Premier League 2018/19 Top Goalscorer Odds & Preview21st July 2018 / lee
Everybody once again starts from zero in the Premier League Golden Boot race and looking ahead to the new 2018/19 season we see the familiar faces at the head of the market. Really there doesn’t appear to be any world class strikers heading to the Premier League to shake up the regular order either unless rumours about Man Utd and Chelsea’s interest Robert Lewandowski are true.
Harry Kane failed to make it three Golden Boot titles on the bounce last term as he was beaten to the punch by Liverpool’s scoring sensation Mo Salah. The Egyptian rattled off 32 goals in his campaign and really came out of the blue to upset the betting markets. The question now will be of course, will he be able to replicate that stunning season? There will be more pressure on him this season now as defenders will have his number.
So with the big kick-off for the new season coming in August, here we take a preview of the Premier League 2018/19 Top Goalscorer market at bet365.

Harry Kane is Mr Consistent and he does have that proven track record of scoring in the English top flight something that Salah doesn’t have. In the last three seasons, he has improved his tally each time, going from 25 to 29 to 30 goals. He had a great summer as well after winning the World Cup Golden Boot and that will fill him with more confidence. He did look as if he needed a big rest after the World Cup though to get back fresh. He is just one of the best strikers in the world, hands down. He is pretty much as complete of a finisher as you can expect to get. Another heavy scoring season with Spurs and they are really going to have trouble holding on to him and appeals at 11/4* (betting odds taken on July 20th 2018 at 9:22 pm).
So 32 goals in 36 appearances for Mo Salah after his arrival at Liverpool in the Premier League last term. It was a return that was just never predicted at all. He just turned up and produced something special, but does he have it in him to live up to the high bar that he set for himself? His Champions League Final and World Cup were both ruined by injury, so Liverpool will be nursing him back to health over the summer. He is going to thrive again in a Liverpool side that likes to attack but this is now a tricky sophomore year for him in a way after that breakout return that he produced last season. With defenders now understanding what they are facing in him, the season will likely be a bit more difficult for Salah than it was last term. It’s not an easy thing to win back to back Golden Boots either as only Harry Kane, Robin van Persie and Thierry Henry had done it in back to back years since the turn of the century.
Pierre Emerick Aubameyang
The Arsenal man had a very good arrival in England, despite being part of a Gunners setup that was falling apart at the time. He may have gone unnoticed just because of how deflating Arsenal’s season was overall. But Aubameyang netted 10 goals in 13 games for Arsenal in the top flight at the back end of last season and that is a glimpse of the scoring power of the man. He has a phenomenal scoring record at club level and now with a fresh start under a new boss and in an Arsenal set up that should be totally rejuvenated, this could be a big season ahead for the Gabon international. He has gotten a lot of pre-season backing and is now at 7/1 odds* (betting odds taken on July 20th 2018 at 9:22 pm). He’s a very interesting candidate.
Real Madrid are reportedly interested in getting Sergio Aguero for next season. But if he sticks around at City then he is going to have plenty of chances to be in among the goals once more. He is one of the best finishers in the business and he will only improve whatever side he ends up in. He was only third behind Kane and Salah in last year’s scoring and that shows how vital he is to Man City’s cause. He won the Golden Boot back in the 2014/15 season and has the potential to break records, but would he have enough to topple Kane for example, because he was a long way back of the Tottenham man last season, even playing in the best side in the country.
Lukaku’s chances of walking away with the Golden boot is probably being hampered by where he is at. He is not in the most attack-minded set up of the sides pushing for Premier League success this season. He is a big physical threat and can go on a hot streak. He didn’t have a bad summer at the World cup, but even there, he went from brilliant to anonymous in a flash. He will also be running up the goals but it’s debatable that in his more conservative environment, whether he could do enough on his own to lift the Golden Boot.
Gabriel Jesus looks a bit of an enigma. The youngster clearly has the talent but you just feel that he is waiting to break through to the next level. He got thirteen Premier League goals to his name last season and provides a great spark of energy and he looks a real nuisance to defences in the six-yard box. He needs to now really get on and start racking up the goals more because he could well be the future of Man City. He’s in the right place to get the goals, but is he ready to take it to the next level? He was spearheading Brazil’s attack at the World Cup and couldn’t deliver the goods.
This could be an important season for Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette after having a rough time of this last season. He did finish in the top ten of goalscorers in the league but it wasn’t enough from him and the Frenchman lacked confidence. It will be interesting to see if he can flourish alongside Aubameyang or play second fiddle to him. Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata looked out of place in the Premier League. He didn’t really look up for the physical fight of things and was another who badly lacked confidence. He’s another who needs a big season.
Alexis Sanchez looked a shadow of himself following his move to Manchester United and he is not going to get up to great goal scoring heights probably. He’s not got as much freedom as he had an Arsenal that’s for sure. Eden Hazard is another player who has fantastic goal scoring potential but isn’t likely to have a season where he beats out and out strikers. Jamie Vardy got himself a good twenty-goal haul last season for Leicester. Shame he couldn’t bring anything to the table at the World Cup but is reliable enough to make a run at a top-five finish in the Golden Boot market again, but unlikely to win it.
We are holding reservations about Mo Salah until he is up and running for the season. It is going to be a tough test of character for him to try and live up to his own standards of last season. Harry Kane is the proven goalscorer in the league and the best in the business at the moment and we can’t argue with his favourite label.
The other option we like is Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. This is a goal scoring machine and he is great value at 7/1 odds* (betting odds taken on July 20th 2018 at 9:22 pm) before he potentially shortens more. We got a great glimpse of what he is capable off with his form at the back end of last season. Imagine what he can do from the get-go.
