A late rally from Scotland in their opening match aginast England wasn’t enough to see them avoid defeat. They will now be looking for something out of this challenge against Japan. Japan Women News and Form

Japan has been doing a wonderful thing over the last twelve months, which is fully invest in their young players. We saw it at the SheBelievesCup earlier this year when their young team lost in the Final against England. In their World Cup opener against Argentina, they were on top for pretty much the entire game but just couldn’t find that finishing touch against the South Americans. Japan will look at that as points lost.

But they are the favourites for this one against Scotland now. Because of them largely just having played their youth, it is hard to get a real read on their form. On paper, it does not look great with a D3 L2 record in their last five played now. In their final four games before the start of the World Cup, they faced France, Germany, Spain and England in a tough run of fixtures and aside from the SheBelievesCup Final, and they were not embarrassed against any of them. They also played out a 2-2 draw with the USA at that SheBelievesCup tournament.

Scotland Women News and Form

Scotland put on a brave show against England in their opener, falling 2-0 down at half time but they rallied to come back hard at the Lionesses and struck a response in the 79th minute through Claire Emslie. They had their moments in the game did Scotland and there was enough there to suggest that they can seriously put together a challenge to reach the knockouts. The top two from each group, along with the four -best third-place finishers move ahead. So the Scots need to get something out of this, before facing Argentina.

The defeat against England snapped a positive run of form from the Scots. They went W2 L1 at this year’s Algarve Cup, beating Iceland and Denmark. Then in their World Cup preparations they went W2 D1 in their three games. They are on a six-match scoring streak of form now, which is a huge positive from them and it could be worth looking at both teams scoring in this one. The more they get out of star players Kim Little and Erin Cuthbert the better they will be. There are positives they can draw from their opening game. Can they translate it into their first ever World Cup match win?

Who will win – Japan Women v Scotland Women Predictions

This is a big game for both of them. Japan are the better of the two teams without question, even with such a big youth movement going for them. But Scotland should be able to battle well and use their physically from set pieces. Japan may grab the win, but it’s worth backing both teams to score.
