England have already made it through to the knockout stages of the World Cup. This will be a battle for top spot though against Japan. The Lionesses just need a point to secure top spot, while the Japanese have to win. This is a rematch of the 2015 semi-final which England lost through a heartbreaking own goal. Japan Women News and Form

The worst-case scenario for Japan is that they lose this game, Argentina beat Scotland and the Japanese end up as one of the best third-ranked teams. They could top the group with a win, or finish second as long as they match whatever Argentina do. Japan opened their account with a 0-0 draw against Argentina, a game which they dominated but never created a great deal in the final third. Their movement was brilliant against Scotland though as they produced a 2-1 success over the Scots for the first win of the campaign.

Japan are a very good technical side and they are always a handful. Because of giving plenty of time to younger players, a lot of their games played this year didn’t see them at full strength. Still, they reached the final of the SheBelievesCup where they lost to England. Their win over Scotland snapped a five-match winless streak of form that they were on though (D3 L2). Japan have won seven of their last nine World Cup matches (D1 L1) so are never going to be a pushover. The one loss in that sequence was their 5-2 reverse against the USA in the 2015 World Cup Final.

England Women News and Form

England may see this game as a bit of redemption against Japan. Back at the 2015 World Cup, England were beaten 2-1 by Japan in the semifinals after Laura Bassett scored an own goal in the 92nd minute of the game. England did beat a young Japanese side 3-0 at the SheBelievesCup in March. England opened their World Cup 2019 account with a 2-1 win over Scotland. They then had to grind out a 1-0 win over Argentina, the South Americans (particularly their keeper) doing a fantastic job of trying to get a point. They just fell short.

That is four wins in their last five games played now (L1) from the Lionesses. They have lacked a bit of creativity and quality in the final third of the pitch, it has to be said. It was Jodi Taylor who came to their rescue against Argentina. Their key striker Nikita Parris, who got their opener against Scotland, missed from the penalty spot against Argentina. The Lionesses are now W7 L1 in their last eight World Cup fixtures. The only loss that one again Japan. Each of England’s last eight Women’s World Cup fixtures have either produced a 2-1 or a 1-0 result.

Who will win – Japan Women v England Women Predictions

Both may just go and settle for a point in this one by making changes to their strongest starting eleven. That is a result that suits them both and it conserves a bit of energy ahead of the knockout stages of the tournament. The draw in the match outright isn’t a bad fit.
