Benin managed to extend their stay at the Africa Cup of Nations with a penalty shoot-out success over Morocco in the last round. That sets them up with another tough task as they go up against Senegal. The Senegalese snaked past Uganda in their round of sixteen tie and they are strong favourites to progress further. An early goal from Liverpool’s Sadio Mane in their round of sixteen tie against Uganda saw Senegal move through to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal are now the front runners for the title. In the group stage, they could only manage a second place finish behind Algeria, losing their big showdown against the Algerians. They were strong favourites to beat Uganda, but it was a tough game that they had in breaking them down at the end of the day.
Sadio Mane is the joint top scorer in the competition with three goals now and he is 6/5 in the anytime goalscorer market* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 8th, 2019 at 8:47 p.m.). Senegal have won six of their seven games played this year (L1). Looking back at their extended form they are W9 L1 in their last ten games. The only loss in that sequence was their group stage game against Algeria. Senegal have taken a total of eight clean sheets in their last ten. They have three in four games at the Cup of Nations. Senegal’s best-ever finish at the Cup of Nations was runners up in 2002.
In the head to head, Senegal are W3 D1 L0
The most recent meeting was a 2017 friendly which Senegal won 4-0
Two of the four previous meetings have been competitive
Senegal are W1 D1 from those two previous competitive fixtures
Benin were heavy underdogs for their round of sixteen tie against Morocco. But they dug in there, actually taking the lead in the fixture. They couldn’t close it out those and the tie ended up going to a shootout which Benin won 4-1. Benin only got out of the group stage as one of the best third-placed teams having finished behind both Ghana and Cameroon in Group F. Benin drew all three of their group stage games, so there has been a theme of them being hard to beat.
Benin are now on a seven-match undefeated streak of form, having drawn each of their last four. So will they be able to come up with a winning touch in this one? Or will they be happy enough to grind it out and take their chances on a penalty shoot-out? Benin were on a six-match scoring streak of form before having come up with just the one goal in their last three games. They have banked three clean sheets in their last six fixtures. Mickale Pote is still their top scorer in the tournament with two goals, which were scored in their opening 2-2 draw against Ghana.
Senegal has the touch of quality about them that should see them get through this fixture. Benin are proving to be a tough side to break down and they deserve some credit because they have been up against strong teams all through this tournament. But the end of the road for them may be here. Senegal to win to nil.

This appears to be a favourable draw for Morocco in the first knockout round of the Africa Cup of Nations 2019. They are carrying good form having won all three of their group stage matches. Following their group win, they take on Benin, who squeezed through as one of the best third-placed teams. The winner of the tie will meet Uganda or Senegal in the quarterfinals. Morocco topped out their group in the first round of action at this year’s tournament. They posted three wins from three. Each of those wins were by a 1-0 scoreline. However, looking a little deeper, two of them were close calls. They got their opening win against Namibia thanks to an 89th-minute own goal. In their final group stage match against South Africa, Morocco got their goal in the 90th minute. So there were late successes in here for them. Their other win was over the Ivory Coast. They weren’t carrying form coming into the tournament so this has been a good response.
Morocco had been D1 L3 in their four games before the start of the tournament. Just one of their last eight games have made it over 1.5 goals. So there’s little to suggest that this is going to be a high-scoring rollercoaster of a game. Five of Morocco’s last six games have been settled by a 1-0 scoreline, three of them in Morocco’s favour. They have made it past the group stage for the first time since their 2004 campaign where they finished as runners up.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two nations
Morocco have won all three previous clashes
Morocco have outscored 13-2 in their three previous games
Their one previous AFCON fixture was in 2004
Benin played out a 2-2 draw in their opening game of the group stage against Ghana. That was something of a surprising point for them really. They followed that up with back to back 0-0 draws against Guinea-Bissau and then Cameroon. So while they have really offered very little in attack, they have been a difficult side to beat. With those three draws from the group stage, they are now on a six-match undefeated streak of form (W3 D3).
They have only lost one of their last eight games, so they are likely to prove a difficult opponent for Morocco. But they are seriously down in the head to head against them. Mickael Pote got both of Benin’s goals against Ghana so he is their top scorer for the tournament. This is just the fourth Africa Cup of Nations appearance for Benin and this is their best run so far, having failed to make it past the group stage in any of their three previous campaign. They are still waiting for their first ever AFCON match win though (D4 L8).
This surely has to be a low scoring game given what these two have churned out so far at the tournament. Morocco are the more likely to come up with the goods and make it through. So a Morocco to win to nil option isn’t a bad look.
