). So a 25% win rate needs some improving upon.

Shrewsbury only managed an average of 1.09 goals per home game last season. Just 35% of fixtures at New Meadow went over 2.5 goals. In total, they bagged a clean sheet in 39% of their home fixtures. Of their eight wins the last term at the New Meadow, four were by one goal margin and the other four by a two-goal margin. Salop only managed to net the first goal in 9 of their 23 home fixtures.

Shrewsbury v Portsmouth Head to Head

Portsmouth earned four points against the Shrews last season
Both teams have scored in one of the last five meetings
The Shrews have won three of their last four home games against Pompey
None of the last five meetings have gone over 2.5 goals

Portsmouth News and Form

Pompey had a pretty decent run at promotion last season. They actually won one more game out on their travels than they managed at home. Their overall away record was W13 D6 L4. Apart from a sticky patch in January when they lost three on the bounce, they were very, very solid. They won seven of their last ten games of the season (home and away combined). Portsmouth scored an average of 1.8 goals per away game, but only collected a clean sheet in 17% of road fixtures. Of the thirteen away wins that they took, 10 of them were by one goal margin only. In a tremendous record, they were leading at the half time break in 12 of their 23 away games last season. Two-thirds of their away goals were conceded in the second half of games. Pompey are the 13/2 second-favourites to win League One this season* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 30th, 2019 at 9:15 p.m.).

Who will win – Shrewsbury v Portsmouth Predictions

We are going to lean on Pompey coming up with an away win in this opener. They were so good last season, they just could not get the job done in the play offs where they lost 1-0 on aggregate against Sunderland. They can kick things off with a bang and get three points at New Meadow.

Wycombe v Bolton Prediction & Betting Tips, 3rd August 2019

League One / Two Betting

Wycombe v Bolton League One Preview, 3rd August 3.00pm

Wycombe did not have the greatest of campaigns last season, only surviving the drop by three points. They will be hoping for a bit more substance this go around. They kick off at home as they welcome Bolton. The Trotters took another drop down the tiers after relegation from the Championship last season. Bolton start the new season with a 12-point deficit because of having gone into administration. Read our Wycombe v Bolton betting tips for more.

Wycombe 2/5
Draw 3/1
Bolton 9/1
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 30th, 2019 at 9:15 p.m.)

Wycombe News and Form

Wycombe posted a W10 D5 L8 record on home soil last season in League One. Things just went horribly wrong for them from the end of January. They went on a twelve match winless streak of form, winning just three of their final fifteen fixtures of the season. That was their first season back up in League One though after promotion, so at least they avoided the drop straight back down. Can they build something better this season?

The Chairboys have great managerial consistency going with Gareth Ainsworth still in charge after taking over back in 2012. Wycome scored an average of 1.2 goals per home game last season and less than half of their games at Adams Park made it over 2.5 goals. Wycombe have had a good pre-season and have their veteran options in the attack of Craig Mackail-Smith and Adebayo Akinfenwa. Of their ten home wins last season, nine of them were achieved by a one-goal margin.

Wycombe v Bolton Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two teams

Bolton News and Form

The Trotters could not hold on to their Championship status last season. They only won the eight fixtures across the course of the campaign, and their away record was W4 D4 L15. They finished second from bottom, with only Ipswich doing worse than they did. It was just miserable reading for Bolton fans all the way and they lost their final seven games of the season, failing to score in any of their last six. In total, home and away combined last season, Bolton managed an average of just 0.6 goals per game. They only earned a clean sheet in a total of 13% of their games. It has been some fall from them as they were playing in the UEFA Cup just over a decade ago.

Bolton lost their Premier League status in 2011 and dropped to the third tier in 2016. Phil Parkinson got them back up to the second tier, but that ended with another relegation. Parkinson is still in charge. They had major financial problems last season, including no club staff being paid for 20 weeks. They had friendly matches cancelled in July because players refused to pay. There was a danger that they were going to have this game suspended, but they managed to show the EFL evidence of financial viability this week. Because of their financial problems and falling into administration, they have been handed a 12-point deduction, along with the newly-promoted Bury.

Peterborough News and Form

This will be one of the higher-profile games from League One this weekend. Peterborough posted a W9 D7 L7 record at home in the division last season and they finished with a flourish at London Road. The Posh went W4 D1 in their final five home games of the season. They ended up falling short of the play offs by a point, realistically two because of a worse goal difference than sixth-placed Doncaster.

Darren Ferguson, who is in his third spell with the club, arrived back in January this year after a long stint with Doncaster. The Posh picked up a clean sheet in 22% of their home games and none of their nine home successes were by a margin of more than two goals. Peterborough opened the scoring in less than half of their home games.

Peterborough v Fleetwood Head to Head

Peterborough earned four points against Fleetwood last season
Fleetwood are winless in their last four against Boro
Boro have won three of their last four at home against Fleetwood
Both teams have scored in three of the last five meetings

Fleetwood News and Form

Fleetwood finished last season in eleventh place in the table. They didn’t have the greatest time of things out on the road. Their away record read W7 D4 L12. They ended the season losing five of their last six road fixtures. Home and away combined they limped to the end of the season winning just one of their last seven. Fleetwood scored an average of 1.09 goals per away game, the exact same rate at which they conceded.

In total they earned a clean sheet in 39% of road fixtures. Of their twelve defeats on their travels, eight of them were by one goal margin only. The Fishermen were level at the halftime break in 13 of their 23 away games in League One. Back in April last year, Joey Barton was given the managerial job. He is still there.

Home soil could likely be the difference market in this one. The Fishermen were not great on their travels last season and could have their hands full here. The Posh on paper look strong enough to go and get themselves three points, but it looks worth having a flutter on both teams to hit the back of the net.

Lincoln posted a W11 D10 L2 on home soil in League Two last season. They were just superb and sealed the division title, even though they claimed just two points in their last five games. They still finished six points clear at the top despite that. Less than half of their home games made it over 2.5 goals, the Imps taking a clean sheet in 22% of home fixtures. Both teams scored in 70% of Lincoln’s home games. Naturally, the challenges are going to get a bit stiffer for them this season as they step up a level.

Seven of their eleven homes wins records last season were by a margin of just the one goal. Danny Cowley, who has been manager since 2016 is still in place. He was there with brother Nicky when the Imps made that famous run to the FA Cup quarter-finals in the 2016/17 season. The season following that they lost the League Two playoffs. Stanley won just two games out on the road from the start of 2019. They did not manage to earn a clean sheet in any of their final 18 games of the season (home and away combined). Coventry News and Form

Coventry posted a W9 D7 L7 record at home last season in League One. They barely averaged over a goal per game on home turf and only 30% of their games at St Andrews (they ground share with Birmingham) made it over 2.5 goals. The Sky Blues had a big positive in their defensive output though because they conceded at under a goal per home game. Of the goals which they shipped at home, 75% were in the second half of fixtures. The Sky Blues were level at the half time break in 12 of their 23 home games. Of the nine wins that they secured on home soil seven of them were achieved by a one-goal margin. Mark Robins is still their manager having been appointed back at the start of March 2017. He just needs to get a bit more out of an attack.

Coventry v Southend Head to Head

The Sky Blues won both league meetings against Southend last season
Both teams have scored in two of the last five meetings
Four of the last six meetings have gone over 2.5 goals
Southend have lost one of their last four visits to Coventry

Southend News and Form

Southend had their struggles last season in the division. It really started going wrong for them around the end of October. They didn’t manage to win back to back games from there on out until the end of the season. At one point Southend put together a 14 match winless streak of form. Their overall away record was W6 D6 L11 for the season but they failed to win any of their last nine on the road. They didn’t earn a clean sheet in any of those nine either. Home and away combined Southend conceded in each of their last 18 games of the campaign. Four of their six away wins that they managed were by just a margin of one goal. Seven of their eleven away defeats happened by at least a two-goal margin. The Shrimpers averaged exactly one goal per away game last season.

Doncaster News and Form

Donny made it to the play offs last season in League One and that was largely down to some superb home form. The Yorkshire side went W13 D7 L3 at the Keepmoat last season and that got them a play off fixture against Charlton. In an absolutely thrilling semi final tie, Doncaster missed out in a penalty shootout after a 4-4 aggregate draw with the Addicks. Doncaster also had made it through to the fifth round of the FA Cup. They were prolific in front of goal at the Keepmoat, averaging just under two goals per home fixture.

65% of all their home league fixtures went over 2.5 goals. Considering that they also picked up a clean sheet in 43% of fixtures, it just showed how frequently that they were scoring. Almost a third of their home games did Doncaster win to nil. Of the 13 home victories that Rovers earned, only three of them were by a one-goal margin. They were also impressive in winning at the half time break in 10 of their home games last term. Former West Brom boss Darren Moore is in charge.

They finished in 13th place in the standings at the end of their campaign. Of their nine away defeats, two-thirds of them were by a margin of at least two goals. Their pre-sseason warm-ups haven’t been going all that well either, failing to win any of their final four played (D2 L2). Manager Steve Evans took over at the helm on June 1st, 2019.

They were slow out of the gates later term, losing four of their opening five games of the season. 61% of all league games at the Pirelli went over 2.5 goals.

Ipswich News and Form

It was rock bottom of the Championship where Ipswich finished last season. They won just five games across the course of the campaign, two of those were out on the road. Their overall road record read W2 D5 L16. Three of the five wins that they produced across the course of the season happened in 2019. So there was little joy anywhere at any time for them. Ipswich averaged just 0.6 goals per away game in the Championship last term, conceding at an average of exactly two per game. They failed to take a single away clean sheet. After installing Paul Lambert as boss last October, they have stuck with him to keep them going forward and to hopefully better things now that they have dropped a tier.

Who will win – Burton v Ipswich Predictions

The bookmakers are unsure of how to split these two up and we are having a similarly tough time of doing so. Ipswich have required major surgery, and therefore we have look towards the Brewers on home soil to come up with a spirited opening win. It may be a good chance for them to get a bit of early momentum started.
