(Full time: 3:3 – goals: Ronaldo 4´, 44´, 88´ – Costa 24´, 55´ Nacho 58´)

This is one of the feature matches of the first round of action from the 2018 World Cup as it pits reigning European champions Portugal against former World Cup winners Spain. The Iberian rivals are still expected to go on and reach the knockout phase of the competition regardless of the result in this fixture. But which of them will be able to come out of the starting gate stronger in what it is probably going to be the group decider?

Portugal v Spain Betting Tips

Portugal who are the reigning European champions aren’t carrying great form forward to the 2018 World Cup. They have won just two of their last six games but losing just one in that sequence which was against the Netherlands back in March. In their final warm-up match ahead of the tournament they collected a 3-0 win over Algeria and that actually improves their defensive record to back-to-back clean sheets in their last two fixtures. They hadn’t collected one in any of their previous four. It is unlikely that Portugal will see much of the ball in this fixture and they aren’t particularly attack-minded side anyway so under 2.5 goals at bet365 is at 4/7 odds* (Betting Odds taken from June 10th, 2018 at 10:58 p.m.).

In their successful Euro 2016 campaign Portugal drew six of their seven matches (90 minutes). Portugal’s campaign in the 2018 World Cup group stage will get much easier after this as they have to then go up against Morocco and Iran so qualification to the knockout phase is still a strong likelihood, even if they were to suffer a defeat in this opener against the Iberian rivals. Portugal still are heavily reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo and he is at 15/8 odds* (Betting Odds taken from June 10th, 2018 at 10:58 p.m.) in the bet365 anytime goalscorer market. There should not be any panic in the Portuguese camp they were to lose but not doing so would boost their confidence.

Spain collected a late win over Tunisia on the weekend in their final warm-up match ahead of the tournament. That completed the sequence of remaining undefeated since their Euro 2016 exit right through to the start of the 2018 World Cup. They are favourites to win this opening fixture there and so that undefeated streak could well continue. The Red Fury look so strong having packed their midfield with an abundance of creative talent which again could leave them a little short up top. So they will be heavily reliant on Diego Costa to get under the skin of opposing defences. Costa is the 13/8 odds favourite* (Betting Odds taken from June 10th, 2018 at 10:58 p.m.) in the bet365 anytime goalscorer market.

Four years ago in World Cup title defence Spain lost their opening two fixtures, getting heavily embarrassed by the Netherlands in their opener. This is another tricky opener for the Spaniards four years on but they look far better equipped to handle the situation this time around and certainly have form behind them. Spain are undefeated in four matches played in 2018 winning two and drawing two of those. In the bet365 correct score market, Spain 1-0 result is the 9/2 odds favourite option and the red fury are 15/8 odds* (Betting Odds taken from June 10th, 2018 at 10:58 p.m.) to win to nil.

Portugal v Spain Head to Head

There is plenty of history between these two and Spain are dominating the head-to-head 16-6 with 13 drawn fixtures in between. The last time they met was in the 2012 European Championships with a 0-0 draw produced before Spain won the subsequent penalty shootout. Things are actually even between them with two wins each and a draw in their last five meetings and there is a trend going as both teams have NOT scored in each of the last five contests.

Who will win – Portugal v Spain Predictions

Spain may be a little nervous about this one after losing so heavily to the Netherlands in their 2014 World Cup opener but they are much better and much stronger than they were four years ago. They are in confident form and are likely to collect a victory but it may not be more than by a one-goal margin.
