Olympiakos v FK Krasnodar Champions League Preview, 21st August 8.00pm

Olympiakos haven’t conceded in this season’s Europa League qualifiers so will be looking to run a tight ship on home soil for the first leg of this playoff tie. This will be the first meeting between the two clubs, but Krasnodar have plenty to be positive about after having knocked out Porto in the last round. Draw 12/5
FK Krasnodar 11/4
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 18th, 2019 7:27 p.m.)

Olympiakos News and Form

Olympiakos hold a W3 L1 record against Russian teams. They started in this season’s second qualifying round and from their four games played, have not conceded a goal. You can’t argue with that. Their domestic league doesn’t start until later in the month so they are missing a bit of match sharpness compared to other teams in the qualifiers Still, they took a 4-0 aggregate win over Viktoria Plzen to start with before landing a 3-0 success against Basaksehir.

Six of their seven European goals this season have come on home soil. Last season they were in the Europa League, having started in the third qualifying round. They make it to the round of 32 where they were stopped by Dynamo Kyiv. Olympiakos are undefeated in their last ten European home games now and have won seven of their last eight two-legged European ties.

Olympiakos v FK Krasnodar Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two teams

FK Krasnodar News and Form

Krasnodar have only made one previous visit to Greece and that ended in a -0 draw at PAOK back in 2015. Because the Russian top-flight started in the middle of last month, Krasnodar does have that advantage of having had extra playing time, so they should be fitter. Their record hits season across all competitions is W5 D1 L2. They started their Champions League qualification campaign in the last round and they pulled off a shock as well.

They had lost 1-0 at home against Porto in the first leg, but then out of nowhere produced a stunning 3-2 road win in the second leg, going 3-0 up in just over half an hour of that game. Despite Porto pushing back, Krasnodar held on to get their away goal win in the tie. This is their first run at the UEFA Champions League, having competed in the Europa League qualifiers in each of the five previous seasons. Last season Krasnodar did make it to the round of sixteen in the Europa League. The Russians are D1 L4 in their last five away games in Europe.

Olympiakos v FK Krasnodar Tips & Odds

Who will win – Olympiakos v FK Krasnodar Predictions

This is a good looking game, but we have to lean towards the home record of the Greeks to get the business done in this one. They are going to be tough to knock over on home soil for sure and the Russian don’t have that great of an away record. Home win.

Young Boys v Red Star Belgrade Champions League Preview, 21st August 8.00pm

These two met up in the 2004/05 Champions League qualification campaign and it was the Serbians who came out on top. So Swiss side Young Boys will be looking for a bit of revenge and they will know the importance of home soil here. Red Star haven’t won any of their last seven away games in Europe. Read our Young Boys v Red Star Belgrade betting tips for more.

* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 18th, 2019 7:27 p.m.)

Young Boys News and Form

Young Boys and Red Star both made their group stage debuts last season in the Champions League. Neither made it to the knockout stage. However, Young Boys did earn a notable win, as they beat Juventus 2-1 on matchday six. That saw them earn their first-ever win in a Champions League proper fixture. The Swiss side are starting their European campaign this season at this playoff stage.

They are the reigning champions of Switzerland and in their European campaign last season they beat Dinamo Zagreb in the playoffs. That was their first playoff success in four attempts. The wind that they took over Juventus last season was just their sixth in 24 Champions League matches (including qualifiers) for a W6 D4 L14 record. They are D2 L2 from four previous matches against Serbian opposition.

Young Boys v Red Star Belgrade Head to Head

The two met in the 04/05 qualifying
Red Star Belgrade won the previous tie 5-2 on aggregate

Red Star Belgrade News and Form

In their debut Champions League group stage campaign, Red Star Belgrade finished bottom, but they did to get a home win over eventual winners Liverpool. They won their domestic league title for the second season running to get another crack at the Champions League. Last season’s playoff was their first and they took a 2-2 aggregate away win in the tie over Salzburg.

Whereas Young Boys are just starting their European campaign this season, this will be the seventh match for Red Star. They beat Suduva 2-1 on aggregate in the first qualifying round, 3-2 on aggregate against HJK Helsinki and then a penalty shootout win over FC Copenhagen in the last round. So it’s been tight margins for them. This season in all competitions Red Star are W6 D3 L1. They have one clean sheet in their last five played. Red Star have won five of 13 previous matches against Swiss opposition, and just one of those were away.

Young Boys v Red Star Belgrade Tips & Odds

Home win outright at 4/5
Over 2.5 goals at 11/10
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 18th, 2019 7:27 p.m.)

Who will win – Young Boys v Red Star Belgrade Predictions

We are going to go with the home win in this one because Red Star are not a form team away from home in Europe. So the Swiss hosts are the most likely of the two to produce a result at least.

Dinamo Zagreb News and Form

Dinamo Zagreb have a W1 D3 L1 record against Norwegian sides. The Croatians have been to the group stage of the Champions League four times before and they are back in contention for their fifth appearance after winning the Croatian top flight last season. In last season’s Champions League qualifiers they fell in the playoff stage against Young Boys. Down the Europa League, they won their section and were eventually stopped in the round of sixteen by Benfica.

In this season’s UCL campaign they started in the second qualifying round where they took an easy 5-0 aggregate success over Saburtalo. They then took out Ferencvaros 5-1 on aggregate in the next round. They hold a W4 L2 record in the UEFA Champions League playoffs. Dinamo have lost just one of their last 22 UEFA Champions League qualifying games (W14 D7). The Croatians are undefeated in their last five European home games (W5 D2) losing one of their last twelve.

Dinamo Zagreb v Rosenborg Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two teams

Rosenborg News and Form

This will be the first time that Norwegian side Rosenborg have met Croatian opposition. They claimed the Norwegian title for the fourth straight time at the end of last season and picked up the domestic cup as well. Rosenborg have appeared in the group stage of the Champions League 11 times in their history but their last appearance was back in 2007. So it has been a while.

Since then they have gone out of the qualifiers five times including last season where they were stopped in the second qualifying round by Celtic. They then dropped to the Europa League where they finished bottom of their group. This is just their second playoff tie in the Champions League qualifiers, losing their first in 2010/11. The Norwegians have won five of their six European games played this season, beating Linfield 6-0, BATE Borisov 3-2 and then getting a 6-2 win over Maribor in the last round.

LASK Linz News and Form

This is the Champions League playoff debut for Linz and this is going to be just their fifth game in the European Cup/Champions League in their history. They were runners up in the Austrian top flight last season and made their return to European action last season for the first time since 2000.

They were in the Europa League second qualifying round last season and got past that but fell to Besiktas in the third qualifying round. This is the first time that they have ever met a Belgian side. Linz entered at the third qualifying round in this season’s UEFA Champions League campaign and collected a 5-2 aggregate win over FC Basel, winning both legs. That was a pretty impressive result against a strong side.

LASK Linz v Club Brugge Head to Head

This tie is the first meetings between the two clubs

Club Brugge News and Form

The Belgians have been in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in two of the last three seasons. In total they have made six previous visits to the group stage of the competition. They were runners up in their domestic league last season. In last season’s Champions League group stage, Club Brugge finished third behind Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid and were then knocked out in the round of 32 of the Europa League by Salzburg.

The Belgians have a record of W4 D2 L5 against Austrian sides and they are on a three-match winning streak at home against Austrian teams. So they should look forward to the second leg. This is just the second time that Club Brugge have appeared in the Champions League playoff, losing their prior appearance at this stage against Manchester United. They knocked out Dynamo Kyiv to set up this clash.

CFR Cluj News and Form

CFR’s record against Czech teams is W2 L2 and it has been a challenging campaign for them so far in this season’s Champions League. They have gotten past Astana, Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Celtic. They lost their away leg against Astana but recovered back at home. Then they just edged Maccabi Tel Aviv 3-2 on aggregate after a tense 2-2 second leg away draw. But Cluj did compose themselves pretty well to get past Celtic.

After a 1-1 home draw in the first leg, they looked in trouble. But they took their chances superbly at Celtic Park to get a 4-3 win there against the Scottish Championship. That is just one clean sheet in six European games from them this season though. In all competitions, this season Cluj are W7 D4 L2. They are unbeaten at W4 D2 at home. CFR Cluj have scored one goal exactly in four of their six home fixtures this season.

CFR Cluj v Slavia Prague Head to Head

This tie is the first meeting between the two clubs

Slavia Prague News and Form

Czech champions Slavia Prague are stepping out into action here in the Champions League for the first time this season. They have gotten some domestic action under their belt, so shouldn’t be rusty or anything. They are W5 D1 in their six league games played this season and they have only conceded one goal in that sequence of games. Slavia Prague are undefeated in six previous games against Romanian Clubs (W2 D4).

It was 12 years ago that Slavia Prague made their sole appearance in the group stage of the Champions League. Last season they fell in the Champions League third qualifying round and then made it to the Europa League group stage, going on to make a run to the quarter-finals where they were stopped by Chelsea. Slavia Prague has claimed just one win in their last 15 UEFA Champions League matches (D7 L7).

APOEL News and Form

APOEL started their qualification in the second qualifying round, where they took a comfortable 4-0 aggregate success over Sutjeska. It was a bit tenser for them in the third qualifying round though after losing the first leg at home against Qarabag 2-1. But they managed to turn it around with a 2-0 road success. So that is just one of their three games so far in the qualifiers which have seen both teams score. Last season APOEL lost in the Europa League playoffs. Their home form is not bad as they are W5 L1 in their last six European home games, with four clean sheets in that sequence. They are looking to make a return to the Champions League group stage for the first time since finishing bottom of the 2017/18 campaign.

APOEL v Ajax Head to Head

The only previous time that these two met was in the 2014/5 CL group stage
There was a 1-1 draw in Cyprus
Ajax won their home game 4-0

Ajax News and Form

Ajax had a tremendous run in last season’s Champions League. They came through three qualifying rounds and were just seconds away from reaching the final. They lost just two of 18 European matches last season with a W10 D6 record. Their record in the UEFA Champions League playoff is W2 L1. last season on the domestic front Ajax won the Eredivisie title for the first time since 2014 and landed the Dutch Cup.

In the third qualifying round of this season’s Champions League qualifiers, they had a real squeeze. They played out a 2-2 draw away from home and then an 85th-minute penalty from Dusan Tadic back at home, saw them ended up taking a 5-4 aggregate win. In all competitions, this season Ajax are W4 D2. They have scored at least two goals in every game played in that sequence.

Celtic News and Form

Celtic have been well among the goals this season. Across all competitions, they have posted a W6 D1 record from seven played, the draw coming in the first leg of this tie. That is the only game they have played this season too, in which they have not scored at least two goals. Celtic rattled off a 5-2 win at Motherwell in the Scottish top flight on the weekend, making it twelve goals in two games in their title defence on the domestic front so far.

In Europe they started with a 5-2 aggregate win over Sarajevo, before banking a 7-0 aggregate success over Nomme Kalju. After their 1-1 draw in Romania, Celtic are now W5 D3 L1 in their last nine UEFA Champions League games, the draw against Cluj snapping a four-match winning streak. Celtic are also W4 D1 in their last five European games on home soil, scoring at least two goals in each of the wins in that sequence.

Celtic v CFR Cluj Head to Head

The first leg of this tie was the first competitive meeting between the two clubs

CFR Cluj News and Form

Cluj will probably be pretty happy with their work on home soil in not getting beaten by Celtic. They should be fully aware that they are up against it now in Glasgow. CFR Cluj started their European campaign this season in the first qualification round, taking a 3-2 aggregate success over Astana after having lost the first leg away from home 1-0. Then they claimed another 3-2 aggregate success when they took on Maccabi Tel Aviv in the second qualification round.

The Romanians have won just one of their last five Champions League away games now (D3 L1) which actually isn’t all that bad. Their loss at Astana in this season’s campaign is their only road defeat in their last eight away games in the Champions League. They are not going to pose a massive threat to Celtic at Parkhead, but they may put up some early stubborn resistance.

FC Copenhagen News and Form

Copenhagen came up with an equaliser six minutes from time in the first leg out in Belgrade. That gives them a nice foothold in the fixture with the cushion of the away goal. It is always a nice thing to have in the bag. The Danish SuperLiga started back in the middle of July so they have had plenty of matches under their belt already this season. They started in the second qualifying round of this season’s Champions League qualifiers where they saw off The New Saints 3-0 on aggregate.

This is their first campaign back in the Champions League since 2017. The Danish outfit are actually undefeated in their last four Champions League games, losing just one of their last five (W3 D1 L1). Their home record in Champions League fixtures from recent campaigns is superb. They are on a three-match winning streak and have posted an impressive W6 D2 L1 record in their last nine home fixtures in the competition.

FC Copenhagen v Red Star Belgrade Head to Head

The first leg of this tie was the first meeting between the two clubs

Red Star Belgrade News and Form

Red Star will have been disappointed at having given up that away goal after having been in a good position. Early in the new season, both on the domestic and European front, they have been a bit patchy with their form. They are W1 D1 L1 in their last three played in all competitions. Red Star’s season started back in the first qualifying round of the Champions League, taking a 2-1 aggregate win over over FK Suduva.

In the second qualifying round they made hard work of getting past HSJ Helsinki, taking a 3-2 aggregate win in the tie after a second-leg away loss. So in their five European games played this season they are W2 D2 L1. Their away form will be their big worry for them. They are D2 L4 in their last six road games in the UEFA Champions League. That includes last season’s campaign in the group stage of the competition alongside PSG, Liverpool and Napoli.

Dynamo Kyiv News and Form

Dynamo Kyiv won’t be too unhappy with their work done in the first leg, even though they trail in the tie. It was always going to be a matter of them keeping themselves in the tie. A 1-0 deficit is certainly nothing for them to be overly concerned about. The first leg of this tie was their first game in this season’s qualifiers. Last season they fell in the playoff round to Ajax after having started at the third qualifying round stage as well.

They are currently on a three-match winless streak of form in the Champions League, winning just one of their last six played (D2 L3). So while that is nothing great, their home form is worth a mention. They are currently undefeated in their last four Champions League home games, winning three of those. They held out for a 0-0 draw against Ajax in their home fixture of last season’s playoff tie. Dynomo Kiev have scored eleven goals in their last four home games, conceding just one.

Dynamo Kyiv v Club Brugge Head to Head

The first leg of this tie was the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.

Club Brugge News and Form

Club Brugge will be tentative here. Have they done enough? Time will tell. They are in a bit of form this season having won all three of their domestic games at the start of their new campaign, while they secured that win over Dynamo Kyiv in the first leg of this tie. So it is four wins from four with no goals conceded in their last three.

The win in the first leg of this tie though shook off a poor sequence of form that the Belgian club have been in in the UEFA Champions League. They were on an eight-match winless streak before that (D3 L5) in UCL fixtures. That’s a poor return and their away form in the competition doesn’t bring much cheer for them either. They have won one of their last nine away games in the Champions League (W1 D1 L7). Club Brugge are going to be in for a very tough road trip.

Dynamo Kyiv v Club Brugge Tips & Odds

Under 2.5 goals at 3/4
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 12th, 2019 at 1:14 p.m.)

Who will win – Dynamo Kyiv v Club Brugge Predictions

There is enough in the European home form of Kyiv to suggest that they can turn this tie around. Again this is likely to be a tight game between the two of them, but a one goal winning margin over 90 minutes looks like a good fit for the home team.

* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 5th, 2019 at 10:15 p.m.)

CFR Cluj News and Form

Cluj opened their qualification campaign this season with a tie against Astana. They managed to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit to post a 3-2 aggregate success. So that was a struggle for them. It wasn’t a great deal easier for them in the second qualifying round either against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Cluj battled through to a 3-2 aggregate success.

Given their struggles on the road so far this season in the qualifiers, they are going to want to bank a strong home performance here. They are W3 D1 in their last four European home fixtures so they do have that going for them. Only two of their last seven UEFA Champions League matches have gone over the 2.5 goal line.

It feels like a long time since they were playing Manchester United in the group stage of the 2011/12 edition. They are four games into the new Liga 1 season and Club have a W3 D1 record from that.

CFR Cluj v Celtic Head to Head

The two teams will be meeting for the first time

Celtic News and Form

So it’s a road trip up for Celtic first in this tie. They have been untroubled so far on their journey through the first qualifying rounds, giving up just one goal in their four games. They opened with a 5-2 aggregate win over Sarajevo. Then it was a comfortable 7-0 aggregate success over Nomme Kalju that the Scottish Champions earned. So it’s been plain sailing.

Given that they opened their new domestic season on the weekend with a crushing 7-0 win over St Johnstone, it’s far to say Celtic have opened the new season well. It is perhaps just the away form of Celtic that is worth a look. They have won both road games this season (by a two-goal margin) but overall they are W4 D1 L4 in their last nine European road games. Ryan Christie got a hattrick on the weekend taking his tally to five in five games this season.

Celtic do have the goals in them to get through this tie. This will be the toughest test which they have faced so far this season though and it does look to be a tricky away game. But we would back the Scottish champions to handle themselves and get a win, especially at the match outright price.
