Celtic have themselves a trip to France to open their Europa League campaign with. They have ended up back in the competition after another failed attempt at Champions League qualification. Will they be able to get themselves a good away win? Both teams reached the knockout stage of last season’s competition. Read our Rennes v Celtic betting tips for more.

Rennes are back in the Europa League having pulled off a shock win over PSG in the French Cup final last season. It was a penalty shoot-out win which they took to lift the cup. In last season’s Europa League they made it through the group stage (having qualified directly) with a second-place finish. They took out Real Betis in the round of 32 but were stopped by Arsenal in the following round.
This is just their third Europa League group stage appearance They have only suffered one defeat in their last 14 home games in the UEFA Cup/Europa League (W7 D6). The Brittany club have never beaten a Scottish club having picked up a D2 L2 record in their four previous attempts. Rennes are sitting in second place in this season’s French top flight.
Celtic met Rennes in the 2011 Europa League group stage
There was a 1-1 draw between them in France
Celtic then took a 3-1 home win
Celtic have claimed only five wins from their previous 16 games against French opposition. The two most recent encounters went badly as they lost 5-0 and 7-1 against PSG in the 2017/18 Champions League. They have taken just one previous win in France. After winning the double in Scotland for the third straight season, Celtic went to the Champions League qualifiers. They failed to qualify for the main draw, losing out in the third round of Cluj.
Celtic won their Europa League playoff round tie against AIK easy to reach the group stage of the competition for the sixth time. In last season’s Europa League, Celtic lost five games in the competition. They had failed to win out on the road in the competition before their 1-0 success at Rosenborg in last season’s group stage. They are W1 D8 L9 in their overall away matches in the competition proper.
Celtic have poor away form in the Europa League and this is not going to be an easy trip to France for them. It is probably just worth resting with the home win as the outcome for a betting angle.

A heated rivalry is renewed for the first time this season as reigning Scottish Champions Celtic make the short trip across Glasgow to face Rangers. Both of them have made perfect starts to the season, so something is going to have to give on Sunday. Read our Rangers v Celtic betting tips for more.
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 29th, 2019 at 6:35 p.m.)
Can Rangers make the most of home advantage and take an early lead in the title race over their rivals? Rangers have won all three of their league games this season. Sandwiched in between one-goal margin away wins at Kilmarnock and St Mirren, Rangers took a 6-1 win at Ibrox in their only home game of the campaign so far. That wasagainst Hibs.
Rangers have been busy in the Europa League qualifiers as well. Jermain Defoe is their top scorer in the league this season with three goals, followed by Alfredo Morelos with two. Since taking over at the club, Steven Gerrard has largely based his project on defence. But it has been just the one clean sheet from three played this season in the top flight. Eight of the ten top-flight goals they have scored have been in the second half of fixtures.
Rangers won both home league games against Celtic last term
Each of the last five league meetings have ended in a home win
Both teams have scored in just two of the last nine meetings in all competitions
Celtic have outscored Rangers 15-9 in this season’s Premiership
It is four wins from four for Celtic so far this season in the Premiership. They have scored a total of fifteen goals across those fixtures as well. Top scorer for them this season in the top flight is Ryan Christie with four goals. So he is going to be worth a look in the goalscorer markets given his form. James Forrest has produced a club leading three assists.
This is just a second away game of the season for Celtic in the top flight. Their previous one turned up a 5-2 win for them at Motherwell. The concern, after their home win over Hearts on the weekend, will be the lack of clean sheets. 60% of their goals in the top flight this season have been in the second period of matches. The average time of Celtic scoring the first goal this season is 25 minutes.
This should be a glorious chance for Rangers to get another one over on their old rivals. Steven Gerrard’s men are carrying form, look much sharper than they did last season and have home advantage. Rangers to win.

Celtic have a firm foothold in this Europa League playoff tie. This isn’t where they wanted to be, of course, they wanted to be playing up in the Champions League but they crashed out of the qualifiers. A place in the Europa League Group Stage looks like being their consolation. Read our AIK Solna v Celtic betting tips for more.

AIK have their backs against the wall now. They came into the Europa League qualifiers at the third round stage after having lost out in the Champions League qualifiers against Maribor. So they are W3 D1 L3 in their seven European fixtures this season, so a real mixed bag. They won both of their home games in the Champions League qualifiers but were held to a 1-1 tie in the Europa League third qualifying round against Sheriff. AIK are actually winless in their last four Europa League home games now (D3 L1). Each of the draws in that sequence were 1-1 results. On a positive note, they have suffered only two losses in their last nine Europa League home fixtures. Can they fight back?
This tie is the first time AIK and Celtic have met
So it was good work from Celtic to give themselves an advantage in this tie after taking a 2-0 win at Celtic Park. Can they push on from their now? They remained perfect for the season in the Premiership over the weekend with a win over Hearts. Celtic had started in the opening round of the Champions League qualifiers and won all four of their games in the first and second qualifying rounds. They then ran into CFR Cluj. Still, a 1-1 away draw in the first leg of that third-round tie didn’t look too bad for Celtic. It was an away goal and home soil to come.
But Celtic tanked to a devastating 3-4 home loss against Cluj, which is why they are now in the Europa League. Goals from James Forrest and Odsonne Edouard gave them the advantage in this tie. Celtic don’t actually have a great deal of Europa League form going. They are W4 L5 in their last nine in the competition. They were on a three-match losing streak (from last season’s group stage) before their win over AIK in this tie.
When it comes to Celtic in Europe, you are always going to be left a little jittery as a punter. Will they be able to maintain control in his tie? While we expect Celtic to make it all the way through, it’s worth having a look at both teams to score.

Celtic had a disaster in the third qualifying round of the Champions League which means that they have dropped down to the Europa League. They now have to pick up the pieces and try and get themselves going to reach the group stage. It is AIK Solna from Sweden who they are up against in the playoffs. It was a massive collapse that Celtic had on home soil in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. They had played out a 1-1 first leg away draw against Romanian side Cluj. But then a wasteful night in front of goal and some hapless defending saw Celtic lose 3-4 in the home leg of the tie. So that put their Champions League ambitions on ice for another year. In their last four games across all competitions, Celtic are now just W1 D2 L1 (90 minutes) so there is a bit of pressure mounting there.
They really can’t afford not to get into the Europa League now. This is where they ended up last season as well after a failed Champions League qualification campaign. They beat FK Suduva 4-1 on aggregate in last season’s playoffs before managing to pull off a dramatic escape from their Europa League group stage. Celtic were sent packing in the round of 32 by Valencia. The Bhoys have been scoring well this season, can they make the most of home advantage?
This is the first meeting between the two teams
AIK are more than halfway through their domestic league season so they are coming in sharp. Like Celtic, they started this season in the Champions League qualifiers. They couldn’t make it past the second qualifying round there though, losing out in a thrilling tie against Maribor. So that sent them to the Europa League where they knocked down FC Sheriff in the third qualifying round.
So that has been their path in Europe this season. From their six European games played this season AIK Solna haven’t kept a clean sheet and all but one of them have gone over 2.5 goals, so this may be an entertaining fixture. They have lost two of their three away games, both defeats happening by a 2-1 scoreline.
Celtic were all at sea against Cluj which will cast doubts in the minds of punters. But there are much worse ties that the Bhoys could have gotten at this stage. They have been scoring well at home and will be kept to put in a positive shift. Celtic to win & both teams to score.

The tie is balanced after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. But still now with the rreturn leg on home soil, Celtic are the overwhelming favourites to get through. An away goal from the trip to Romania put them in a decent place. The winner of this tie will move on to face Slavia Prague in the playoff round. Read our Celtic v CFR Cluj betting tips for more.

Celtic have been well among the goals this season. Across all competitions, they have posted a W6 D1 record from seven played, the draw coming in the first leg of this tie. That is the only game they have played this season too, in which they have not scored at least two goals. Celtic rattled off a 5-2 win at Motherwell in the Scottish top flight on the weekend, making it twelve goals in two games in their title defence on the domestic front so far.
In Europe they started with a 5-2 aggregate win over Sarajevo, before banking a 7-0 aggregate success over Nomme Kalju. After their 1-1 draw in Romania, Celtic are now W5 D3 L1 in their last nine UEFA Champions League games, the draw against Cluj snapping a four-match winning streak. Celtic are also W4 D1 in their last five European games on home soil, scoring at least two goals in each of the wins in that sequence.
The first leg of this tie was the first competitive meeting between the two clubs
Cluj will probably be pretty happy with their work on home soil in not getting beaten by Celtic. They should be fully aware that they are up against it now in Glasgow. CFR Cluj started their European campaign this season in the first qualification round, taking a 3-2 aggregate success over Astana after having lost the first leg away from home 1-0. Then they claimed another 3-2 aggregate success when they took on Maccabi Tel Aviv in the second qualification round.
The Romanians have won just one of their last five Champions League away games now (D3 L1) which actually isn’t all that bad. Their loss at Astana in this season’s campaign is their only road defeat in their last eight away games in the Champions League. They are not going to pose a massive threat to Celtic at Parkhead, but they may put up some early stubborn resistance.
We don’t see any troubles ahead for Celtic. They have been in fine scoring form with Ryan Christie having had a tremendous start to the new season. The challenge of Cluj will fall away from the longer the game wears on. With that having been said, Celtic to win to nil.

Romania’s CFR Cluj is the next opponent that Celtic have to try and get through on their road to the Champions League group stage. Cluj opened their qualification campaign this season with a tie against Astana. They managed to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit to post a 3-2 aggregate success. So that was a struggle for them. It wasn’t a great deal easier for them in the second qualifying round either against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Cluj battled through to a 3-2 aggregate success.
Given their struggles on the road so far this season in the qualifiers, they are going to want to bank a strong home performance here. They are W3 D1 in their last four European home fixtures so they do have that going for them. Only two of their last seven UEFA Champions League matches have gone over the 2.5 goal line.
It feels like a long time since they were playing Manchester United in the group stage of the 2011/12 edition. They are four games into the new Liga 1 season and Club have a W3 D1 record from that.
The two teams will be meeting for the first time
So it’s a road trip up for Celtic first in this tie. They have been untroubled so far on their journey through the first qualifying rounds, giving up just one goal in their four games. They opened with a 5-2 aggregate win over Sarajevo. Then it was a comfortable 7-0 aggregate success over Nomme Kalju that the Scottish Champions earned. So it’s been plain sailing.
Given that they opened their new domestic season on the weekend with a crushing 7-0 win over St Johnstone, it’s far to say Celtic have opened the new season well. It is perhaps just the away form of Celtic that is worth a look. They have won both road games this season (by a two-goal margin) but overall they are W4 D1 L4 in their last nine European road games. Ryan Christie got a hattrick on the weekend taking his tally to five in five games this season.
Celtic do have the goals in them to get through this tie. This will be the toughest test which they have faced so far this season though and it does look to be a tricky away game. But we would back the Scottish champions to handle themselves and get a win, especially at the match outright price.

Once again it was a runaway league success for Celtic last season in the Scottish top flight. They posted a W27 D6 L5 record across the course of the season. They only conceded the 20 goals last season. The home record that Celtic produced was W17 D2 L0 so there is a decent chance that they will be walking off with three points in this one. They earned a clean sheet in 68% of their home fixture last term, winning 58% of home fixtures to nil.
In attack Celtic averaged just a tiny shade under 2.5 goals per home game. Only 58% of their home games went over 2.5 goals and that was because of how miserly they were at the back. Celtic conceded just 7 home goals in last season’s campaign. Of their 17 home wins eleven of them were by a margin of at least two goals. With them having had competitive game time already in the Champions League qualifiers, they should be dialled in well.
Celtic beat St Johnstone six times last season
St Johnstone have failed to score against Celtic in seven meetings
Celtic will claim their 100th win over the Saints with a victory on Saturday
Celtic are W1 D2 in their last three league home games against the Saints
The Saints did finish top of the bottom section in the Premiership after the split the last term. So they had that going for them. Their away record for the term was W7 D2 L10 something great at all. Most of their away day woes started around the end of January. They lost seven of their last nine away games, drawing the other two. It was a dreadful run of form.
The Saints averaged under a goal per game on their travels last season. They had conceded at an average of 1.4 goals per road fixture. Just 32% of their away games last season made it over 2.5 goals. Of their ten away defeats pick up last season, only two of them were by a margin of just one goal. Given their poor form against Celtic, it is hard to see them having a great start to the season.
The Bhoys had an easy time of things against the Saints last season. It’s not a big stretch to imagine that they will be continuing their winning streak over St Johnstone. Celtic have already gotten some important competitive game time in and should break their opponents. Celtic to win to nil.

The Estonian just were never going to have an easy night in Glasgow. They didn’t. The Pink Panthers are set for an early exit from the qualifiers after losing the first leg 5-0. The closest that they have ever come to reaching the main draw of a UEFA competition was when they made it to the third qualifying round of the 2016/17 Europa League.
They earned an away-goal success in the first qualifying round of this season’s campaign, taking out Macedonian side Shkhendija. But that was a heavy loss at Celtic Park which is highly unlikely to be overturned. The Estonian outfit are now W2 D1 L4 in their last seven European games. They have alternated between a defeat and a win in their last six home games in European action. Regardless of the actual scoreline, a win in his match would be a huge success for them.
The first leg of his qualifying tie was the first meeting between the two teams
It was easy as you like from Celtic on home soil in the first leg. Ryan Christie scored a brace in the match with the other goals coming from Kristoffer Ajer, Leigh Griffiths and Callum McGregor. Celtic took a 5-2 aggregate win over Sarajevo in the first qualifying round of this season’s Champions League campaign. So that’s at least two goals in each of their fixtures so far. Boss Neil Lennon will be happy to have gotten a clean sheet in the bag as well. Last season in the Champions League qualifiers Celtic made it to the third round before falling to AEK Athens. They then made it to the round of 32 in the Europa League where they lost to Valencia. Celtic have won just two of their last eight away European games, but both of those wins have been in their last three on the road.
This is the perfect situation for Celtic. They have a big lead in the tie and they don’t have to break a sweat in this return fixture. They have the start of their Premiership title defence coming up on the weekend, so don’t even need to send out a strong side. Celtic to win to nil.

There is overwhelming odds-on favouritism then on Celtic getting the win in this game. They kick off this tie on home soil and will be hoping to do enough at Celtic Park to take it easy in the second leg. Celtic banked a 5-2 aggregate win over Sarajevo in the last round. The one concern there for Neil Lennon’s men is the lack of clean sheets, although this may be an easier tie for them. Celtic had taken a 3-1 lead in the tie from the first leg away from home, before finishing the job back at home.
All five goals for Celtic in that tie against Sarajevo were scored by different players. At this stage of last season’s qualification campaign, Celtic beat Rosenborg 3-1 on aggregate. The Bhoys are W5 L3 in their last eight European games. They are W2 L3 in their last five European home fixtures. This should end up being a massively favourable draw for the Scottish champions.
This will be the first meeting between the two clubs
Kalju pulled off an upset in the first qualifying round of this season’s Europa League. The Estonian champions were up against Macenodian champions Shkendija in that tie. Kalju won through on away goals after winning the second leg out on the road 1-0. Their new domestic league started in March so they are currently about half way through their season there. So they are match fit. On the domestic front, they are unbeaten in their last sixteen games.
But Kalju are well off the pace for a Meistriliiga title defence. They have had a lot of attempts in European qualifiers over the last decade or so. This is their second time in the Champions League qualifiers, their previous one in 2013/14 ending in the third qualifying round. They are now W2 D1 L3 in their last six European games. They have won two of their last eight away European games.
This should be routine enough for Celtic, especially at home. They surely have to make the most of this draw. Even though they didn’t get on in the first qualifying round, there’s probably enough here to back a Celtic to win to nil option.

Celtic are undefeated in 13 home UEFA qualifiers so that is a positive start to kick things off with for them. In that spell, they are W11 D3 in such fixtures at Celtic Park. The Hoops did concede the first goal of the first leg of this tie but fought their way back to rack up the away goals in a 3-1 win. Celtic responded with goals from Michael Johnston, Odsonne Edouard and Scott Sinclar, who put the icing on the cake five minutes from time. Celtic handled themselves pretty well in what was an intimidating atmosphere. Falling behind looked to actually help them settle into their groove a bit. In last year’s first qualifying round Celtic collected a 6-0 aggregate win over FC Alashkert. They went on to bow out in the third qualifying round to AEK Athens.
The first leg of this tie was the first meeting between the two clubs
Sarajevo will have been pretty happy with their start in the first fifteen minutes of the match. That was when they were at their best, but when they conceded the equaliser it was when the tide turned. They simply sat back and looked to play on the counter-attack. This is their first appearance in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League since 2015 when they lost in the second qualifying round against Lech Poznan 3-0 on aggregate. Last season they started their European campaign in the first qualifying round of the Europa League. They beat Banants but then in the second qualifying road they lost 10-2 on aggregate against Atalanta. The loser of the tie will go to the Europa League third qualifying round. No Bosnian side have ever managed to reach the group stage of a UEFA competition.
Celtic were comfortable in the end in the first leg and this as a contest should be pretty much over. Sarajevo were not a threat after the first fifteen minutes of the match and it should get a bit more difficult for them in Glasgow. Celtic to win to nil.
