The Copa America is a fantastic tournament. It delivers a bit of grit, feisty rivalries, outrageous talent and upsets. This year’s edition kicks off on June 14th in Sao Paulo with host nation Brazil lining up against Bolivia. That should be a manageable game for the hosts to get themselves up and running with.

But the question is, can they win the tournament for the first time in fourteen years? They have continued to collapse and fall apart in recent editions and so with home advantage, there is going to be more pressure than ever on them to deliver. Will they go all the way without the injured Neymar? Will Lionel Messi guide Argentina to success are repeated failures in the final?

Here we take a look at the key contenders in this summer’s Copa America 2019.

Copa America 2019 Winner Odds*

Brazil 11/10
Argentina 7/2
Uruguay 7/1
Colombia 9/1
Chile 12/1
Peru 25/1
Venezuela 40/1

Brazil 11/10

Home advantage can give teams that extra edge. With Brazil having been starved of their top talent that is Neymar, they may need it. The loss of Neymar, which happened through an injury in a warm-up match against Qatar, is a big blow for them. A disruptive blow because their attacking plans for the tournament will no doubt have been surrounding him.

So that will ramp up the pressure on Man City forward Gabriel Jesus to step up and get the goals for the Samba Boys. Neymar has 60 goals in 97 appearances for Brazil. Now they will be relying on Jesus who has 16 in 29 and Roberto Firmio who has just 10 in 32. Will the Selecao be able to overcome the adversity of losing Neymar to produce a tournament win. Being lumped in the easiest of the three groups in the pool stage of the competition is going to help their cause.

Argentina 7/2

Brazil have no Neymar, but Argentina have Lionel Messi. And Sergio Aguero. And Paulo Dybala. It is, once again an enviable amount of forward talent that Argentina have at their disposal. They have had a necessary shake-up after the World Cup with head coach Lionel Scaolini injecting so much needed new blood like Tottenham’s Juan Foyth, PSG’s Leandro Pardes and Watford’s Roberto Pereyra. Their midfield is looking much more youthful and energetic.

In terms of quality, they probably aren’t quite as s strong as they were, but this is a step in the right direction for their youth. They do still boast so many match-winners in their squad that can turn games. That’s a wonderful position to be in. They will get a big challenge in their opener against Colombia, which they are only 6/5 odds-against to win, representing the difficulty of the game for them* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on June 12th, 2019 at 5:26 pm).

Uruguay 7/1

* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on June 12th, 2019 at 5:26 pm)

Uruguay are the favourites to win Group C at the Copa America and could be a threat in the tournament outright. They are strong in the defence and midfield area of the game, with captain Diego Godin pulling all of the strings in organising the back line. They do have experience and quality at the top of the pitch as well with Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez there.

If those two are able to stay fit and on point, then they could really propel Uruguay far. They are a tough, physical side and they are not going to give anything away cheaply. They have had a really good warm-up ahead of the tournament as well with all sorts of goals flying around. If they bank a solid win over a tricky challenger in Ecuador in their opening game then that should set them for a comfortable ride.

Colombia 9/1

* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on June 12th, 2019 at 5:26 pm)

Colombia have a heavyweight showdown against Argentina in their opening game of the tournament. Regardless of the outcome in that, there should be enough for Colombia to get through to the quarter finals. But actually, they look as if they can more than handle themselves against the Albiceleste. Colombia are in some fine form at the moment and they aren’t going to be afraid of what is going to be in front of them in the group.

They have been scoring well recently and will head into competition with a W5 D1 L1 record in their last seven games, all international friendlies. There was a 0-0 draw in all of that last September against Argentina incidentally. Los Cafeteros have a very good young squad and Radamel Falco may be pushed for a role up from with Duvan Zapata coming into the picture after a good season with Atalanta in Serie A.

Top Goalscorer Odds*

Lionel Messi 3/1
Gabriel Jesus 13/2
Luis Suarez 8/1
Edinson Cavani 8/1
Sergio Aguero 9/1
Roberto Firmino 9/1
Richarlison 11/1
Radamel Falcao 16/1
Coutinho 16/1
Jose Paolo Guerrero 20/1
Alexis Sanchez 20/1
25/1 bar

Outside Chances

Who could potentially upset the apple-cart? Chile have done it in the last two editions, having beaten Argentina in back to back finals on penalties. But they look to be out of sorts at the moment and could struggle in this particular title defence. Qatar, who are the AFC Asian Champions could make a splash. They are really on the up at the moment and it would be something if they get past the group stage.

Peru has been struggling a bit with their form recently and they open with a big game against Venezuela which could well decide who joins Brazil in the top two from Group A. Venezuela has beaten the USA and Argentina in friendly matches this year. They are unpredictable but have the capability of pulling out something special and are probably the best each-way dark horse of the tournament at 40/1 odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on June 12th, 2019 at 5:26 pm).

So who will win the 2019 Copa America? Brazil and Argentina are the obvious front runners of course. Argentina have lost four of the last five Copa America finals and they do tend to grind a bit when it comes to the big stage. They were scoring for fun at the last Copa America before they choked in the Final.

Brazil are lacking Neymar and on top of that, they don’t look to be a totally explosive, cohesive unit. They could even be stronger in defence than attack. Brazil have been keeping a lot of clean sheets and probably edge things in terms of favouritism.

But the wildcard is Colombia who are an exciting side to watch and they have been scoring plenty of goals in their warm-ups. They can make a decent option in the outright market at 7/1 odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on June 12th, 2019 at 5:26 pm)
