Sunderland v Man City Betting Preview
Two sides with very different targets on their horizons. City managed to close the gap a little bit on leaders Man United with a late win over Reading on the weekend, while Sunderland are nervously looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone. But Sunderland have started to pull out wins, two in their last three, so can they show some more fight and halt Manchester City’s progress towards the defence of their league title? City took a 3-0 home win over the Black Cats earlier in the season, and some big Christmas cheer would come from a repeat.

Sunderland v Man City Recommended Bet:
After a miserable run of form with just one win in ten matches, Sunderland have started to make more of an impact, taking two wins in their last three games. Before the Black Cats fans start getting too optimistic, the wins came against Reading and Southampton, not the toughest opponents. Sandwiched in between those two wins was a heavy 3-1 defeat against Manchester United. Sunderland were also defeated by the same scoreline against Chelsea as well at the start of December, so while they have converted against sides below them, they have struggled against quality sides. After going on a run of nine straight defeats against City, Sunderland have won two and lost two of the last six, so a definite improvement there. The Stadium of Light, where Sunderland are usually so strong, hasn’t seen very many wins lately. The Black Cats have scored just two wins out of their last 12 Premier League home matches (W2 D6 L4). Sunderland have scored at a rate of just over a goal per game at home this season, conceding just a little bit above that figure as well. 62% of their home games have gone under 2.5 goals, so they aren’t defensively bad, they just lack a threat going forward. They have picked up just one home win in their last six and despite showing some progress with a couple of wins in December already, they may have a hard afternoon against City, even though the league champions aren’t quite on top of their game. The last two home fixtures for Sunderland against City in the league have ended in 1-0 wins for the Black Cats, both winners coming in injury time..
Sunderland took four points off City last season in the league and Roberto Mancini hasn’t actually managed to get a win at the Stadium of Light in three attempts. City have shown tremendous resilience this season and they may need more of that again on Boxing Day. You get the feeling that if City start scoring early goals, it won’t take much for them to get their swagger back. It needed a last minute goal from Gareth Barry of all people to secure a home win against Reading on the weekend and have scored in the final 15 minutes of eleven of their Premier League matches this season (a league high). There has been a goal scored in the final five minutes of five of the last six clashes between City and Sunderland too, both of Sunderland’s last home wins over City coming courtesy of injury time winners. Man City have won seven and lost none of their last 11 Premier League away games, so you should expect them to at least get a point out of this one. The Citizens haven’t lost any of their last five Boxing Day fixtures either. City just seem to be making things harder for themselves than things should be. Early goals would make all the difference to their season it really would. Because of the resistance that Sunderland will put up,combined with the late goal scenarios that City seem to be enjoying this season, a Draw/Man City Half Time/Full Time bet is good value at 3/1 with online bookmaker Bet365 may pan out.
