Manchester United v Olympiakos Champions League Prediction and Preview19th December 2013 / lee
The Red Devils secured just about the easiest draw which they could have gotten for the round of sixteen in the UEFA Champions League as Man Utd v Olympiakos Champions League betting is up. For David Moyes, he will be happy enough with that, as it presents a wonderful opportunity for them to progress. This is of course his first venture into the Champions League and he kind of came through with flying colours in the group stage.
United posted four wins and two draws in their Champions League group to put their Premier League troubles behind them. The Red Devils scored at an average of two goals per game in the group and only conceded three goals. What was most impressive about their group stage progress is the way that they took Bayern Leverkusen apart both at home and away. Olympiakos should not pose them too many problems over the course of the two legs.
The first leg is on Tuesday, February 25th, 2014 out in Greece. United start away as they are the seeded team from winning their group. However, there is some great value in backing them to take the win at a price of 21/20 with online betting site Bet365. Olympiakos are trading at a price of 5/2 to win that first leg, so given the odds presented, there should be a strong backing for him. The two clubs have actually met before in the Champions League and all four of the matches involved in those previous meetings went the way of United. In the 2001/02 edition the Red Devils posted a 2-0 away win and followed that up with a 3-0 triumph back at Old Trafford. They were drawn against each other the very next season and United won 4-0 at home and then edged out a 3-2 win back in Greece.
Really, United couldn’t have been presented with an easier task for the round of sixteen. There shouldn’t be anything to trouble them. Granted the Greeks can be a really stubborn side. They qualified in second place behind Paris St Germain in their group. Their two defeats in the group came against the Parisians, and in their other four matches played, they did only concede two goals. They are well organised and generally don’t give much away, but in general they will be a long way short of having the quality to make a big impact in the game. But they don’t have a lot of firepower in them and when you see Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie at the top of the goalscorer markets, then it’s easy to see United getting through this without too much trouble.
