The winner of this tie will go and make a trip to non-League side Maldon & Tiptree in the second round of this season’s FA Cup. So both will be recognising a huge opportunity to make it through to the third round eventually. It was a 1-1 draw in Cleethorpes in the first meeting. Who will settle this? Neither of these League Two sides have much form going on. Newport have taken one win in their last five games in all competitions (D2 L2). That was a home win though in league action against Scunthorpe. Newport haven’t done badly at Rodney Parade lately having posted a W2 D2 L1 record there in their last five. They have only lost twice on home soil this season, once in the EFL Cup against West Ham and then against Salford in league action at the start of November.
Just once in their last six home fixtures have Newport managed to score more than one goal in a game. They are without a clean sheet in three there. The Exiles had a very good time of things at home last season’s FA Cup, beating Welsh rivals Wrexham, Premier League side Leicester and then Championship side Middlesbrough before bowing out against Man City.
Newport have won three of their last four home games against Grimsby 1-0 (D1)
Both teams have scored in two of the last eleven meetings
Five of the last eight meetings have ended in a home win
Grimsby have won one of the last six meetings
The Mariners had quite a bright start to the new season, but that has since fallen away when troubles hit around the start of September. Grimsby have failed to get a win in any of their last five games now, losing three of those. They have managed just two victories in their last 12 games across all competitions. They did almost get across the line in this FA Cup tie, however, having taken the lead at Blundell Park just before half time.
They conceded an equalizing penalty 10 minutes from time. Grimsby have lost four of their last five away games played in the FA Cup, and each of those defeats were by a 1-0 scoreline. They have lost three of their last four trips to Newport by a 1-0 scoreline as well (0-0). Grimsby have failed to score in five of their last nine road games in the FA Cup.
The trend of 1-0 scorelines has to pique some big interest in this FA Cup tie. Newport shaded things in terms of performance in the first go at this FA Cup tie. Grimsby may well kick themselves having failed to hold on at home. Newport to win.

Morecambe were down at the wrong end of the table for most of last season and will be hoping for a bit more cheer this time around. They start at home for the new campaign by welcoming Grimsby. The Mariners finished one place above the Shrimps, two points clear of them. Read our Morecambe v Grimsby betting tips for more.
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 31st, 2019 at 5:42 p.m.)
It was a home record for W8 D5 L10 that the Shrimps recorded in League Two last season. So it was all pretty average from them. They did finish the season with a home flourish through as they were W4 D2 in their last six home games of the campaign. So they can look back to that for a bit of positive drive to build on. Morecambe produced an average of 1.4 goals per home game last season and only managed to claim a clean sheet in 22% of home fixtures. Five of the eight wins that they get on the board the Shrimps did not concede in. Half of their eight home successes were by a one-goal margin.
Grimsby are winless in their last five against Morecambe
Morecambe are W6 D7 L3 in the head to head against Grimsby
Grimsby have lost two f the last three against the Shrimpers
Eight of the last nine meetings have gone under 2.5 goals
Grimsby then only finished two points ahead of Morecambe down in the bottom half of the trouble. They were not good out on their travels as they only took five wins. The overall road record ended up at W5 D4 L14. Grimsby didn’t beat anyone who finished inside the top eight last season, away from home. The Mariners averaged under a goal per away game, shipping at a rate of 1.5 per game on average. They only managed to take a clean sheet in 13% of their away games. Grimsby failed to get a clean sheet in any of their last eleven away fixtures. Nine of the fourteen losses which they suffered on their travels happened by just one goal margin.
We are leaning towards a draw in this game. It looks pretty difficult to separate the two of them, as it was last season. Morecambe are probably good enough to defend home soil, but it remains questionable as to whether or not they can actually get a win on the board. Draw.

Forest Green 4/5
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on January 20th, 2019 at 6:38 p.m.)

They have produced only 11 away goals this season, averaging over a goal per game against
Only 36% of their away games have made it over 2.5 goals
Grimsby had won back-to-back away games over Port Vale and Exeter before that loss at Lincoln
Six of their eight away defeats this season have been by a one-goal margin only
67% of the goals they have conceded away from home have been in the second period of games
Forest Green to take the home win is the pick here for this midweek game. Their loss against the strong Bury doesn’t spark a need to hit the panic button. Rovers can respond with a strong home victory.

Chesterfield v Grimsby FA Cup 2nd Round Preview, 2nd December 2.00pm
National league side Chesterfield get a good home cup tie on Sunday as they play League Two side Grimsby. The two of them were actually together in the fourth tier last season but the Spireites tumbled into relegation. Can they pull off an upset and put themselves through to the third round? Read our Chesterfield v Grimsby betting tips for more.
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on November 30th, 2018 at 3:17 p.m.)
Following their relegation to the realms of non-league from League Two last season, things haven’t gone well for Chesterfield’s ambitions of getting back up. They are actually sat in the relegation zone at the moment in the National league with such a strange season of results behind them. They won their first three games of the season and then went on run of ten games where they picked up just two points (D2 L8). Then they draw their following eight games in all competitions. Yes, eight draws in a row.
The Spireites are W1 D10 in their last eleven games in all competitions, and really the only positive that can be taken from that is that they have been hard to beat. Of the ten draws in what sequence of games, all but two of them were. A 1-1 correct score option is at 5/1 odds* (betting odds taken on November 30th, 2018 at 6:24 pm). In that run of eleven games, the only win that Chesterfield got under their belt was a victory against Billericay in the replay of their FA Cup first round tie. Tom Denton got a hattrick in the game for the Spireites. Their best ever FA Cup run can in 1997 when they reached the semi-finals.
Grimsby won at the Proact Stadium last year in the league 3-1
Grimsby are unbeaten in three against Chesterfield W2 D1
The Mariners have scored two goals in three for their last four against the Spireites
Chesterfield are W2 L1 in their last three home games against Grimsby
Grimsby are having a pretty tough time of things up in League Two. Well, they were but to be fair they have been doing much better lately. They have gone W3 D2 L1 in their last six games in all competitions. A lot of their struggles this season came down to struggling to put the ball in the back of the net. But they have improved that lately and have scored seven in their last two. So that is something positive that they can take into this FA Cup tie. Both teams to score is at 3/4 odds* (betting odds taken on November 30th, 2018 at 6:24 pm).
However, while there have been more positives from them, they are still having huge problems on the road. They are just W1 D1 L6 in their eight games away from home in all competitions (not including the Football League Trophy). The Mariners have conceded exactly two goals in four of their last five road games. Nothing about this looks to be a comfort for the Mariners really even though they are the higher ranked side. They are still down in the bottom half of the League Two table. Is their recent momentum going to be enough to help them get through this challenge?
Things do seem to point to a draw cropping up in this one. Chesterfield have that large chunk of recent drawn games, and Bilericay held them to one in the last round. Grimsby have just had a miserable time of things on the road this season, but with improved recent output, can get this back to home soil.

This is the Football Conference Play Off Final. A place in League Two awaits the victors and it is Rovers who are running as favourites to move up. A high stakes game at Wembley and Rovers are the ones with the head to head form in recent meetings. But things were pretty tight between them in the Conference this season, ti could mean a long afternoon in the capital for these. Rovers are running at a price of 13/10 for the win, with Grimsby at 2/1 and the Draw at 12/5 (90 mins).
There was nothing much between these two in the regular season, so over the 90 minutes, it could be worth looking at Bet365’s 0-0 Bore Draw Insurance. Place a pre-match correct score, scorecast or half time/full time wager on the game and if your bet ends up losing because the game ends goalless, then Bet365 will refund your lost stake as a free bet! New customers can take advantage of a great welcome bonus which rewards with up to a £200 free bet!
The Pirates have only lost one of their last six played against Grimsby in all competitions. They took a 1-0 away win at Grimsby during the regular season after they were held to a 0-0 draw in the west country. Four of the last five meetings between the pair of them have gone under 2.5 goals, so look for that to happen again. You can back this one to go under 2.5 goals at a price of 8/13 with online betting site Bet365. Rovers scored home and away in their 3-0 aggregate win over Forest Green Rovers in the play off semi finals, and they also banged in 18 goals in their last six league matches in the regular season.
That’s some power and Rovers have top scorer Matty Taylor and teammate Ellis Harrison running at joint 13/8 favouritism in the anytime goalscorer market. With their back to back wins over Forest Green Rovers, the Pirates have now lost just one of their last 23 games played in all competitions, winning sixteen of those. That’s some pretty strong form, but they will still have to watch their backs because the Mariners have scored in 14 of their last 15 fixtures. But generally, recent meetings between these have been pretty tight and with the occasion, so don’t expect a goal fest.
Grimsby were comfortable in their Conference play off semi final, where they beat Eastleigh 5-1 on aggregate, setting themselves up well with a 2-1 away win in the first leg. However, they have struggled against Rovers already this season, failing to net against the Pirates in their two league meetings. Grimsby have lost just one of their last fifteen played in all competitions, with eleven wins during that sequence, so you have two very confidence sides in this one. Lenell John-Lewis is trading at a quote of 2/1 in the anytime goalscorer market for the Mariners.
It is likely to be tight and not too many quarters given here. Both are in decent scoring form, so expect defences to be heightened and switched on. Wouldn’t be a big surprise if this was level at 90 minutes nor if then a winner is produced with just a one goal margin. Rovers do have the extra firepower up front and that may just tip the balance.

The Football Conference play offs look as if they are going to be really tight affairs. The winner of this tie will face either Forest Green Rovers or Bristol Rovers in the play off final. A place in League Two awaits the victors of that. In the regular season standings, it was Grimsby who took third place, four points ahead of Eastleigh, directly beneath them. Eastleigh are 13/8 to take a home win, with Grimsby at 8/5 and the draw at 9/4.
Big occasion and it is likely to be a tight battle. Take advantage of Bet365’s 0-0 Bore Draw Insurance. Place a pre-match correct score, scorecast or half time/full time bet and if the game ends in a 0-0 draw then the bookmaker will refund lost stakes as a free bets in those markets. New customers can get up to a free £200 bet when registering and also enjoy Bet365 great new partial cash-out feature.
Eastleigh certainly finished the regular season with a bang, winning their last five games on the bounce. They scored at least two goals in each of those last five games as well, and if you look back to their last nine wins in the Conference, they scored two or more goals in each of those as well. Only Conference winners Barnet scored more goals in the division this season than Eastleigh managed. That is however, only half of the story for Eastleigh, because at the back they were pretty wide open, shipping a total of 61 goals, the highest amount conceded of any team that finished in the Conference’s top nine.
Their home form at the end wasn’t all that great, it has to be said. They won their last two there (conceding in each) and those were part of a W2 D1 L2 in their last five at home. They only won four of their last twelve played on home soil, so they are better team on the road and that could mean the tie is blown wide open on the return to Grimsby. James Constable was their top scorer for the season with 18 goals, and he is running at a price of 7/4 favourite in the anytime goalscorer market with online bookmaker Bet365. The two meetings in the Conference this season though were both won by Grimsby.
The Mariners have a far superior defence to that of Eastleigh and if this come down to a tight battle, then that could be quite telling in the push for League Two. They are the ones with the head to head form this season and they put together a tremendous stretch of form at the end of the season, losing just one of their last thirteen and winning nine of those. They are unbeaten in their last seven away games, and have lost one of their last nineteen on the road only. They suffered just three away defeats all season. So they have the strength, clearly and they have banked clean sheet wins in three of their last four on the road. If they get their noses in front here, Eastleigh will become more vulnerable the more they open up.
The defence of Eastleigh is probably the red flag in this one. Grimsby have been tremendously efficient on the road this season and the Mariners are more than capable of grabbing another narrow win as they did earlier in the season. There’s enough to push for an outright away win here.
