This is the first time that Eintracht Frankfurt’s first quarterfinal appearance in the Europa League. They have a bit of work to do as well if they want to go further. They trail 4-2 from the first leg against Benfica but have plenty to play form. They were reduced to ten men as early as the 20th minute in that match, but they wouldn’t back down. They were undefeated in his season’s competition until that loss in Lisbon, having topped their group which included Lazio and Marseille. They then took out Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter Milan in the knockout stages.

Eintracht Frankfurt have a W15 D4 L2 record in the Europa League if you count their qualification matches as well. They do remain undefeated on home soil in the competition with a W8 D2 record. Frankfurt’s have won seven of their previous two-legged ties in UEFA competition after having lost the first leg away from home. This is just their second meeting with Portuguese opposition, the previous one was against Porto in the 2013/14 round of 32. Frankfurt were eliminated on away goals after a 5-5 aggregate tie. 19-year-old Joao Felix netted a hattrick in the first leg to give Benfica a great boost ahead of their trip to Germany. They had finished third in their Champions League group this season behind Bayern Munich and Ajax, to end up here. They moved past Galatasaray and Dinamo Zagreb to reach the quarterfinals. This is their fifth time at this stage of the season, winning each of the last three after having lost the first against Liverpool. Benfica have lost 11 of their last 22 matches in UEFA Competition.

However, looking at their form from this season in Europe it is an impressive W7 D4 L3. Each of those three defeats have come away from home. OUt on the road in the Europa League in their history, they have produced a W10 D5 L5 record which isn’t bad. A defeat in the first leg of this season’s round of 16 tie at Dinamo Zagreb snapped a five-match undefeated streak of away from that they were on in the competition (W4 D1). Benfica have won 48 of 57 occasions of having won the first leg of a UEFA tie on home soil. They have lost just one of fourteen previous tie after having won the first leg by a two-goal margin in Lisbon.
