England v Croatia Preview- July 11th, 2018 at 7 pm

England are on the brink of creating some more history for themselves. One more win puts them in just their second ever World Cup Final. The Three Lions have ridden their wave of youthful enthusiasm so well at Russia 2018, overcoming hurdles and challenges along the way. That has gelled them together and has created self-belief. Can they take this fantastic journey one step further by taking down Croatia and reaching the World Cup Final? The odds on England to win against Croatia sees the Three Lions once against going as favourites for a knockout stage fixture as they are 11/8 at bet365 to win this* (betting odds were taken from July 9th, 2018 at 10:52 pm).

England are favourites then to win this semi-final which takes place on Wednesday. This is it then, the chance for this young side to reach the World Cup finals. There has just been such a feel-good factor about England at this tournament. They opened with a dramatic late win against Tunisia in stoppage time, but it was a game in which England set out their intent by getting on the front foot right from the off. But they overcame that challenge of breaking down a side who pretty much just parked the bus for 90 minutes.

Then there was another challenge for them as they went up against Panama. England were heavy favourites to win that game, but too often in recent history, we have seen England fail to really impress against minnows. This wasn’t one of those times as England put six goals past the Central Americans. After their meaningless game against Belgium in the final round of group stage matches, England, as expected found themselves in the knockout phase.

England overcoming challenges

The nice thing to see is just how adaptable England have been to different situations. They got a really tough physical game against Colombia in the round of sixteen but the young England side held their cool for the large part. Even after the hammer blow of conceding an equaliser deep into stoppage time, their heads didn’t drop. They even went and created history by producing England’s first ever World Cup penalty shoot-out success.

Then in the quarter finals, they were favourites to prevail against Sweden. The Swedes had been very strong defensively and questions were being asked of whether England had the ability to break down such a tough side. England commanded large parts of the game, took their chances in a 2-0 win and set the optimism and belief among England supporters to high. Things have fallen into place, the way they have overcome different challenges and the way that the draw has opened up for them.

England are 8/13 at bet365 To Qualify* (betting odds were taken from July 9th, 2018 at 10:52 pm) and one advantage that they could have is in energy levels against Croatia. England are a much younger side, they played earlier on the weekend than Croatia did, and they saw Croatia have to go through another period of extra time. So if this semi-final, which will probably be tight, makes it beyond 90 minutes then you imagine that it will play more into England’s hands than Croatia’s.

England strengths

England have scored from 10 of their last thirteen shots on target at the World Cup. That is some precision finishing from them. Of course, the bulk of their chances have been from set pieces but that really doesn’t matter. It is part of the game and clearly something that England have been working on. That is a huge strength that they have and it may well come into play in this one. It could once again be a difference maker for the Three Lions.

Harry Kane has chipped in with six of England’s eleven goals at the tournament so far and he is at 10/3 in the First Goalscorer market* (betting odds were taken from July 9th, 2018 at 10:52 pm). The Three Lions may need to get him in the game a bit more than they managed to against Sweden as their captain could be the key to unlocking the Croatian defence. England do possess a tremendous amount of pace going forward and they have to utilise that against this Croatian side which isn’t the quickest.

Croatia tiring but still a threat

Croatia will be the most difficult opponent that England have faced at this tournament. Without a doubt. The Croats are more technically gifted than England and they do possess a big weapon that England don’t have. The creative midfield brilliance of Luka Modric who has produced a fantastic tournament for his country. England will definitely have to watch him as well as their wide danger man Ivan Perisic who will prove to be a handful for England’s right back Kieran Trippier.

So Croatia have their strengths. They have scored at least two goals in five of their last six games (W4 D2 over 90 minutes). But on the other side of that, they have kept just the one clean sheet in total in their last three. Croatia were always going to be a threat in this tournament and they have certainly lived up to that billing. They have a superb midfield, one of the best at the 2018 World Cup and that is going to be a factor in them staying in this game. But with penalty shootouts needed in both of their knockout stage matches, they certainly haven’t looked as good in the knockout stage as they did in the group stage.

Head to Head

There have been some pretty interesting meetings between Croatia and England before as five of the previous seven clashes have produced at least four goals. Each of the last three between these two have produced at least five goals. Both teams have scored in all but two of those seven previous meetings. England are 4-2 up in the head to head with the one drawn game. Their most recent meetings were during 2010 World Cup qualifying with England taking big wins in both of those. Their one previous meeting at a major tournament was at Euro 2004 which England won 4-2.

England v Croatia Prediction

The odds on England to win against Croatia are favourable for the Three Lions at 11/8* (betting odds were taken from July 9th, 2018 at 10:52 pm) and we are backing them to deliver on that favouritism. The first half is probably going to be tight as they feel each other out and look for most chances to come from set plays. But as this game wears on, the extra pace and energy of England could make all of the difference. Our prediction for the England v Croatia game is that the Three Lions make it to the Final.
