Senegal v Tunisia Africa Cup of Nations Preview, 14th July 5.00pm

This is going to be a tough showdown in the final four for both of these. The pressure is one big-time now with a place in the final at stake. Both of these had tight fixtures in the last round, both of them only got through by a one-goal margin win. Who will find that winning touch? Read our Senegal v Tunisia betting tips for more.

Senegal v Tunisia Betting Odds*

Senegal 21/20
Draw 21/10
Tunisia 3/1
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 12th, 2019 at 7.30 p.m.)

Senegal News and Form

Senegal were second-placed finishers in the group stage to Algeria. Their only loss in the group happened against the Algerians in the battle for top spot. That put them through to a round of sixteen tie against Uganda. They dug out a narrow 1-0 success thanks to one of their star players, Sadio Mane coming up with the only goal of the game. Then it was their fixture against Benin when another of their players from the English Premier League, Everton’s Idrissa Gueye delivered the only goal of the game.

So that is back to back 1-0 wins for them in the competition now. So while it has been fine margins for them, they have been digging out their rewards. Having those extra touches of quality makes a huge difference. Liverpool’s Sadio Mane is their top scorer with three goals in the tournament. It has been some fine form that the Lions of Teranga have put together since October last year. They have won 10 of their last 11 games now. During that extended streak of form, they have picked up a whopping nine clean sheets. It has been just one conceded in their five tournament fixtures.

Senegal v Tunisia Head to Head

The last meeting was at Afcon 2017 when Senegal won 2-0
Both teams have scored in one of the last seven meetings
Just one of the last seven meetings have gone over 2.5 goals
Senegal have won only one of the last eleven against Tunisia

Tunisia News and Form

The Eagles of Carthage had a much more comfortable time of things in their quarter-final tie. They were up against minnows Madagascar, who were the big underdog story of the entire competition. Tunisia romped to a 3-0 win. That was actually their first win of the tournament. They had drawn all three of their group stages games. Then in their round of sixteen tie, they had played out a 1-1 draw with Ghana after Tunisia had conceded in the 92nd minute of the fixture. The Tunisians collected the penalty shoot out win 5-4.

Tunisia are now currently on an eight-match undefeated streak of form (W4 D4). During that spell, they have taken the three clean sheets only, but two of those have come inside their last three games. This is the first time that they have been past the quarter-finals since their successful 2004 campaign. Their top scorer in this tournament with two goals is Youssef Msakni. It has been a strange campaign from them given the amount of draws that they have put up. Will that big quarter-final get them to a better place?

Senegal v Tunisia Tips & Odds

Under 2.5 goals at 1/2
Senegal 1-0 correct score
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 12th, 2019 at 7.30 p.m.)

Who will win – Senegal v Tunisia Predictions

Senegal have some game-changers in their ranks. None better than Sadio Mane and in what is expected to be a tight and tense game that is likely to make a big difference. It will probably be low scoring but Senegal to win by a one-goal margin looks a pretty decent fit.

Algeria v Nigeria Africa Cup of Nations Preview, 14th July 8.00pm

The second semi-final at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations is expected to be a pretty tight affair. Algeria were powerful through the group stage and have really looked quite a strong force to be reckoned with. The Super Eagles made pretty hard work of getting the better of outsiders South Africa in their quarter-final match. Read our Algeria v Nigeria betting tips for more.

Algeria v Nigeria Betting Odds*

Algeria 7/5
Draw 2/1
Nigeria 11/5
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 12th, 2019 at 7.30 p.m.)

Algeria News and Form

Algeria powered their way to three straight wins in the group stage and they didn’t concede a single goal in that run of fixtures either. The Algerians averaged two goals per game in their three group stage games. They kept up their strong form when they hit the round of sixteen when they were up against Guinea. The Desert Foxes ran to a 3-0 win. That moved them ahead to a quarter-final tie against the Ivory Coast. That presented them with their toughest challenge of the campaign so far. Sofiane Feghouli opened the scoring for Algeria but they were pegged back in the second half and Algeria had to book their semi final place via a penalty shoot out.

The Desert Foxes are on an extended streak of undefeated form. They are W8 D3 in their last eleven games. They have suffered just one defeat in their last fourteen, which is highly impressive stuff. The goal that they conceded against the Ivory Coast in the quarterfinals is the only goal that they have shipped at the tournament, so they are not going to give up much. Top scorer for them in this year’s competition is Adam Ounas who has tallied the three goals. They have Riyad Mahrez and Youcef Balaili right behind on two apiece. This is only the second time that Algeria have been to the semi-finals since being crowned champions in 1990.

Algeria v Nigeria Head to Head

The last meeting ended in a 1-1 draw in World Cup 2018 qualifying
Nigeria are W6 D1 L1 against Algeria in the head to head
Niger have won five of the last six meetings
Algeria trail 1-3 in previous Afcon games

Nigeria News and Form

Nigeria will probably have been highly frustrated with themselves after the close of the group stage. That’s because they only managed second place having started as favourites to win it. They were beaten to the punch by Madagascar. In the round of sixteen, they were up against Cameroon, the holders. That was a game which swung back and forth drastically. Nigeria blew a lead and had to end up chasing the game. The Super Eagles got a 3-2 success to put them through to a quarter-final fixture against South Africa.

South Africa started as a fairly hefty outsider for this tournament and were poor through the group stage. But Nigeria made hard work of beating them, taking a 2-1 success in the end. Nigeria’s top scorer is Odion Ighalo with three goals so far. Nigeria have produced a W6 D1 L2 record in their nine games. Each of their last five wins have all been by a one-goal margin. They have failed to pick up a clean sheet in any of their last three played now, which will be a little bit of a concern. Nigeria actually have a good record at the Africa Cup of Nations as they have only failed to finish at least third in three of their past seventeen previous appearances in the Finals.

Algeria v Nigeria Tips & Odds

Algeria to win outright at 7/5
Under 1.5 goals at 6/4
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 12th, 2019 at 7.30 p.m.)

Who will win – Algeria v Nigeria Predictions

Algeria are the ones who are carrying the stronger form without question. The Super Eagles have looked a bit patchy and they don’t look to be a tremendous threat, certainly not in attack. Algeria have nothing to fear here and can collect the victory, likely with a clean sheet in tow as well.

Madagascar News and Form

Few would have seen this run from Madagascar coming. They have lit the tournament up by reaching the quarter-finals. Not bad for a nation in their first-ever AFCON campaign and one that was ranked 107th in the world at the start of the event. They pulled off a shock group win too. They posted a W2 D1 record in their three games in the group stage, coming up big in their final match, a decider for top sport against Nigeria. That was following the draw against Guinea and then a 1-0 win over Burundi.

That was fantastic from them and it gave them a round of sixteen tie against DR Congo. That was a favourable draw for them as the DR Congo had only qualified as one of the best third-placed teams from the group stage. The game ended in a 2-2 draw but Madagascar impressively held their never to win the penalty shootout 4-2. The top scorer for the Barea is Carolus Andriamatsinoro with two. Madagascar are actually only W2 D3 L4 in their last nine games, which is why this run has been so unexpected.

Madagascar v Tunisia Head to Head

The only previous meeting were in the World Cup 2002 qualifiers
Tunisia won both of those games to nil

Tunisia News and Form

It has been a strange tournament from Tunisia, who once again drew a game. They were up against Ghana in the round of sixteen and they looked to be heading to a win. That was until they conceded to the Black Stars in the 92nd minute. So they had to endure a penalty shoot-out in the end, which Tunisia took 5-4. Back in the group stage, Tunisia took a second-place finish behind winner Mali, and the Tunisians drew all three of their games, two of the 1-1 draws. So three of their four games at the tournament have been 1-1 draws (90 minutes).

So the 2004 champions have been grinding. They have actually only suffered three defeats since the end of the World Cup last summer. They are W7 D4 L3 in their last fourteen fixtures played. They are currently on a seven-match undefeated streak of form, drawing each of the last four as mentioned. This failure to have won games is going to likely bother punters as to whether or not they can actually find their winning touch when it matters the most. So far it has not quite been there, and there could be nervy moments in this one for them.

Madagascar are not going to be quaking in their boots at the prospect of facing Tunisia. The Tunisians are the favourites though but they can’t seem to get that winning touch nailed. So it may just be worth having the Madagascar – Draw Double Chance in mind.

Ivory Coast News and Form

The Ivory Coast only finished in second place in the group stage of this year’s Cup of Nations. That was behind Morocco who the Elephants lost to. They took wins over South Africa and Namibia in the group. That sent the Ivory Coast through to the round of sixteen where they were up against Mali. That was a tight game with the Ivory Coast winning 1-0 thanks to a lone goal from Wilfried Zaha. That leaves him as their top scorer in the competition with the two goals.

The Elephants have won four of their last five games played now and during the 2019 calendar year, they are W7 L2 from nine games. The two defeats which they have taken in that sequence of games were both by a 1-0 scoreline. Interestingly in their last four wins, two have been by a 1-0 scoreline and the other two were 4-1 successes. They were the championship winners back in 2015 but fell at the group stage in their defence two years later.

Ivory Coast v Algeria Head to Head

All six previous meetings have gone over 2.5 goals
Ivory Coast are W3 D2 L1 in the head to head against Algeria
Both teams have scored in each of the last five meetings
Ivory Coast are unbeaten in their last four against Algeria (W2 D2)

Algeria News and Form

The Desert Foxes sailed through their round of sixteen tie against Guinea. They romped to a 3-0 success and were pretty much unchallenged there. They had also won Group C of this year’s competition with three straight wins. They scored six unanswered goals in the group stage in their three games, so that is no goal conceded in this campaign from them at all. With Egypt having taken an early tumble, Algeria are right up there as second favourite to win outright.

Algeria have Adam Ounas on three goals for the tournament, making him the joint top scorer. Riyad Mahrez has weighed in with a couple as well. It is really back since the middle of November last year that Algeria have been in hot form. They have peaked just at the right time with having gone W8 D2 in their last ten games. They are currently on a five-match winning streak and they scored at least two goals in four of those five wins. The last time they made it past the quarters was in 1990 when they went on to win.

Ivory Coast v Algeria Tips & Odds

Senegal News and Form

An early goal from Liverpool’s Sadio Mane in their round of sixteen tie against Uganda saw Senegal move through to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal are now the front runners for the title. In the group stage, they could only manage a second place finish behind Algeria, losing their big showdown against the Algerians. They were strong favourites to beat Uganda, but it was a tough game that they had in breaking them down at the end of the day.

Sadio Mane is the joint top scorer in the competition with three goals now and he is 6/5 in the anytime goalscorer market* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 8th, 2019 at 8:47 p.m.). Senegal have won six of their seven games played this year (L1). Looking back at their extended form they are W9 L1 in their last ten games. The only loss in that sequence was their group stage game against Algeria. Senegal have taken a total of eight clean sheets in their last ten. They have three in four games at the Cup of Nations. Senegal’s best-ever finish at the Cup of Nations was runners up in 2002.

Senegal v Benin Head to Head

In the head to head, Senegal are W3 D1 L0
The most recent meeting was a 2017 friendly which Senegal won 4-0
Two of the four previous meetings have been competitive
Senegal are W1 D1 from those two previous competitive fixtures

Benin News and Form

Benin were heavy underdogs for their round of sixteen tie against Morocco. But they dug in there, actually taking the lead in the fixture. They couldn’t close it out those and the tie ended up going to a shootout which Benin won 4-1. Benin only got out of the group stage as one of the best third-placed teams having finished behind both Ghana and Cameroon in Group F. Benin drew all three of their group stage games, so there has been a theme of them being hard to beat.

Benin are now on a seven-match undefeated streak of form, having drawn each of their last four. So will they be able to come up with a winning touch in this one? Or will they be happy enough to grind it out and take their chances on a penalty shoot-out? Benin were on a six-match scoring streak of form before having come up with just the one goal in their last three games. They have banked three clean sheets in their last six fixtures. Mickale Pote is still their top scorer in the tournament with two goals, which were scored in their opening 2-2 draw against Ghana.

Senegal has the touch of quality about them that should see them get through this fixture. Nigeria News and Form

The Super Eagles had a real ding-dong battle with Cameroon in the round of sixteen. Nigeria took the lead early in the game, but then into the second half were chasing the game at 2-1 down. But they produced the firepower to get themselves back in front to hold out for a 3-2 success. So that was a big scalp claimed by Nigeria in having knocked out the reigning champions. Back in the group stage Nigeria had only managed to finish second to the surprise package that is Madagascar. Nigeria had lost against them 2-0 in a top-spot showdown.

Nigeria are W5 D1 L2 in their eight games played this year. They have picked up a total of four clean sheets in that sequence of games. The two defeats which they have suffered in that run have been in their last five played though, a friendly against Senegal and then the group stage loss against Madagascar. Just two of their 2019 fixtures have now made it over 2.5 goals so it was surprising that their game against Cameroon went so high. The concern for the Super Eagles though is that is back to back games in which they have conceded two goals. Odion Ighalo is their top scorer in this tournament with three goals.

Nigeria v South Africa Head to Head

These two were in the same qualification group for AFCON 2019
South Africa were W1 D1 against Nigeria in those qualifiers
Four of the last five meetings have been drawn
Nigeria are W6 D4 L2 in the overall had to head with South Africa

South Africa News and Form

South Africa set the cat amongst the pigeons in their round of sixteen tie against Egypt. They came up with a 1-0 win over the Egyptians, their goal coming from Thembinkosi Lorch five minutes from time. That was a major upset after the South Africans had only finished third in their group. They had finished behind Morocco and the Ivory Coast, with their three points, which were enough to get them to the knockouts coming in a win over Namibia.

South Africa have posted figures of W3 D1 L2 in their six fixtures during the 2019 calendar year. All three of their wins in that sequence were by one goal margin. The two defeats were 1-0 reverses. Just two of South Africa’s last eleven games have made it over 2.5 goals now. Both teams have scored in just three of South Africa’s last eleven fixtures. What do the Bafana Bafana have up their sleeve? Can they come up with something special to take down Super Eagles? Clearly, they aren’t going to care about their underdog status.

Ghana News and Form

Ghana were thwarted in their opening group stage game by Benin, the fixture playing out to a 2-2 draw. After a 0-0 draw against Cameroon in the group’s feature match, it left Ghana with a bit of work to do to get to the top spot in the final round of matches. With Cameroon failing to beat Benin in their final game, Ghana delivered a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau to top the table in the head to head over the Cameroonians. Jordan Ayew is their top scorer at the tournament with two goals in three games.

The Black Stars might have hoped for a slightly easier round of sixteen tie though. Their record in recent Africa Cup of Nations tournaments has been good. They have finished in the top four in each of the last six editions now, but none of those campaigns yielded a title. They are four-time winners of the tournament, but their last success was all the way back in 1982. Ghana have suffered just one defeat in their last eight games, winning four of those. They have been tight at the back with three clean sheets in their last four games played now.

Ghana v Tunisia Head to Head

Ghana took a 4-2 win over Tunisia in 2013, their most recent meeting
It is a W5 D2 L1 record that Ghana have over Tunisia
Tunisia are winless in three against the Black Stars
Both teams have scored in five of the previous eight meetings

Tunisia News and Form

Tunisia will have been expecting a bit of a higher return than what they managed in the group stage. They played out three straight drawn matches. Their first two against Angola and Mali were 1-1 draws, while they could only close out with a really disappointing 0-0 draw against Mauritania. So it hasn’t been wonderful stuff from the Eagles of Carthage at all. They have been to the quarterfinals in three of their last four Africa Cup of Nations appearances though.

Their current form suggests that they are going to be in this tie. They are undefeated in their last six games losing just one of their last eight. Since the beginning of September last year, Tunisia are W7 D3 L3 but only one of those three defeats were in competitive fixtures. Tunisia’s 0-0 draw against Mauritania saw them take their first clean sheet in five. It also saw them have a five-match scoring streak snapped.

Mali News and Form

Mali were sound and secure in the group stage. They took good wins over Mauritania and Angola, while they held their own against Tunisia in a draw. Those seven points saw them win their group by a comfortable margin. Mali took back to back third place finishes at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012 and 2013 but then were knocked out at the group stage in the previous two. So this is a good step forward for them.

Mali’s form is inconsistent, but they are a tough side to beat. They are W5 D4 L2 in their last eleven games and the two defeats in that sequence were one-goal margin losses against Senegal and Algeria, two of the stronger teams around. Mali’s win over Angola in their third group stage game is their only clean sheet in their last six, which will be a little bit of a concern for them.

Mali v Ivory Coast Head to Head

Ivory Coast earned four points from World Cup 2018 qualifiers against Mali
The Elephants are W11 D4 L2 in the head to head against Mali
Just one of the last six meetings have gone over 2.5 goals
Things are even at one each and two draws in the last four meetings

Ivory Coast News and Form

While they managed to take wins over South Africa and Namibia in the group stage, the Ivory Coast missed out on top spot. That was because of their 1-0 loss against Morocco in the group’s heavyweight showdown. That only secured them second place in the group. Still, that is progress because they failed to get past the group stage in their title defence at the 2017 tournament. This is not the easiest of round of sixteen ties for them though.

The Ivory Coast have lost just two games since September last year. They are W8 D2 L2 in the twelve matches in that sequence of games. They have scoring power in them, having scored at least three goals in four of their last eight fixtures. It’s just that they don’t always look the most secure at the back. They have picked up the one clean sheet in their last six games now. Aston Villa’s Jonathan Kodjia and Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha have both gotten on the scoresheet in this tournament.

Algeria News and Form

There were no troubles for Algeria in their group stage campaign. They opened with a 2-0 win over Kenya, took out Senegal 1-0 in what was on paper their toughest match, before easing to a big win over Tanzania. That is six unanswered goals which they came up with in their group stage campaign. So it all came up roses for them. Their top scorer in the tournament after the three games is Adam Ounas with two goals.

Former Leicester City players Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani have both netted a goal each. Alergia are currently on a four-match winning streak at the moment and they are undefeated in their last nine now (W7 D2). They have lost just one of their last twelve, so they are a major force. They have picked up four clean sheets in their last six games and they are currently on a nine-match scoring streak. So they will be fully expected to make progress through this tie.

Algeria v Guinea Head to Head

Algeria beat Guinea 2-1 in June 2017 in a friendly.
Guinea are W2 D2 L1 in their five previous games against Algeria
Guinea have only failed to score in one of their previous five against Algeria
The last two meetings have both gone over 2.5 goals

Guinea News and Form

Guinea, who had no form behind them coming into the tournament, had some struggles in the group stage. They picked up a point in their opening game against Madagascar, before losing narrowly to Nigeria. It was then three points which they earned from their final group stage game, thanks to a 2-0 success over Burundi. That win snapped a long eight-match winless streak of form that they had been on (D4 L4).

Guinea have scored in three of their last four games now, so that is some kind of positive that they can look at. Their win over Burundi gave them their first clean sheet in six though. Guinea failed to qualify for the 2017 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations but they have been to the quarterfinals in four of their last five appearances in the tournament. Can they pull off a big upset and make it back to the final eight?

Madagascar News and Form

So it has been some debut by Madagascar. They collected seven points in their group stage campaign. They started with an exciting 2-2 draw with Guinea before collecting a 1-0 success over Burundi. So there was some huge pressure on them in their final match, a battle for top spot against Nigeria. Madagascar more than held their nerve as they produced a 2-0 success to win top spot. Can they take this fantastic journey a step further?

They were well out of form heading into the tournament as well. Madagascar had failed to win in six games (D2 L4) prior to the start of the competition. So they have delivered when it has mattered most. They reached their first ever AFCON finals with a second place finish in their qualification group. They were ranked 108th in the world at the start of the competition. Their top scorer in the tournament with two goals so far is Carolus Andriamatsinoro.

Madagascar v DR Congo Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two nations
DR Congo are W1 D1 in the head to head against Madagascar
Their most recent meeting was in 2016 which DR Congo won 6-1

DR Congo News and Form

The DR Congo had more of a struggle through their group stage campaign. They were on the back foot early after an opening 2-0 loss against Uganda. They then fell to the same scoreline against Egypt. But they found a way through with a big win over Zimbabwe in their final fixture, those three points giving them a berth as one of the best third-place finishers. Their win over Zimbabwe snapped a four-match winless streak of form.

The DR Congo have managed to win just two of their last ten fixtures now (D5 L3) so they haven’t been tearing it up. They have failed to score in three of their last five games as well. DR Congo made the quarterfinals in the last edition of the tournament which was after finishing third in the edition prior to that. While the group stage wasn’t a huge success for them, they have to recognise that there were worse draws that they could have gotten for the round of sixteen.
