Ajax News and Form
Ajax are in pole position. Donny van der Beek’s first-half goal gave them the win in the first leg of this semi-final tie. So that is a fantastic advantage to be taking back to home soil with them, having already earned a clean sheet and picked up an away goal. This is just the second ever tie between Ajax and Spurs, the first one happening in the 1981/82 European cup winners cup first round. Spurs won that one 6-1 on aggregate.
Ajax do have a good record in the semi-final stage of the European Cup, having won six of their previous eight such ties. They have however lost their last two home games at this stage of the competition. From their previous home games against English opposition from London specifically, Ajax have won just one of four (D1 L2). Their overall record in two-legged ties against English opposition is W3 L4. They have lost each of their last four.
So far Ajax have won all three of their away games in this season’s knockout phase of the competition, but they are D1 L1 at home. Those home results have not hindered their progress well as they have moved past Real Madrid and Juventus in the previous two rounds. Going back to their home form in the knockout stage of the Champions League, Ajax have actually not won any of their last seven D4 L3. Ajax have won 25 of the 27 UEFA competition ties in which they won the away first leg.
Tottenham News and Form
The end of the season has been pretty tough on Spurs. They have lost three of their last four Premier League games and now face a deficit in this European Cup semi-final. The positive for Spurs, of course, is that it is only the one goal that they need pull themselves back level in this tie, but to win this tie outright in 90 min they now have to go and score at least two goals. Spurs have scored one goal in their last five games in all competitions. Back in the group stage they faced PSV Eindhoven and Spurs played out a 2-2 away draw, with a 2-1 home victory over the Dutch club.
Spurs were on a six-match undefeated streak of form against Dutch opposition (winning four) before their loss against Ajax in the first leg of this tie. They are currently undefeated in their last four trips to the Netherlands, winning two of those. Spurs have drawn their last two fixtures over there. Spurs’ record away to Dutch clubs is W5 D2 L2 and the record that they have produced in away matches in the knockout rounds of the Champions League is W2 D1 L2.
Spurs have won only one of their five away games in this season’s Champions League. In fact, the Lilywhites have only claimed just five wins in their last 20 European away games (D7 L8) so by no stretch of the imagination is it a good record that they have. Tottenham have lost all three UEFA competition ties in which they were beaten in the home first leg, most recently against Benfica in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League round of 16 (1-3 home, 2-2 away). They have some work to do and they are now fighting pressure and a slump in form.
Ajax v Tottenham Tips & Odds
Who will win – Ajax v Tottenham Predictions
Spurs look to have lost their way at the end of the season especially with their performances on the domestic front in the Premier League. However they have all but secured a top-four finish for the season, so they may be able to relax ahead of this tie. But still, Ajax look very comfortable side and a team full of running and energy as well. The more Spurs press the pace of the home side could come into play. Home win.
