Everton News and Form

Never at any point did Everton look as if they had shaken off the summer rust in their opening game of the new season. They were out on the road against Crystal Palace and played out a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park. The Merseysiders were reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes to play, which didn’t help. There is going to be a lot better to come from the Toffees.

But avoiding defeat away from home on the opening day of the season isn’t a bad way to start. It was how they started last season, with an away draw. The Toffees went undefeated across their opening four games of the previous campaign (W1 D3). Their output, or lack thereof last weekend was disappointing after so much summer hype. Will they deliver better with the home crowd behind them?

Everton did win their opening home game last season, a 2-1 success over Southampton. The Toffees won five of their first six home fixtures in the last campaign. They averaged 1.6 goals per home fixture last season and they ended strongly at Goodison Park too, winning each of their last four on Merseyside, all clean sheet victories as well.

Everton v Watford Head to Head

There was a 2-2 draw at Goodison between them last season
Everton are undefeated in their 13 previous home games against Watford
Both teams have scored in two of the last five meetings
The last two meetings at Goodison have produced at least four goals

Watford News and Form

What happened to the Hornets on the opening weekend? They started at home against Brighton, a team who only just avoided relegation in the previous season. Good things were expected from Watford. They didn’t happen as they suffered a bruising 3-0 defeat. That was a real shocker and now it puts a lot of pressure on them for this, their first away game of the campaign. What response do they have in them? A test of character is coming up.

The Hornets produced a W6 D5 L8 record on their travels last season in the top flight. They did win their opening road fixture last season. That was a 3-1 success at Burnley. Watford produced a four-match winning streak at the start of the last campaign so are already worse off. The bulk of the struggles that the Hornets had on their travels last season were against the stronger clubs. They lost 7 of their away games against teams who finished in the top ten, Watford failing to score in four of those.

There has to be better to come from Everton and being roared on by the home crowd at Goodison Park, they look the value option to go and pick up three points in this fixture. Watford were reeling after that dreadful opening result.
