Iceland World Cup 2018 Predictions – Group Stage & Winner Odds25th March 2018 / lee
Iceland were the real heroes of Euro 2016 despite Portugal going on to win the tournament. They raised their game to a whole new level, earned a tremendous amount of respect and got the world on their side as brave underdogs. However, as they head off to their first ever World Cup, no-one is going to be taking them lightly from now on.

FIFA World Ranking: 18
Everyone wondered just what Iceland could do after their success at the 2016 European Championships. Well, they answered questions with great aplomb as they went out on won their World Cup 2018 Qualification group. They took the group win by two points over Croatia, posting a W7 D1 l2 records along the way. They were perfect from their home games and despite a loss in Croatia, they collected good points out in the Ukraine and Turkey. Iceland collected six clean sheet in their ten qualifiers.
The notable, really stand out result came for them in their penultimate qualifier when they went to Turkey. A loss in that one would have thrown the group wide open, putting the Turks back in contention. However, Iceland slammed the door shut firmly with a 3-0 success and with an easy home win over Kosovo to close out their qualification campaign with, they secured top spot. It wasn’t the easiest of groups with Croatia, Turkey and turkey in there, but the Icelanders held themselves together magnificently. They will be making their World Cup debut in Russia 2018.
Stage of Elimination
What will the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup have in store for Iceland? Well, they get a tough opener to start with because they have to take on Lionel Messi and co as they face Argentina on June 16th. That’s a tough opener for the Icelanders as it is likely to put them on the back foot in the group, meaning that they have to catch up.
They go up against Nigeria in their second game, which is likely going to be a crucial one for them because they will have to get three points in the bag no matter what from that one if they have lost against the Albiceleste. That is because they have a tough finish in the group as well as they reunite with Croatia who they duelled with back in qualification. In World Cup 2018 qualification, Iceland and Croatia traded home wins against each other.
Iceland are 2/7 odds-on at bet365* (betting odds taken on March 25th, 2018 at 9:16 p.m.) and are a big 7/2 to go out at the round of sixteen. Realistically this is a really tough group for Iceland who will need all of their battling qualities to pick up points in it.

Past World Cup Performances
Iceland will be making their World Cup debut in the summer.
Heroics, bravery, you will probably see it all from Iceland in the summer at the World Cup. However, it is unlikely going to be enough for them in terms of points on the board. There are two really tough games for them to come and that really limits their chances of getting out of the group. They may find Croatia and Argentina both too much to handle and are likely to go home at the end of the first phase.
