Sunderland v Aston Villa Prediction & Betting Tips – 6th March 20185th March 2018 / lee
Sunderland v Aston Villa Championship, 6th March 7.45pm
There is a big game at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night as Sunderland play host to Aston Villa in the Championship. The Villains are on the prowl for promotion back up to the top flight, starting the game in third place. Things haven’t gone quite so well for Sunderland though this season with the Black Cats four points adrift of safety at the foot of the table. How badly they need to find a win from somewhere.
Sunderland v Aston Villa Betting Odds*
Aston Villa 21/20, Draw 5/2, Sunderland 3/1* (Betting Odds taken at 03:32 a.m. on March 5th, 2018)
Sunderland News and Form
The Black Cats are stuck at the bottom of the Championship table, four points from safety and having played a game more than most of those immediately above them. Troubled times are afoot then, but they have drawn their last two outings against Middlesbrough and Millwall in the league. Their last win in the second tier against Hull back on January 20th, their only win in their last ten games (D3 L6). The Mackems are without a win any of their last three league home games now (D1 L2) and both defeats in that sequence were by a 2-0 scoreline. In the bet365 correct score market, an Aston Villa 2-0 is at 15/2 with the shortest priced option being the 1-1 draw at 11/2* (Betting Odds taken at 03:32 a.m. on March 5th, 2018). The Black Cats have only managed two home victories all season (D6 L9) in the league so punters will obviously have a pretty hard time trusting them. Sunderland are averaging a goal per game at home this season while they have managed a clean sheet in just 12% of their home fixture. They have conceded at least two goals in each of their last three league home games.
Aston Villa News and Form
With a fine W8 D1 L1 record in their last ten league games, Aston Villa are in the automatic promotion hunt. They got the weekend off so will be well rested, after their game against QPR was postponed because of the weather. Away from home this season in the Championship, Aston Villa have recorded a W8 D3 L6 season on their travels and have won four of their last five out on the road (L1). So everything is going well for them and three of their last four wins away from Villa Park have been by a 1-0 scoreline. The Villains have averaged 1.3 goals per game on their travels and they have been level at half time in nine of their road games (seven of them 0-0 half time score lines). With Sunderland having been level at half time in eight home games, then a half-time draw at Bet365 should have good appeal. 61% of the goals that Villa have conceded on the road have come in the second half of matches. Only the current top two in the league have a better defensive record than Villa do in the Championship this season and they are clearly the stronger option of the two in the northeast on Tuesday.
Sunderland v Aston Villa Head to Head
Villa collected a 2-1 home win over Sunderland back November in what was their first league meeting outside of the Premier League since the 1990/91 old English Division 1. Over the last five meetings, Aston Villa are W2 D2 L1 against the Mackems so they are slightly ahead. The last meeting at the Stadium of Light was in the 2016 Premier League which Sunderland won 3-1 but Sunderland are just W1 D1 L3 in their last five on home soil against Villa.
Who will win – Sunderland v Aston Villa Predictions
Sunderland have such a poor track record this season and have lost three of their last four at home against Villa, two of those three defeats by a 1-0 scoreline. That scoreline option for Villa looks pretty favourable again for this midweek meetup.
