FC Basel v Manchester City UEFA Champions League, 13th February 7.45pm
Basel have done well to get themselves to this stage of the competition but they face a tough draw in the round of sixteen. That having been said, they did beat Manchester United 1-0 on home soil during this season’s group stage campaign. Manchester City are running as one of the outright favourites to go all the way and lift the Champions League trophy this season, they will want to make a confident start to the knockout stages in this opener.
FC Basel v Manchester City Betting Odds*
Man City 4/11, Draw 19/5, Basel 15/2* (Betting Odds taken on February 8th, 2018 at 7:36 p.m.)
FC Basel News and Form
After a 3-0 loss at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the group stage, FC Basel produced 1-0 home win over the Red Devils on match day five. That helped them to record their best ever tally in the group stage of a Champions League campaign (twelve points), but it wasn’t enough to get to the top of the group ahead of the English Premier League side. This is likely going to be a much tougher challenge for them though as they take on City. This is the third time that Basel have been in the round of sixteen, failing to make it past the stage in either of their two previous visits which were against Bayern Munich and then Porto. Basel were on a nine-match European winless streak (D3 L6) before they hammered Benfica 5-0 on match day two this season and at home they posted a W2 L1 record, the defeatt coming against CSKA Moscow. Basel have suffered three defeats in their last five European fixtures at St. Jakob-Park and in their last ten, they have only gone W3 D3 L4 at home in European games. That having been said, the Swiss side have lost only six of their last 25 European home games since the start of 2013/14. Basel’s record in two-legged knockout ties against English clubs is W1 L4 and they were knocked out of Europe last season as Arsenal beat them on match day six in the group stage. Overall their record against English rivals is W7 D8 L13 (W6 D3 L5 at home) and they were on a three-match losing streak at home against English sides before beating Man Utd this term. Both teams to score at William Hill is at 4/5 odds.
Man City News and Form
Manchester City will be hoping for a deep run in the cup this season. They were knocked out at this stage last season in that epic thriller against Monaco, which the French side won on away goals after a crazy 6-6 aggregate. That was their third defeat at the round of sixteen in the Champions League having gone out in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns against Barcelona. The only time that they have managed to get beyond this stage was in the 2015/16 season when they took out Dynamo Kiev. This will be Man City’s first-ever game against Swiss opposition. The Citizens were in impressive form in the group stage, winning their first five group stage games for losing a meaningless affair out at FC Shakhtar Donetsk on matchday six. Their other two away games in the group saw then beat Feyenoord 4-0 and Napoli 4-2. It may well be worth looking over 2.5 goals which is at 8/15 with William Hill. Kevin de Bruyne is available after his one-match ban. Sergio Aguero, who has had a stunning start to 2018 in front of goal is the first goalscorer favourite.
FC Basel v Man City Head to Head
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.
Who will win – FC Basel v Manchester City Predictions
Manchester City should be pretty comfortable in this one even though they are out on the road. FC Basel had a big moment in beating Manchester United in the group stage but they are likely going to find the Citizens a totally different beast to handle. Look for the Citizens to get the away win but it may be worth looking at both teams to score.
