Porto News and Form

Porto have a big hill to climb in this game now back on home soil as they are trailing 2-0. In last season’s round of sixteen in the Champions League, Porto faced Liverpool and they lost 5-0 on home soil on that occasion. Porto are now on a D3 L4 record in their seven previous fixtures against Liverpool, still seeking that first win. In this game they will be looking for their first semifinal appearance since the 2003/04 season whey they lift the title with Jose Mourinho in charge. Their record in two-legged ties against English clubs is W3 L8.

Porto have won all four of their home games played this season in the Champions League, so do have that great from behind them. They have claimed a win eight of their last fifteen European home games (D2 L5). In the last round of the Champions League, they produced a win over Roma. Their overall home record against English clubs is W8 D6 L4. The Dragons collected sixteen points in the group stage, more than any of other club managed. Porto have won only five of the 21 UEFA competition ties in which they lost the away first leg. However, they have lost their last five two-legged ties against English sides.

Liverpool News and Form

Liverpool are well in control though thanks to goals from Naby Keïta and Roberto Firmino. All six of the games between these two played before this tie, have come since 2000, with Liverpool being well up against the Dragons in the head to head. Liverpool have won ten of their previous 14 European Cup quarter-finals. In the last round of the competition, Liverpool saw off Bayern Munich with an impressive away second-leg, banking a 3-1 success at the Allianz Arena. However, Liverpool did lose all three of their away games in the group stage, which was really strange from them.

Liverpool have actually lost five of their last ten European games, all defeats in that sequence happening outside of England. Liverpool have triumphed in 31 UEFA competition ties when they have won the home first leg. On each of the seven occasions that they have won the first leg at home 2-0, they have gone on to win the tie. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last seven away games in all competitions (W4 D3), winning the last three. Only once this season in all competitions as Liverpool lost by a two-goal margin on their travels. That was in Europe at Red Star Belgrade.

Manchester City News and Form

Manchester City need to mount a comeback after losing 1-0 in London. City missed the chance to open the scoring in that game as well, Sergio Aguero missing from the penalty spot. This is Manchester city’s third last-eight tie in the last four seasons and last season they were dumped out at this same stage by Liverpool. So that is five games in Europe against fellow English sides that Manchester City have played and they have lost all of them. In those five games, Manchester City have scored just the one goal. City’s home record in all competitions this season is W23 L2 – winning each of the last 11

City have scored a big 6-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk and a 70 win over Schalke so far at home this season in the Champions League. They have totalled up sixteen goals in their four home fixtures so far in this campaign. The Citizens have won seven of their last 14 European games, losing six of those. At the start of the group stage campaign, they did lose at home to Lyon but won six of their next seven games before losing at Spurs. City have won only two of the seven UEFA competition ties in which they lost the away first leg. City are the top scorers in this season’s UEFA Champions League with 26 goals.

Tottenham News and Form

Things are even in the head to head between City and Spurs, both having taken 61 wins with 35 draws. In English domestic knockout football, Spurs have won nine of the teams’ 14 ties – including five of the last six. This is their fourth all-English European tie, their first in 46 years though. Their record from those previous ties are W1 L2. Spurs hold an away record of W2 D1 L1 in the knockout rounds of the Champions League away from home. They only picked up the two points on their travels in the group stage though.

In the last round, they secured a fantastic win at Borussia Dortmund to progress to the quarterfinals. Spurs have only won five of their last 19 European away games though (D7 L7). Tottenham have won 17 of the 19 ties in UEFA competition in which they won the home first leg. They will be without their talisman Harry Kane though who picked up an injury in the first leg and is likely to out for the rest of the season. This is just the second time in the quarterfinals for Spurs in the Champions League, their previous one being eight years ago. Spurs have won just four of their last nine matches in all competitions, each of the defeats in that sequence happening away from home.

Barcelona News and Form

Barcelona hold a 1-0 advantage in this tie after an own goal by Manchester United’s Luke Shaw in the first leg at Old Trafford. That was their third straight win over Manchester United and for Barcelona, it was their first win in seven away knockout games in the Champions League (D2 L4). That was only their second goal in that sequence of games as well. So it is advantage the Spaniards as they get back to home soil and Barcelona have won five and lost three now of their previous 12 meetings with Manchester United. The Catalans have won 14 of their 24 two-legged ties against English opposition

Barcelona have never lost home game against Manchester United (W2 D2) although the last two meetings at the Nou Camp have ended in a draw. Barcelona have already hosted English opposition this season as they played out a 1-1 draw against Spurs on matchday six of the group stage. Barcelona have lost just one of their last 14 European games against English sides, winning 10 of those. They have won seven of their last nine home games against English sides.

Barcelona’s overall home record against English clubs is W20 D11 L2. Barcelona have lost just one of their last 20 Champions League games (W12 D7). They are unbeaten in 12 knockout stage at the Nou Camp, winning 10 of those. Barca are undefeated in 30 Champions League home games (W27 D3). Barcelona have progressed 36 out of the 38 times they won the away first leg in UEFA competition. Lionel Messi is the joint leading goalscorer in this season’s Champions League with eight.

Manchester United News and Form

So this is going to be an uphill struggle for Manchester United given the European home form of Barcelona. But in the last round of this season’s Champions League, Manchester United made a second leg trip to Paris to face PSG and turnaround a 2-0 deficit. That was only the fourth time that a team in the tournament had come back from losing the home first leg. Manchester United have won both previous two-legged ties against Barcelona. The Red Devils have already faced Spanish opposition this season as they played out a 0-0 home draw and suffered a 2-1 away loss against Valencia in the group stage.

With this season’s action, just United have claimed just two wins in their last 16 games against Spanish opposition (D6 L8). They are currently on a winless streak of seven games against Spanish clubs. But they don’t have too bad of a record in Spain having lost only two of their last 10 visits there (W2 D6). United’s record in two-legged ties against Spanish clubs is W6 L8. The Red Devils have only lost two of their last 13 European away fixtures, winning eight of those. In just one of those games, did they concede more than one goal in a game. Home and away Manchester United have lost seven of their last 29 European fixtures.

Juventus News and Form

The Old Lady picked up a 1-1 draw against Ajax in the first leg of this tie, so things are fairly well balanced as the action heads back to Turin. Cristiano Ronaldo, on a return from injury, got their goal in the fixture which makes it eight goals from six previous appearances against Ajax for him.

In the last round of the Champions League, Juventus had lost away at Atletico Madrid in the first leg, before powering their way to a 3-0 win back on home soil. Ronaldo got all three goals. Juventus are now undefeated in their last ten games against Ajax, winning five of their last seven against them.

Juve have only suffered the two defeats in their 13 previous European games against the Amsterdammers. The Italians have claimed a win in all four of their previous two-legged contests against Ajax. In their previous five home games against Ajax, Juventus have claimed a W3 D2 record from that, blanking their Dutch opponents in their last two in Turin.

Juventus have won three of their four home games this season in the Champions League (W3 L1). The Old Lady have a fantastic home record in the Champions League at the Juventus Stadium, losing just three of 37 previous games there (W22 D12). The Italians are unbeaten in seven against Dutch sides (W4 D3), home and away.

Ajax News and Form

Ajax came through the qualifiers to get to this stage, the only side left in the tournament to have come through the qualifying rounds. In the first leg of this tie it was a David Neres goal 11 seconds into the second period kept their hopes alive. In the round of sixteen, Ajax looked to be on their way out after first leg home defeat against Real Madrid.

However, they went to the Bernabeu and produced a stunning 4-1 win at the Bernabeu to prevail against the current holders. Making that win all the more remarkable was that Ajax had failed to win any of their previous seven games in the knockout stages of the Champions League (D2 L5) before their success at the Bernabeu.

It has only been the one defeat that Ajax have suffered in their last 15 games in European actin, winning eight of those. Away from home they have put together a good W3 D4 record in Europe so have held their own, and that sequence includes a draw at Bayern Munich and the win at Real Madrid.

So there is every chance that they are going to stick in this tie in Turin. They are on a four match undefeated streak in Italy (W2 D2), picking up a clean sheet in each of those games. Overall in two-legged ties against Italian sides, Ajax are W5 L7, losing three of their last four. Ajax have lost nine of the 12 UEFA competition ties in which they drew the home first leg.

Juventus v Ajax Tips & Odds

Bayern Munich News and Form

Bayern Munich held firm at Anfield in the first leg, coming away with a 0-0 draw. Will the missed chance of away goals come back to haunt them though? It wasn’t the greatest of games with both sides looking pretty cautious. Bayern have won their last four home games against English sides. This will be just their seventh match against Liverpool. The head to head stands even between the two sides at one win each and five drawn matches.

Bayern hold a record of W11 L3 in their previous round of sixteen ties in the Champions League. They have won each of their last seven. Before that draw at Anfield in the first leg of this tie, Bayern Munich had won five straight round of sixteen matches. They have scored a total of 31 goals in their last seven matches at this stage of the competition. Before not getting on the scoresheet at Anfield, Bayern had scored 15 goals in their three previous games against Premier League sides.

The Bavarians have a W10 L5 record in two-legged ties against English sides. They have won each of the last five. Since 2013 when they won the trophy, all of Bayern Munich’s exists since have been at the hands of Spanish sides only. Bayern are W2 D1 at home in this season’s competition, scoring eight goals in that sequence. Robert Lewandowski scored eight goals in total in the group stage. Bayern have won all but two of the 23 UEFA ties in which they drew the first leg away from home.

Liverpool News and Form

Liverpool hold a good W5 L1 record at the round of sixteen in the Champions League. Will they pay the price for not having been a bit bolder on home soil in the first leg? Liverpool are undefeated in each of their last seven matches at this stage of the competition, winning five of them and they have conceded at this stage since the 2006/07 season. The last time that Liverpool were up against Bundesliga opposition was in last season’s playoffs when they posted a 6-3 aggregate win over Hoffenheim.

Liverpool are W14 L2 from their sixteen previous two-legged ties against German sides. They have won each of their last four against Bundesliga opponents. In their last four trips to Germany, Liverpool remain unbeaten with a W2 D2 record. Their overall record in Germany is not terrific at W3 D9 L5 though. The Reds had been on a three-match winning streak against German sides before the first leg of this tie.

The Reds are undefeated in their last nine against German sides (W6 L3). The Premier League side did not have a good time out on their travels in the group stage this season. They lost all three road games at Napoli, PSG and Red Star Belgrade. That is four straight away losses Liverpool have suffered in Europe. Liverpool, home and away, have lost five of their last nine European games, all of those defeats happening outside of England. Liverpool are W3 L4 from previous European ties after having drawn the first leg at home.

Barcelona News and Form

It was a tight first leg in France that Barcelona had to go through. They are favourites to get through the tie still, as they have only lost one of their last 18 Champions League games. Barca are unbeaten in this season’s competition after topping out Group B in the first round of action. Barcelona have won 12 of their fourteen previous round of 16 ties in the competition.

Barcelona have won each of their last eleven round of sixteen ties. Barcelona hold a W5 D3 record against Lyon in the competition, their most recent meeting prior to this was in the 2008/09 round of sixteen. In that tie, Barcelona won 6-3 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in France in the first leg. The Blaugrana are W12 D1 L1 from previous home games in the round of sixteen, winning each of their last eleven at the Nou Camp.

The last time they hosted a French side was that stunning 6-1 second leg win over PSG in the 2016/17 round of sixteen, after Barca had lost the first leg 4-0. That was their third straight home win over French opposition. Barcelona’s record against French sides is W4 D3 in two-legged ties. Barcelona are W9 D2 in their last nine knockout stage home matches. They are unbeaten in 29 home games in the Champions League. Barca have won 20 of 25 ties in which they had drawn the first leg away from home.

Lyon News and Form

Lyon are in their tenth round of sixteen tie in the Champions League, but this is their first in seven season. They have lost five of their last six ties at this stage. The French side have also lost four of their last five away games in the round of sixteen. Their overall away record at this stage of the competition is W3 D2 L4. Knowing that they only need a score draw out of this will keep their hopes alive.

Lyon are W3 L3 from their six previous ties against Spanish opposition. Their last encounter with a Spanish side was a 4-1 aggregate win over Villarreal in the 2017/18 Europa League. Lyon impressed in the group stage of this season’s Champions League with their resilience, taking four points from their two meetings with Manchester City. They posted a W1 D5 record in the group.

If you take the draw in the first leg of this tie as well, that’s six draws in a row for them currently in Europe. Lyon have suffered one defeat in their last eleven European matches now. After scoring at least two goals in six straight European games, they have produced just one in their last two now. Les Gones have a W4 D3 L1 record in their last eight European away games. They are undefeated in their last five (W2 D3) Champions League away games. Lyon have lost all previous European ties (8) in which they drew the first leg at home.

Juventus News and Form

Juventus have it all to do. In the last two seasons of the Champions League Juventus have exited at the hands of Spanish opposition, so it’s not a great omen. In their one previous home game against Atletico Madrid, there was a 0-0 draw played out in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League group stage. This Juventus’s tenth UCL round of sixteen tie, holding a W6 L3 record form their previous nine.

The record of Juventus in two-legged tie against Spanish clubs is W9 L6 so it’s right there. In Turin in the group stage of this season’s campaign, Juventus posted a W2 L1 record, the reverse in that run of games happening against Manchester United. They were undefeated in 27 home games in Europe before that defeat (W16 D11).

Still, they have only lost two for their last 26 knockout stage games in UEFA competition with a brilliant W15 D9 record from that (includes qualifying). Juve did win both of their games against Sevilla in their season’s group stage. They have suffered only the one loss in their last 11 home games against La Liga opposition (W6 D4). Juve have won 14 of the 32 UEFA ties in which they lost the away first leg.

Atletico Madrid News and Form

Late goals at the Metropolitano from Jose Maria Gimenez and Diego Godin has set Atletico up well in this tie. This is their fifth appearance in six seasons at this stage of the competition and they have won four of those five previous appearances. They lost their first ever one on away goals against Porto, so have prevailed in each of their last four round of sixteen ties.

Atletico hold a W2 L2 from previous two-legged ties against Italian opposition. The Rojiblancos have won eight of their last ten games with Serie A sides, home and away (D2). They did have some troubles on the road in the group stage this season. Atletico went W1 D1 L1 on their travels in the group stage, the loss happening against Borussia Dortmund 4-0. They took just the one clean sheet in their three road games. That loss at Dortmund actually snapped a five-match winning streak of European form that Atleti were on.

It is only one of two defeats that they have recorded in their last 21 European fixtures (W14 D5). Atletico have won just three of their last ten European away games though, losing two of that sequence. Los Colchoneros have avoided defeat in each of their last four road games in Italy, the last two both ending 0-0. Atlético have won 30 of the 37 UEFA competition ties in which they have prevailed in the home first leg

Manchester City News and Form

Manchester City looked in trouble at 2-1 down and with Nicolas Otamendi having been sent off in the first leg of this tie. But the Citizens pounced back with Raheem Sterling netting a 90th-minute winner in Gelsenkirchen. This is the sixth straight season that Manchester City find themselves in the round of sixteen. City have lost both of their previous two-legged contests against German clubs.

They have won two of their last three ties at this stage of the competition. That is the only two wins in the round of sixteen in their five previous visits. The result in the first leg leaves Man City with three wins in their four previous games against Schalke (L1). City lost at home against Basel in the second leg of their round of sixteen tie last season but won comfortably on aggregate still.

The result against Basel means that City have won only one of their five home games in the round of sixteen (D1 L3). Manchester City have won seven of their last eight games against German opposition and after beating Hoffenheim 2-1 on matchday six, this is their third straight game against Bundesliga opposition in Europe.

City hold a W7 D2 L1 record at home against German opposition. Manchester City have won half of their last twelve European matches, home and away, losing five of those. So it’s not the greatest of records really. Still, as a positive, they have never lost any of their nine previous European two-legged ties after having won the first leg away from home.

Schalke News and Form

Both of Schalke’s goals in the first leg came from penalty kicks. This is their first appearance in the round of sixteen since the 2014/15 season when they lost on aggregate to Real Madrid. They have won only one of their five previous away games in the round of sixteen in the UEFA Champions League (D2 L2).

Schalke have lost each to their last three round of sixteen ties and have won only two of their five previous ties at this stage of the competition. Their last one was against Valencia in 2010/11. In the group stage campaign, this season the Germans took four points on their travels, but have lost just three of their last fifteen road games in Europe (W8 D4).

Schalke are winless in their last six against English opposites (D2 L4) and they have won only one of their eight previous visits to England (D2 L5). That lone win was at Arsenal. Their record in their two-legged ties against English opposition is W1 L1. Schalke have lost all five UEFA ties in which they lost at home in the first leg.

PSG were very impressive at Old Trafford and that was without either Neymar or Edinson Cavani in the side. It was Kylian Mbappe who was the start of the show as Manchester United had no answer to his pace and power. So now PSG are in sight of a quarter-final for the first time in three years. This is the seventh straight appearance in the round of sixteen for PSG, but they have been eliminated in each of the last two seasons at this very stage. Their overall round of sixteen record is W4 L2. PSG are W3 L3 in six previous ties against English sides, the most recent of which was against Man City in the 2015/16 quarter-finals.

PSG have scored in each of their last 23 Champions League matches. PSG beat Liverpool in this season’s group stage on home soil, their first win in six in Paris against an English side. PSG are W4 D4 L1 at home against English opposition in their history. They are unbeaten in six at home against EPL sides (W3 D3) but haven’t earned a clean sheet in any of their last six. PSG have lost just two of their last 50 European home games, earning seven points in this season’s group stage home fixtures. Paris have won all 15 UEFA competition ties when they have recorded a first-leg away victory.

Manchester United News and Form

The Reds have a big task on their hands to try and turn this around. This is their 11th time at this stage of the competition and they are W6 L4 from their previous ten. United were dumped out of last season’s competition at this stage by Sevilla. Their draw out in Spain in that tie makes it four straight away games in the knockout stages of the Champions League without a win by the Red Devils (D3 L1). Their overall away record in the round of sixteen is W2 D5 L3. The Red Devils have only scored in exactly half of those ten matches.

The Red Devils posted a W2 L1 record in the group stage away from home. Their loss at Valencia on matchday six is their only away defeat in their last dozen road games in European action. During that sequence of twelve away games, United have only conceded the seven goals. Home and away combined, Manchester United have suffered a loss in just six of their last 27 European games, winning sixteen of those. They have lost their last two played though. The Red Devils had an eight-match undefeated streak of form (W6 D2) against French sides snapped in the first leg of this tie. United have never come back from a first-leg home defeat to win the tie in UEFA competition.

Who will win – PSG v Manchester United Predictions

Manchester United may just end up fading from this game. PSG had so much control over them at Old Trafford, it’s hard to see the French side letting anything slip in this one. PSG to win to nil just to see out the tie in a low scoring game looks good.

Real Madrid News and Form

With their 2-1 success in the first leg, Real Madrid produced their seventh straight win over Ajax. They are pretty well placed here now. Real Madrid, who are the reigning champions, have won their last nine two-legged knockout ties in the tournament. Real Madrid are now W8 D1 L4 in their previous game against Ajax. Real Madrid have fired off nine goals in their last three home games against Ajax, conceding just the one. They are gunning for their ninth straight quarterfinals appearance in the tournament.

Their overall record at this stage of the tournament is W9 L6, winning their last eight ties on the bounce. Real Madrid holds a W6 L3 record in two-legged ties against Dutch sides. The Spaniards are on a five-match home winning streak against Dutch opposition. Overall Real Madrid have suffered just six losses in their last 50 European matches, home and away. Strangely though they have lost two of their last five.

Ajax News and Form

Ajax are now left with no win in their last seven UEFA Champions League knockout stage matches (D2 L5). This is their second appearance only in the round of sixteen, having lost against Inter Milan in the 2005/06 round of sixteen. Ajax are on a three-match losing streak away from home in Champions League knockout stage matches. The last time they faced Spanish opposition was in the 2016/17 Europa League group stage, a 2-2 draw at Celta Vigo ending a six-match losing streak in Spain.

Their record though in two-legged knockout stage matches against Spanish sides is a hugely positive W7 D2, their last success in such a tie was back in 1999/2000 though. Ajax have a W2 L12 record in two-legged ties in European action after having lost the first leg at home. Ajax are the only side left in the competition who came through the qualifiers to reach the group stage.

Who will win – Real Madrid v Ajax Predictions

Real Madrid should get through this tie but Ajax gave them a good workout in the first leg. The Dutch side may be able to get a goal on the board at least, but it should still be a home win for the Spaniards. Real Madrid to win & both teams to score.
