Argentina World Cup 2018 Predictions – Group Stage & Winner Odds24th May 2018 / lee
Argentina at the World Cup 2018
Argentina are a little bit of an enigma. You look at their squad and you can see it bursting with world-class talent, and they can of course boast the best player on the planet in Lionel Messi. However, when it comes to performances, Argentina generally take a conservative approach to matches instead of just unleashing all of the attacking force that they have at their disposal. It will be interesting to see how coach Jorge Sampaoli handles the World Cup 2018 challenge of getting the Albiceleste together as a cohesive unit.
They have some major struggles through World Cup 2018 qualification and only sealed their place at the tournament in the final round of qualification matches. They have all the individual talent at their disposal, but the big question about Argentina is whether or not they can actually play as a team. We shall find out over the summer and Argentina are actually very short 4/1 odds price with bet365* (betting odds taken on May 24th, 2018 at 5:24 p.m.) to win the tournament outright.
Argentina World Cup 2018 Fixtures – Group Stage
It’s hard to imagine that Argentina were overly delighted with the draw that they have received for the 2018 World Cup group stage. The Albiceleste play in Group D where they will be facing Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria. Immediately on paper that doesn’t look to be the most difficult of opposition that they would have to deal with, however, each of those will bring a unique challenge which could get under the skin of the South Americans. Argentina open their campaign against Iceland on June 16, and while Argentina are odds-on favourites to win that, you can still kind of picture it being a difficult game for them.
Iceland produced that fantastic Euro 2016 campaign, and they followed it up competently by topping a qualification group for the World Cup ahead of Croatia. Iceland have that tremendous team unity, that amazing fighting spirit as well as good resilience and you can’t say those kinds of things about Argentina. Would it be that big of a shock if Iceland frustrated point out of the Albiceleste? The fixtures for Argentina won’t get any easier either as they have to go up against Croatia on June 21 in their second group stage fixture.
That really is the one that could make or break their shot at landing top spot. Argentina are 19/20 odds favourites at bet365* (betting odds taken on May 24th, 2018 at 5:24 p.m.) to win an encounter with Croatia. But Croatia are such a strong dark horse, they are supremely talented and aren’t shy of scoring goals, that they could heap some tremendous pressure on the Albiceleste. That should be really fascinating tight contest between the two nations and it makes up part of a very competitive and wide open group.
Another tricky challenge will follow for Argentina is the go into their final group stage match against Nigeria on June 26. Nigeria had a strong campaign in qualifying for the World Cup, and they look full of pace and energy and they have every chance of being in the qualification picture heading into the final round of matches in Group D at the World Cup 2018. The Super Eagles should put up pretty spirited fight and it’s just where Argentina can look a bit slow and methodical, when they have to take on teams who play and run them with pace, the South Americans can look a little bit vulnerable.
There doesn’t appear to be any easy points up for grabs for Argentina in World Cup Group D, but still, the Albiceleste are 8/11 odds-on favourites* (betting odds taken on May 24th, 2018 at 5:24 p.m.) to win the group.
In getting through to the round of 16 at the World Cup, Argentina will face a side from Group C which contains France, Australia, Peru and Denmark. The most likely qualifiers from that group will be France and Denmark and therefore the things to consider here is that Argentina are going to need to win their group to avoid taking on France in the round of 16. If the Albiceleste they top out the group it would most likely mean an easier round of 16 tie against Denmark, but even with that said Denmark are looking pretty sharp at the moment and better than they have been in decades.
But you know Argentina do have their strengths and qualities, they don’t give up a lot of goals and can call on those individuals like Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero for moments of magic. If Argentina were to get through to the quarter-finals having won the group stage, then most likely opponent there would be Spain and that would be such a tough game for Argentina because they wouldn’t likely see enough of the ball to actually do any damage to the Europeans. The thing is if Argentina don’t win their group they would likely meet France in the round of 16, so they have a tough route through the knockout stages ahead of them.
Argentina Stage of Elimination
So whatever happens to Argentina in the group stage there is not going be an easy route for them to get through to the final, or even the final four that. You have to ask yourself are Argentina good enough to handle what is likely to be a tough campaign? There just doesn’t look to be any certainties about the last World Cup’s losing finalists four years on. Argentina are at 5/2 to go home in the last 16, while they are at 10/3 odds* (betting odds taken on May 24th, 2018 at 5:24 p.m.) to make a quarter-final exit. Right from the get-go at the World Cup in the summer their resolve is going to be seriously tested.
Argentina Top Goalscorer
Argentina are blessed with talent up front, they should have stacks of goals and them. However, as we saw in World Cup qualification Argentina really struggled in front of goal. Lionel Messi is the obvious 4/6 odds-on favourite to finish as Argentina’s top goalscorer competition. Once again there will be tremendous pressure on his shoulders to lead Argentina to a successful campaign.they have good backup scoring power with Sergio Aguero at 7/1 odds* (betting odds taken on May 24th, 2018 at 5:24 p.m.), and then the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria trailing behind in the odds. It is a little bit strange that they decided not to take the goalscoring threat of Mauro Icardi with them.
Outright Odds* for the World Cup 2018
Germany 9/4, Brazil 9/4, France 11/4, Spain 10/3, Argentina 4/1, Belgium 5/1, England 7/1, Portugal 12/1, Uruguay 12/1, Colombia 12/1, Croatia 14/1, Poland 16/1, bar 25/1* (betting odds taken on May 22, 2018 at 11:24 p.m.)
Think back to just four years ago at Brazil 2014. Argentina had a much easier group stage campaign in front of them but still only manage to win each of their matches by a one-goal margin including when Lionel Messi popping up with the 91st-minute winner against Iran in their second group stage match. Back-to-back 1-0 wins over Switzerland and Belgium saw them through the first two knockout rounds, before needing a penalty shootout against the Netherlands in the semi finals.
In their four knockout stage matches Argentina produced just two goals and unfortunately they don’t look were pushed on much from there in terms of becoming is an attacking force.
Even with their current boss Jorge Sampaoli, who does like to play an aggressive high pressing game they still look fully locked into their own shell. They are not going to concede many goals in the tournament, but they aren’t likely to score many goals themselves and win the title. We can actually see them struggling to get past the quarter-finals, and actually, there is an appeal on an Argentina round of 16 exit at 5/2 odds* (betting odds taken on May 24th, 2018 at 5:24 p.m.).
