Italy have been rewarded with a favourable tie in the round of 16 at the women’s World Cup. After topping their group they will be looking to make quarter-finals with a strong performance against China. China was one of the best third-placed teams to qualify from the first round of action. It has been quite the campaign from Italy at the 2019 women’s World Cup. After opening with a 2-1 success over Australia, they followed that up with a 5-0 thrashing of Jamaica. Italy have had two different players score a hat-trick at these world cup finals so far. They could not make it three wins from three in the group stage though, as despite largely dominating against Brazil in their final fixture, the Italians suffered a 1-0 defeat. That was after giving away a penalty kick late on in the game which the Brazilians converted. Still, that is four wins in their last five games now from the Italians who are clearly one of the best emerging sides around.
Italy have scored at least two goals in each of their last four successes. They will be looking to tighten up just a little bit at the back because they have managed to claim only the one clean sheet in their last five games, which was from their victory over Jamaica. Considering that Italy had won just two of their previous six World Cup matches, but are now standing on the brink of a quarter-final, it shows how far they have come. They have played some of the best fluent attacking football from all teams at the tournament so far. Will they hold their nerve now?
China managed to get out of their group, and a difficult group it was, despite only winning one of their games. They opened with a 1-0 reverse against Germany, but then they managed to dig out a win over South Africa by the same scoreline. That left them going into their final group stage match against Spain knowing that a draw was going to put them through to the next round as one of the best third-place finishers. Not too surprisingly that fixture ended up in a 0-0 draw which suited the Spaniards perfectly fine as well.
You have to take a bigger look at China’s form and it does not make for good reading. They are W1 D2 L4 in their last seven fixtures. In that sequence of games, they have failed to score in three of them. The really notable thing about all of those defeats was that they were against some of the stronger European sides like France and Norway. So will they come up short against more European opposition? China’s win over South Africa is their only victory in a World Cup fixture in their last four played. Four years ago they met Cameroon at this stage and produced a 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals. Can they cause an upset?
The Italians have looked really good at the World Cup so far and they should have enough to take out a very limited China team. There is not likely to be a huge attacking threat coming from the Asian nation, so Italy to win to nil is a solid proposition.

Spain are likely to land themselves in the next round of competition. A point out of this fixture will guarantee that they get one of the top two spots in Group B. China are right there level on points with them though and because of goal difference, they have to come up with a win to beat the Spaniards to second. China lost their opening game 1-0 against Germany, but then come up with a response in taking a 1-0 win over South Africa. So they are in the hunt for a qualification spot to the next round. They may even think about getting a point and trying to get one of the third best finisher spots. So it will be interesting to see how they approach this. They will have seen how well the Spaniards have played so far and you wouldn’t blame them for trying to shut up shop. Basically if this turns into an open game, China aren’t going to have a chance.
They were on a five-match losing streak (including a penalty shootout loss again the Netherlands at the Algarve Cup) before taking their 1-0 win over South Africa. It is notable that all of those defeats were against some of the stronger European teams. China are W 4 D1 L4 in their last nine World Cup games. Seven of those nine have all been 1-0 score lines as well, China winning three of those against the Netherlands, Cameroon and South Africa. Back at the 2015 World Cup, China did actually make it to the quarter finals where they were stopped by the USA, yes, by a 1-0 scoreline. So they may be able to keep it tight, but can they find the winning touch that they need if they want to push for a top-two finish?
Spain were absolutely brilliant in their second group stage game against Germany. They totally ran the show and kept the Germans on the back foot. The only thing missing from their performance was a goal though as the Germans did a smash and grab job on them. Still, Spain are pretty well positioned after taking a 3-1 opening win over South Africa. They have goal difference advantage of China in the group and so only need to draw this game.
But given how positive that they have been in the competition so far, they should go on and win this game. That defeat against Germany snapped a four-match undefeated streak of form that the Spaniards were on (W2 L2). They have some very good players in there and they are quite a young side. Everything centres around Jennifer Hermoso though and they need her in the game as much as possible. Spain are actually just W1 D1 L3 in their last five World Cup games. So it’s not a great history at the tournament that they have. But they can write a positive chapter here.
China are not likely to have enough to hurt Spain. The Spaniards were so good on the ball against Germany and easily deserved a point out of that fixture. They can get over that disappointment with a win in this one. Spain to win to nil.

There was a loss for both of these in their opening games of the competition. So this will represent the best chance for both of these at getting something on the board. This is action from the group that contains Spain and Germany. Whoever wins could be on target to claim one of the best third-placed finishes. South Africa, one of the big outsiders for the title in France, made a decent game of things in their opener against Spain. They actually took a first-half lead and were still ahead with twenty minutes to go. But then two penalty kicks went against them, which the Spaniards converted before Spain got a third just before the final whistle. So now South Africa have to pick themselves up from that 3-1 defeat.
But that is not going to be easy as they are not a team in any kind of form. They have lost five of their last six games (D1). The one draw in there was again Jamaica. To be fair, they met both the USA and Norway before the World Cup, which was tough opposition to put themselves against. South Africa played at the Cyprus Women’s Cup earlier this year and posted a D1 L3 record there from games against Finland, North Korea, the Czech Republic.
China suffered a 1-0 loss in their tournament opener against Germany. They were expected to come in for a heavier loss than that. But Germany were pretty flat in the game and didn’t tear the Chinese to pieces. But China deserves some credit for their performance in the fixture and it was an indication of how hard they can be to beat. The defeat against Germany was their fifth in a row.
But in that sequence, they only suffered one-goal margins against Denmark and China, and played out a draw with European champions the Netherlands. So they haven’t been walked over at all. They do look to be the tougher of the two teams who are going to be on show in this one. China are ranked 16th in the world at the moment with South Africa at 49th. Four years ago, China finished second behind Canada in their World Cup group.
China should be able to get the win on the board in this one. They look the stronger of the two nations and they are not too likely to give too much away at the back. That is going to give them a great platform on which to build to potentially go and get the three points. China to win.
