Man Utd v Sevilla Match Preview and Predictions & Betting Odds – 13th March 201812th March 2018 / Julian
After a 0-0 draw in Spain, the Man Utd v Sevilla tie rests on a knife edge for the second leg encounter at Old Trafford.
David De Gea was the clear man of the match in Seville keeping attempts from Joaquin Correa and Steven N’Zonzi out, before denying Luis Muriel with a superb reflex save. Muriel’s header in the first half had looked certain to hit the back of the net and were it not for the lightning fast reactions of the Spanish goalkeeper, it surely would.
It was a game in which United seemed to hardly get started and yet, thanks to the man between the posts, Sevilla could get no return from their goal threat. De Gea is certainly getting a lot of practice at the moment, thanks to the men in red shirts in front of him. Chris Smalling in particular is generously giving De Gea plenty of time with the ball.
Looking ahead to the tie on Tuesday, the question will be whether Jose Mourinho goes with Paul Pogba for this second leg. The £89million signing didn’t start in the first leg but came on in the 17th minute thanks to an injury sustained by Ander Herrera. When Pogba did come on, he offered little to talk about.
Mourinho didn’t want to talk about Pogba at all in fact, and instead wished to focus on breakthrough player Scott McTominay. Although the youngster did little of note, what he did was as instructed, and he seems to have a taste for the big game. Will the Portuguese manager give him the nod again on Tuesday? With Herrera injured, he has every chance.
Bookmakers William Hill have Man Utd priced at 7/10 to win, Sevilla are priced at 7/2 and the draw is 13/5.
Champions League Record
Three times Champion League champions, Man Utd have had a respectable performance in the competition this year, winning five out of seven matches, drawing one and losing one. Sevilla meanwhile, have played more games this year as they had to qualify for the competition against Istanbul Başakşehir. Of their 9 games played, Sevilla have won three, drawn five and lost one.
Sevilla’s biggest win in the competition came against Maribor in a home victory of 3-0, while Man Utd swept aside CSKA Moscow in Moscow by 4-1. As far as losses in the competition go this year, Man Utd’s worst defeat came away to Basel, when a solitary goal was the difference between the teams. Sevilla’s worst performance came against a rampant Spartak Moscow when the Spanish side conceded five goals to lose 5-1. Quite clearly it is the Manchester team which has both the better form and pedigree in the competition.

Man Utd have goal threats all over the park, but Romelu Lukaku is the main man at Old Trafford these days. Spells of play between the two have shown great promise, no more so than against Chelsea when the link up play began to click. If the two can get lock in step then expect to see goals from the Belgian. So far the former Everton player has scored 23 goals in all competitions and views himself as the soldier of the Manchester team. Alexis Sanchez hasn’t yet quite found form for the Red Devils, so whether he plays is another matter.
In Sevilla colours Frenchman Wissam Ben Yedder poses the greatest threat with 17 goals across all competitions. Liverpool fans will remember him as the man who put two past them in the competition this year and Sevilla fans know that half of all goals in their team come from this one man alone. Man Utd fans will also be mindful of Luis Muriel who, were it not for De Gea, would have already made this return leg a far greater challenge.
Man Utd to win: The mission statement for Manchester United is a clear one. Win and get through to the next stage of the Champions League. It’s that simple.
