Champions League Semi Finals Betting 2018 Odds & Preview13th April 2018 / lee
The final four teams left standing in the Champions League this season all know what will be waiting for them in the semi finals. After their heroics against Manchester City in their quarter-final duel, Liverpool who are the only English side remaining in the competition avoided both of the big guns left in the draw to pull out Roma. It leaves a heavyweight clash between giants Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the other semi final.
Champions League Winner Odds*
Real Madrid 15/8, Bayern Munich 9/4, Liverpool 9/4, Roma 9/1* (betting odds taken at 3: 27 p.m. on April 13th, 2018).
Bayern Munich v Real Madrid
To Qualify: Real Madrid 8/11, Bayern Munich 11/10 at bet365* (betting odds taken at 3: 27 p.m. on April 13th, 2018)
First leg, Munich: Wednesday 25 April
Second leg, Madrid: Tuesday 1 May
When the two square up for the first leg at the Allianz, it will make Bayern v Real Madrid the most played UEFA club competition fixture (the 25th between them) ever. This will be the seventh semi-final between them with Bayern 4-2 up from the previous meetings. Once again Bayern have been such a powerful, dominant force in the Champions League. After beating Copenhagen in their group stage opener, they had a setback in a heavy loss in Paris against PSG, but quickly made a change of manager and haven’t looked back. They have produced a W8 D1 L1 record in the Champions League this term, W4 D1 at home. They eased past Sevilla in the quarter finals and maybe sacking Carlo Ancelotti was a good omen for them as the last time Heynckes was in charge at the Bundesliga giants, he won the 2013 Champions League final with them.
Real Madrid somehow survived an epic Juventus comeback against them in their quarter-final tie. After winning in Italy 3-0 in the first leg, it was expected to be easy for Real Madrid back at home. But Juventus meant business and managed to pull back the tie level with a 3-0 lead and the game heading into extra time. But then Juve were judged to have given away a penalty, up stepped Cristiano Ronaldo and spared Real Madrid from any heartache.
Real Madrid, who have won the tournament in the last two seasons, are currently on a five-match winning streak against the Germans, scoring 13 goals and conceding four. Cristiano Ronaldo, who has achieved the feat of scoring in each and every Champions League game this season, has seven goals in his last three games against Bayern (nine in six overall). Overall in the head to head, things are even at eleven wins each and two draws.
There was a controversial quarter-final meeting between Real and Bayern last season. After losing 2-1 at home in the first leg, Bayern took a 2-1 win back at the Bernabeu in the second leg to take the game to extra time. But seven minutes before the 90 minutes were up, Arturo Vidal controversially saw red, despite a clean tackle on Asensio. That put Bayern on the back foot and it got worse as the game breaker by Cristiano Ronaldo to make it 4-3 in extra time, was converted with the Real Madrid forward at least a yard offside. Bayern crumbled after that and lost 6-3 on the night.
Liverpool v Roma
To Qualify: Liverpool 2/5, Roma 15/8 at bet365* (betting odds taken at 3: 27 p.m. on April 13th, 2018)
First leg, Liverpool: Tuesday 24 April
Second leg, Rome: Wednesday 2 May
Liverpool will be pretty pleased with their draw as they managed to avoid getting Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. So now they have a really good chance to progress. Liverpool and Roma have met before, five times in fact, the first of them being in the 1983/84 European Cup Final, with the Reds winning 4-2 on penalties. They were next paired up in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup fourth round with Liverpool winning 2-1 on aggregate and then the following season they were in the Champions League second group stage together with Liverpool taking a win and draw.
This will be a reunion for Liverpool’s prolific goalscorer Mo Salah who joined the Anfield club from Roma in the summer. In the last round, he had a big impact as the Reds saw off English Premier League challengers Manchester City, producing two fantastic legs of high-pressure, high tempo action to prevail 6-1 on aggregate. Liverpool holds a W9 D5 L11 record against Italian clubs and from six previous two-legged knockout ties against Italian opposition, Liverpool have won four and lost two.
Roma though pulled off the biggest comeback shock of this year’s tournament. The Italians looked down and out after a 4-1 loss at the Nou Camp, but Edin Dzeko’s late consolation (or so it seemed) in that game was pivotal. Back at the Stadio Olimpico, Roma threw everything that they could at Barcelona and they got their just rewards as well. Edin Dzeko opened the scoring for them and they went on to complete a 3-0 second leg win to move through on away goals. During his spell with Man City Edin Džeko scored three goals in 11 games against Liverpool with a W3 D4 L4 record against them. After winning their first three two-legged knockout ties against English sides, Roma have lost the last six in a row.
Roma probably have had their moment in the sun and aren’t likely to get at the Reds too much. While The Italians are strong at the back, Liverpool have proven that they can destroy defences and the Reds can take the tie. The Real Madrid v Bayern Munich clash is a tough one to read. There really should not be much between them over the two legs. It’s fine margins, but Bayern are better at the back and have more of a team effort about them whereas Madrid relies so heavily on Ronaldo. Bayern to win.
