Atletico Madrid v Getafe La Liga Preview, 18th August 9.00pm

It has been a big summer overhaul for Atletico Madrid. They received a huge chunk of money from Barcelona for Antoine Greizmann and they have spent it. Will they be able to close the gap on reigning champions Barca? Getafe had a great season, earning a fifth-place finish in La Liga. Read our Atletico Madrid v Getafe betting tips for more.

Atletico Madrid v Getafe Betting Odds*

Atletico Madrid 4/9
Draw 10/3
Getafe 7/1
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 15th, 2019 at 9:13 p.m.)

Atletico Madrid News and Form

Atletico had a big summer clear out. Antoine Greizmann to Barcelona, Lucas Hernandez to Bayern Munich and Rodri to Manchester City were all major departures. Diego Godin left on a free transfer to inter Milan as well. They, of course, had to spend to rebuild and in comes Joao Felix as their marquee signing, from Benfica.

They have gotten in cover for their defence with the likes of Mario Hermoso and Keiran Trippier, but the loss of Godin and Hernandez was huge. Atletico finished second in La Liga in the 2018/19 season, eleven points behind league winners Barcelona. That’s a lot of ground to make up. Atletico scored fewer goals than both Barcelona and Real Madrid last season.

They were excellent on home soil again, picking up a W15 D3 L1 record in the top flight in the last campaign. Their one home defeat came against their rivals Real Madrid. They took a 2-0 win over Getafe in the campaign at home. Atletico were defensively supreme last season, conceding just 10 home goals in the entire season. They took a clean sheet in 68% of their home games.

Atletico Madrid v Getafe Head to Head

Atleti have won their last four home games against Getafe 2-0
Both teams have scored in none of the last 15 meetings in all competitions
Altletico are on a 10 match winning streak over Getafe in the league, all to nil
Getafe haven’t beaten Atletico since 2011

Getafe News and Form

The head to head certainly does not favour Getafe in this fixture. They enjoyed a very good campaign last season, ending in fifth place. They were in contention for a top-four finish and therefore a place in the Champions League all the way until the final weekend of the season. Their success, however, was all built off a brilliant season on home soil. They scored just four victories in their league travels. Getafe’s away record was W4 D11 L4, which of course hints at massive resilience.

Their record against the top four last season though (home and away) was D2 L6. Getafe are a team built on defensive strengths more than attack. They conceded an average of 1.1 goals per away game and only took a clean sheet in 16% of away games. Just 32% of Getafe’s road games last season made it over 2.5 goals. No team who finished in the top seven scored fewer goals than Getafe. But they did finish the season with the joint best defensive record in the entire division.

Atletico Madrid v Getafe Tips & Odds

Under 1.5 goals at 2/1
Atletico to win to nil at 21/20
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 15th, 2019 at 9:13 p.m.)

Who will win – Atletico Madrid v Getafe Predictions

It is simply a matter of riding the trend of clean sheet wins for Atleti over Getafe. The new-look Atletico may take some time to sort themselves out competitively, while the visitors are just likely going to head to the Metropolitano to shut up shop. Home win to nil

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Prediction & Betting Tips, 16th August 2019

European Football Betting

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona La Liga Preview, 16th August 8.00pm

Barcelona begin their La Liga title defence on Friday night with an away trip to Athletic Bilbao. It has been a big summer of change at the Camp Nou in terms of personal. Bilbao managed to themselves a top-eight finish last season but missed out on the European places. Read our Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona betting tips for more.

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Betting Odds*

Barcelona 8/11
Draw 11/4
Athletic Bilbao 4/1
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 15th, 2019 at 8:15 p.m.)

Athletic Bilbao News and Form

It wasn’t a bad effort from Athletic Bilbao last season who finished eighth in La Liga. Their success was built on their home form. They posted a W9 D 8 L2 record, a fine home return in the last campaign. They went undefeated in their home fixtures against the seven teams who finished above them in the table (W2 D5). In that sequence, they played out a 0-0 draw against Barcelona (and they draw at the Nou Camp too last season).

Only 37% of Bilbao’s home games last season made it over 2.5 goals and just to highlight further how strong of a home side they were, they were unbeaten in their last fourteen home fixtures for the campaign. If they could have matched up with their away form they would have had a great shot at European action.

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Head to Head

The two league meetings were both drawn last season
Both teams have scored in just one for the last five clashed
Barcelona have not conceded in their last four four league games at Bilbao
Each of the last four meetings have ended under 2.5 goals

Barcelona News and Form

Barcelona went W11 D6 L2 last season out on the road. Interestingly both of the defeats which they suffered away from the Nou Camp happened at teams who finished in the bottom half of the table. The Catalans averaged just over two goals per away game last season built weren’t particularly watertight in defence as they averaged a goal per game exactly against them on their travels. They took a clean sheet in 42% of road games.

The links with a return move for Neymar from PSG persist. What they have done in the transfer market is add the brilliance of Frenkie de Jong in the middle of the party and have added Antoine Greizmann to their attacking ranks. Those have been big moves. Six of the eleven away wins that Barcelona collected last season in the top flight happened by a margin of at least two goals. Lionel Messi misses the start of the season through injury.

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Tips & Odds

Under 2.5 goals at even money
Barcelona to win to nil at 2/1
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 15th, 2019 at 8:15 p.m.)

Who will win – Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Predictions

Barcelona are likely going to get the win in this one, but they have been made to hard work hard in their recent trips to Bilbao. So that suggests that this perhaps may not be the big goal-fest. A comfortable home-opening win with a clean sheet would do for the visiting Catalans. Barcelona to win to nil.

Celta Vigo v Real Madrid Prediction & Betting Tips, 16th August 2019

European Football Betting

Celta Vigo v Real Madrid La Liga Preview, 16th August 4.00pm

After struggling through a poor season, Real Madrid will be hoping that things are a bit brighter for them this time around. They have been throwing cash around in the summer to try and rebuild. It was the third place finish that they took in the league last season, nineteen points behind champions Barcelona. Celta Vigo only just avoided relegation. Read our Celta Vigo v Real Madrid betting tips for more.

Celta Vigo v Real Madrid Betting Odds*

Real Madrid 3/5
Draw 126/5
Celta Vigo 4/1
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 15th, 2019 at 8:15 p.m.)

Celta Vigo News and Form

Celta Vigo had a battle to try and hold on to their top-flight status last season. They finished just one place above the drop zone. An end of season flourish of form helped to get them safe. The bulk of their problems came from a horrible time of things that they had on the road.

On home soil in La Liga they posted a W8 D5 L6 record for themselves. The notable thing about their results from their last home campaign was that they did beat the top two. Celta Vigo took 2-0 wins at home over both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. They returned goals pretty well at home, averaging 1.6 goals per home fixture.

Celta Vigo v Real Madrid Head to Head

Real Madrid won both league meetings last season
Celta Vigo are on a six-match winless streak against Real Madrid
Real Madrid have scored 12 goals in total in their last three against Celta Vigo
11 of the last 12 meetings have gone over 2.5 goals

Real Madrid News and Form

It was a season to forget then for Real Madrid who lost 12 league fixtures in the previous campaign. Away from home, they went W8 D4 L7. Something was going to be done over the summer. They were always going throw money at the problem and that is just what they have done, strengthening both attack and defence. There is a rumour that they are chasing Neymar as well.

Eden Hazard was their marquee signing but they have also added Rodrygo and Luka Jovic to their attacking ranks. Eden Hazard is the 9/2 second favourite in the first goalscorer market for this game, behind only new teammate Karim Benzema* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 15th, 2019 at 8:15 p.m.).

They have kept a hold of Gareth Bale who looked certain to be leaving at one point and they really should be delivering goals. The defence needs a lot of improvement from last season, as they conceded an average 1.6 goals per away game, taking a clean sheet in just 11% of road games. Real Madrid went D2 L3 in their last five away games of the 2018/19 campaign.

Celta Vigo v Real Madrid Tips & Odds

Over 3.5 goals at 4/6
Real Madrid to win to nil at 9/4
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 15th, 2019 at 8:15 p.m.)

Who will win – Celta Vigo v Real Madrid Predictions

Real Madrid needs a show of solidarity and strength in this one. They can’t afford to invite early pressure on themselves after such a big summer of spending. Given the recent head to head between these, Real Madrid look the sound wager in what could easily be a high scoring game.

Odds on the favourites for 2019/20 Big Five European Leagues

Manchester City

Across the big five European leagues, there were no surprises this season as to where the titles ended up. Each of the favourites from the divisions were all successful. Looking forward twelve months from now, will it just be the same again?

Premier League 2019/20 Winner Odds*

Manchester City 8/11, Liverpool 11/4
* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 8:54 pm on May 19th, 2019)

This season’s Premier League title race was an epic. Manchester City and Liverpool locked horns pretty much all the way, and it wasn’t until the start of the new year that Manchester City clawed their way back into ascendancy. That started with their home win over the Reds on January 3rd, a game which they had gone into, seven points adrift of the Reds.

At the end of the day, they held their nerve brilliantly, winning their final fourteen fixtures of the league season to secure the title on the final day of the season. Pep Guardiola’s men are 8/11 to make it three in a row season* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 8:54 pm on May 19th, 2019). After having had the door slammed in their face of trying to earn their first Premier League title, Liverpool have to pick themselves back up and try to find a way to crack this remarkable City team.

Bundesliga 2019/20 Winner Odds*

Bayern Munich 8/13, Borussia Dortmund 13/2
* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 8:54 pm on May 19th, 2019)

This is another of the big five leagues that went down to the wire. All of the early form of the season was made by Borussia Dortmund. They raced out of the blocks while Bayern Munich, under new boss Niko Kovac took some time to get going. But it was Bayern Munich who started turning up the heat really from the start of December when they won thirteen of four games in a red-hot period of games. The tipping point in their favour came at the start of April as they crushed title rivals Dortmund 5-0.

Dortmund, who had gone undefeated from the start of the campaign through to mid-December, couldn’t keep up their pace. At the end of the even though they won eight of their last twelve games, costly slips away from home cost them. The interesting thing about next season’s Bundesliga is that Bayern are losing Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, while Dortmund will see Christian Pulisic go to Chelsea and Jadon Sancho is being hotly tipped for a move away as well. Who will adapt better to the changes?

Serie A 2019/20 Winner Odds*

Juventus 4/7, Inter 5/1, Napoli 11/2
* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 8:54 pm on May 19th, 2019)

Once again Serie A was a non-contest. Juventus romped to their eighth straight league title. Change will be coming next season as Juve are parting company with Massimiliano Allegri. But will that be enough to see their dominance in the country dwindle? It doesn’t seem too likely. It is a really tough thing to imagine how other contenders like Napoli or Inter are going to close the gap enough on Juventus, regardless of whoever is in charge.

La Liga Premier 2019/20 Winner Odds*

Barcelona 10/11, Real Madrid 11/10, Atletico 33/1
* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 8:54 pm on May 19th, 2019)

The demise of Real Madrid this season has been somewhat spectacular. Just about everything went wrong for them. After winning the Champions League for the third straight season last summer, boss Zinedine Zidane walked away, noticing that the club was likely to go into decline. It did. They started the season with Julen Lopetegui.

He was sacked in October to be replaced by Santiago Solari, becoming the official coach the following month. He was out of the door in March with Zinedine Zidane coming back. They ended the season with three losses in four, finishing 19 points behind winners Barcelona and eight behind second-placed Atletico Madrid. So it was fairly routine at the end of the day for Barcelona, who grabbed the title again losing just three times all campaign.

Ligue 1 2019/20 Winner Odds*

PSG, Lille, Lyon (odds to be announced)

There was little challenge to PSG in the title race in Ligue 1 this season. Even though their form slumped badly towards the end of the season, they still won at a canter ahead of second-placed Lille. This is a more extreme example than Serie A is really, because the money and the power that the Parisians have over everyone else on the domestic front is unmatched and they aren’t likely going to be touched next campaign either.

Sevilla v Athletic Bilbao La Liga Preview, 18th May 3.15pm

Sevilla have to produce a win in their final game of the season as well as hoping that other results involving Valencia and Getafe go their way. That’s what they need to get themselves a top-four finish on the final weekend of the season. They take on Athletic Bilbao who have had a great season and would finish in sixth place at the expense of Sevilla if they bank the win, muscling their way into Europe next season. Sevilla 4/5

* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 15th, 2019 at 3:20 p.m.)

Sevilla News and Form

Sevilla played out a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid last weekend. That leaves them with only the one win in their last five league games (D1 L3). So their form has fallen away when they needed it the most to try and push for a top-four finish. There is a narrow window for them to get into the Champions League. The home form of Sevilla this season in La Liga is W11 D3 L4. They were on a good three-match winning streak at home before losing their last home fixture 3-0 against Leganes. Three of the four home losses which they have suffered these season have been against the five teams sitting above them in the table.

Sevilla have been good in front of goal averaging just over two goals per home game. In total 61% of their home fixtures have ended up over 2.5 goals. Of their eleven home wins, six of them have been by a margin of at least two goals. Sevilla have not seen a home draw in seven played now. Of the home goals which they have produced, 70% of them have been netted in the second period of fixtures. They have opened the scoring in 12 of their 18 home fixtures this season. With just one clean sheet in their last six (home and away) will their defence hold up?

Sevilla v Athletic Bilbao Head to Head

Athletic Bilbao claimed a 2-0 win over Sevilla in the league
Sevilla claimed a 3-2 aggregate win over Bilbao in the Copa del Rey
Both teams have scored in one of the last six meetings
Sevilla have won their last four home games in the league against Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao News and Form

Bilbao collected a 3-1 win over Celta Vigo last weekend which continued their patchy form. They are W4 D1 L3 in their last eight fixtures. Their overall away record has seen them pick up just the road wins all season (D6 L8) so that is really where they have fallen down badly. In their five away games played so far against teams in the top six, they have gone D1 L4. They have had their problems putting the ball in the back of the net, averaging just 0.8 goals per away game this season. If they win this, they beat Sevilla on the head to head between the two clubs to sneak sixth place.

Just 39% of their road games have made it over 2.5 goals. In total Bilbao have picked up a clean sheet in just 17% of their away games. All four of their away wins this season have been by a one-goal margin and they have lost by just the one goal margin in five of their eight road defeats. Athletic Bilbao have not been involved in an away draw in eight games now and they have scored 60% of their away goals in the first half of games. They have conceded 62% of their away goals after the half time break.

Sevilla v Athletic Bilbao Tips & Odds

Both teams to score at 4/5
Sevilla to win by a one-goal margin at 11/4
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 15th, 2019 at 3:20 p.m.)

Who will win – Sevilla v Athletic Bilbao Predictions

This should be a tense battle and there is not too much between them and there is not likely to be on the day. Bilbao just haven’t quite had the away form to suggest that they are going to go and get the win. The extra scoring threat of Sevilla may just get them the win. Home win.

Real Madrid News and Form

What changes are going to come at the Bernabeu over the summer? There is certainly plenty needed. Real Madrid lost 3-1 at Real Sociedad last weekend, leaving them at W1 L2 in their last three league games. They have won just one of their last four played now. It has been really dodgy, uninspiring stuff from them, although boss Zinedine Zidane has just been shuffling his starting eleven, having a look at players with a bit of planning towards next season.

Real Madrid are W13 D1 L4 on home soil this season in La Liga and they are in form at the Bernabeu. They have won their last five league games there, so it’s really only their away form which had taken recently. Real Madrid have netted at least two goals in each of their last five home games in the top flight as well. This season, Los Merengues have taken a clean sheet in 56% of their home fixtures and 8 of their 13 home successes have been by a margin of at least two goals.

Real Madrid v Real Betis Head to Head

Madrid earned a 2-1 win at Betis earlier this season
Real Madrid have won four of the last five league meetings (L1)
Real Betis took a 1-0 win in this corresponding fixture last season
Four of the last five meetings have made it over 2.5 goals

Real Betis News and Form

Real Betis bagged a win over Huesca last weekend. That snapped a five-match undefeated streak of form that they had been on (D1 L4). Their overall away record for the season is W5 D3 L10 and they have had a poor return from their recent top flight travels. Betis are currently on a four-match losing streak away from home in La Liga, going winless in five. Over the course of the entire season, they have averaged under a goal per road game.

Three of the five wins that they have taken this season away from home have been against sides currently in the bottom five. But then there was their huge 4-3 upset at Barcelona which no-one saw coming. Of their ten road losses for the season, seven of them have been by a margin of exactly one goal. Real Betis have not managed to take a clean sheet in any of their last ten league games and in none of their last five on the road. Real Betis have conceded 76% of their away goals in the second period of fixtures.

Valladolid News and Form

Valladolid have won their last two league games and three of their last four (L1). So they are in good shape and that has eased them away from the drop zone. Their home form for the season is W5 D5 L8. They are undefeated in their last three on home soil, winning their last two there. So while all of that is great, four of their five home wins have been against sides in the bottom six. Valladolid have averaged under a goal per game at home this season.

Just 33% of their home games this season have made it over 2.5 goals, Valladolid taking a clean sheet in 28% of their home fixtures. All ten of the wins that Valladolid have taken in the league this season have been by a margin of exactly one goal. Their last two home wins have been by a 1-0 scoreline. Valencia News and Form

Valencia have won their last two league games, scoring nine goals in total in successes over Huesca and Alaves. Their overall away record for the season in La Liga is W7 D6 L5. They have had a mixed bag of fortunes recently on their travels, winning two and losing two. However, Valencia have won four of their last six road games (L2). In total, they have scored an average of 1.4 goals per away game this season and they are on a three-match scoring streak on their travels.

They have been having their problems at the back though, Valencia conceding in each of their last eight games. Valencia have produced 64% of their away goals in the first period of fixtures and they have opened the scoring in over half of their away fixtures. Only the top three in the league have produced better away records than what Valencia have done. They also boast the fourth-best defensive record in La Liga too. Real Madrid News and Form

There was a another disappointing result for real Madrid last weekend, as they lost 1-0 at relegation-threatened Rayo Vallecano. That is just a W1 D2 L1 record now that Madrid have taken in their last four league games. They have failed to hit the back of the net in their last two now. But their maladies have been away from home and they do actually have a bit of home league form behind them at the moment. Los Merengues are on a four-match winning streak on home soil, scoring at least two goals in each of those four success.

This is their penultimate home fixture of the season. In total Real Madrid have earned a clean sheet in 59% of home games this season, while they have scored at an average of 1.7 goals per home game. Just 41% of league fixtures at the Bernabeu this season have gone over 2.5 goals. Villarreal have done well lately to pull themselves clear of relegation concerns. They are not mathematically safe though but have a five-point cushion with three games to play. So they are likely to stay up. Their current form is good at W3 D1 in their last four played and each of the wins in that sequence by a one-goal margin. Two of those three were away from home too. That moved their away record for the season on to W5 D5 L7 and they have averaged exactly a goal per road game this season.

They have been a thorn in Real Madrid’s side recently, so it will be interesting to see if they can keep them at bay again. Villarreal have actually taken a clean sheet in 47% of their away games this season. The negative for them is that they have failed to score in any of their four away games this season against top six sides (D1 L3). Villarreal have been level at the half time break in 10 of their away games. Home and away combined, they have netted in each of their last ten league games, and in each of their last five on the road. They have shipped 67% of their away goals in the second period of fixtures.

Who will win – Real Madrid v Villarreal Predictions

Villarreal can be a stubborn side and given the problems that Real Madrid have had lately, are likely to keep this tight. They have a bit of head to head form going at the Los Merengues and the double chance on the visitors isn’t a bad option for this one.

Rayo Vallecano News and Form

Rayo Vallecano are bottom of the league but they are not mathematically relegated just yet. Given their lack of form, that is still likely to happen though. They do have a bit of home form going though with a W1 D2 record in their last three home fixtures, and the win in that sequence was over top-six side Valencia. That pushed their home form to W4 D6 L7 for the season. They have, however, lost all four of their home games played this term against current top five sides. Rayo Vallecano did hit the back of the net in three of those four games though.

In total, they have averaged 1.35 goals per home game this season, with 59% of their home fixtures going over 2.5 goals. Both teams have scored in 71% of their home fixtures. Rayo Vallecano have taken just the one win in their last seven home league fixtures now and have only managed a clean sheet in 18% of home games. Of their thirteen home defeats this season, eight of them have been by a one-goal margin. Rayo Vallecano started the weekend of action eight points away from safety with twelve to play for. It’s a very small window of opportunity for them. Tough games like this are not going to help them out.

Rayo Vallecano v Real Madrid Head to Head

Real Madrid are on a 14 match winning streak over Rayo Vallecano
Rayo Vallecano have only ever won three games against Madrid
Five of the last seven meetings have gone over 2.5 goals

Real Madrid News and Form

Real Madrid were frustrated by neighbours Getafe in a 0-0 draw in midweek. To be fair Getafe are up in the top four, pushing for a Champions League place next season. In their last five league games, Real Madrid are W2 D2 L1 now and they have slumped out of form on their travels. They have failed to win any of their last three league away games now (D2 L1). Their overall away record for the season is W8 D4 L5 and there have already been signs that Zinedine Zidane is looking towards next season in terms of selection.

They are probably going to be taking on a very different look next term, with a big war chest of transfer funds available. Real Madrid have averaged 1.76 goals away from home this season. Interestingly each of their last eight league goals, home and away have been scored by Karim Benzema. No-one else is helping out at all. They have been a defensive mess for most of the season, conceding an average of 1.6 per road game. 71% of their away games have gone over 2.5 goals and Real Madrid have earned a clean sheet in just 12% of road fixtures. There has just been nothing spectacular from them and started the weekend six points adrift of second-placed Atletico.

Rayo Vallecano v Real Madrid Tips & Odds

Real Madrid to win to nil at 15/8

Who will win – Rayo Vallecano v Real Madrid Predictions

It’s a hard game to read with Real Madrid not in great away form and Rayo Vallecano fighting for survival. The safest option looks to be a narrow away win for Los Merengues given the current standing of the two sides in the table.
