Crystal Palace News and Form
The Eagles pulled off a stunning upset last weekend. They paid a visit to Old Trafford and delivered a 2-1 win over Manchester United. That was an odds-defying result as the Eagles had failed to score in their opening two games of the season. They had played out a 0-0 draw with Everton before having lost 1-0 at Sheffield United.
So to go to United and claim a win was massive. Jordan Ayew and Patrick van Aanholt got their goals. Can they make it back to back wins this weekend? It would certainly settle some nerves that the Old Trafford result wasn’t just a one-off. The Eagles did lose against Colchester in the EFL Cup in midweek. Joel Ward, Jeffrey Schlupp and Van Aarnholt were all ruled out of action in midweek because of injury.
Palace have seen under 2.5 goals crop up in 5 of their last 6 games against Villa in all competitions, so this may be tight. Last season the Eagles only posted a W5 D5 L9 record at Slerurt Park in the Premier League. They only averaged exactly a goal per game on home soil last season, but to their credit, were defensively sound. Just 32% of Premier League games at Selhurst Park went over 2.5 goals last season.
Crystal Palace v Aston Villa Head to Head
Palace and Villa will be meeting for the first time since the 2015/16 season
Crystal Palace are W3 D1 L2 in their last six EPL matches against Villa
Villa have lost two of their last three league trips to Selhurst Park (W1)
Just one of the last six meetings have gone above 1.5 goals
Aston Villa News and Form
The early signs from Aston Villa is that they have enough about them to survive this season. They have just three points from the three games so far, but those were three very convincing points in a 2-0 win over Everton last weekend. We have also seen them be competitive against Spurs and Bournemouth despite the Villains losing them. Once the defensive mistakes stay off their radar, they are going to be fine most likely.
Their win over Everton last weekend was excellent, with Wesley opening the scoring in the first half before Anwar El Ghazi sealed the game in the final minute. All four of Villa’s goals this season have come from different players. Villa have a good run of games coming up, Arsenal being the only top six team they will face in their next five fixtures, so they will want to fill their boots.
In their one away game this season, Villa opened the scoring at Spurs, before going on to concede two late goals to suffer a 3-1 defeat. Aston Villa hammered Crewe 6-1 in midweek in the EFL Cup but made ten changes to the starting eleven against Everton. They look as if they have more than enough to be competitive in this game. With Wesley, Jota and Trezeguet, they have a very exciting attack which is likely to bring them goals.
